SONG TEACHING STEPS

“This Is My Father’s World”

1. Introduce the song by listening.• Tell children that the author of “This Is My Father’s World” is Maltbie

Babcock, who, when he would take early morning walks, would tell his family that he was going out to see “my Father’s world.”

• Play Demo 2. Ask children to listen and count the number of times they hear the word world. (nine) Have them tap a steady half-note beat as they listen.

2. Teach Section A (meas. 5-20) by matching words to melody.• Display “This Is My Father’s World” Melody Strips 1-4 in order.

• Mix the first four Word Strips, and place them on the wall near the melodies.

• Play Demo 2 through measure 12 then pause the recording.

• Ask four volunteers to place the correct words under the matching melodies.

• Echo sing each phrase.

• Repeat with Melody Strips 5-8 and the last four strips from the Word Strips.

• Have the pianist play one of the melodies at random, and ask a child to come point to that phrase. Lead children to sing the phrase together.

• Ask children if they can find two melodies that are identical. (Melodies 3 and 7) Have them sing those two melodies with text.

• Play Demo 2, and have children sing during each Section A (“This Is My Father’s World”) and pat a half-note beat during Section B (“He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”).

3. Review the melody and words of Section A (meas. 5-20).• Play “Stop on a Note” Game.

° Display Melody Strips with Word Strips in place.

° Ask the pianist to play each melody as you point to one note at a time.

° Have the pianist stop at random places. Let children identify on what word the pianist stopped.

° Repeat several times, each time starting at the beginning of Section A. After one or two times of play, stop pointing to the notes, and challenge children to track for themselves.

° Continue playing until you have worked your way to the end of Section A.

• Sing Section A together once more as you refer to the strips. Have the pianist play the melody as you sing.

4. Check the meaning and sing.• Point to the picture of spheres on the Word Strips (end of Line 4).

• Ask what the word sphere means. (a round object; a globe; a heavenly body, such as a planet or star)

• Talk about the meaning of the phrase His hands the wonders wrought. Explain that wrought means “carefully formed or worked into shape—worked into shape with artistry and skill.” God made all of creation with great thought and skill.

• Refer to the Melody and Word Strips, and lead children to sing Section A without accompaniment.

5. Teach Section B (“He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”—meas. 22-37).• Write whole world on the board.

• Play Demo 2, beginning at measure 21. Pause the recording in measure 29.

• Have children count how many times they heard the words whole world. (four times)

• Write the wind and the rain on the board. Continue the recording through measure 37.

• Ask how many times they heard this phrase. (three times)

• Lead children to understand that following “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” the second half of “This Is My Father’s World” (the same as meas. 13-20 in Section A is sung.)

• Sing Section B without accompaniment, pointing to cue words on the board and moving your hand in the direction of the melody.

Teaching TipMany versions of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” exist, and children may know a slightly different melody. Move your hand up and down as you sing, and encourage children to move their hands with you to feel the direction of the melody. Or point to scale pitches on the Scale Street Visual to help them sing confidently.

6. Teach the Ending (meas. 47-50).• Have the pianist play the melody as you show the direction of the melody

with your hands without singing.

• Repeat, this time singing the words for the children.

• Ask children to listen once more as you sing. Have them move their hands up and down with you in the direction of the melody.

• Lead them to sing and show the direction of the melody with their hands.

Teaching TipTeach the optional harmony in measures 48-50 to a few strong singers.

• Echo sing the melody on solfège syllables, pointing to pitches on Scale Street Visual or showing Body Scale positions as you sing. Have them notice that the harmony part simply steps up the scale.

7. Start memorizing and polishing the song.• Guide children to discover r words that should be sung without an excessive

r sound.

• Sing phrase 1 (Melody 1) for the children, making sure to minimize the r sounds at the ends of words.

• Toss a beanbag, Frisbee, or ball to a child, and have that child sing or say the next phrase.

• Have the child toss the object back to you. You sing Melody 3, and toss the object to another child to sing phrase 4.

• Continue tossing and singing phrases back and forth throughout the song.

8. Do some color-coded singing.• Display Melody Strips 1-8 with Word Strips in place.

• Place a different colored sticky note at the beginning of each of Melody Strips 1-4 and four more of the same colored sticky notes at the beginning of Melodies 5-8. Mix the colors so that there is a different color from phrase to phrase.

• Have children locate the sticky notes under their chairs.

• Explain that when they see their color next to the visual, they should stand and sing their phrase then sit back down.

• Lead children to sing the color-coded Section A.

• Place a fifth color of sticky notes over some of the words on the visuals and repeat. (Cover at least one word from every color-coded melody.)

• Have the children swap their sticky note with a person who has a different colored sticky note.

• Repeat the activity, covering more words with a fifth color of sticky notes.

• Remove the colored sticky notes, and have the entire group stand and sing all of Section A from memory.

Teaching TipInstead of covering one word on each phrase, remove one whole Word Strip at a time.

Seven Days of Awesome(Genesis 1—2:3, paraphrased)

Here is the awesome story of creation from the first two chapters of Genesis:

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

At first, the earth was empty and dark, without form or shape. Water covered the entire world.

Then God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light. God separated the light from the dark, and called the light day and darkness night, and God saw that it was good. So, at the end of Day One, there was light.

The next day, God said, “Let there be a huge space above the water.” And that’s exactly what happened! God called the space above the water sky, and God saw that it was good. At the end of Day Two, there was light and there was sky.

The following day God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered in its own place. Let dry ground appear, and let it produce fruitful plants. Let every kind of tree and plant have its own kind of seed.” And it was so. God called the dry ground land and the water He called ocean, and God saw that it was good. By the end of Day Three, there was light, sky, land, and ocean.

The day after that, God said, “Let there be great lights in the sky to mark daytime and nighttime. And that’s exactly what happened! God made a huge light to shine in the daytime, called the sun, and a smaller light to shine at nighttime called the moon. And God saw that it was good.

By the end of Day Four, there was light, sky, land, ocean, sun and moon.

The next day God said, “Let the water and air be filled with living creatures large and small, and let them have young that overflow the oceans and sky.” And it happened just as God said. The oceans were filled with fish and swimming creatures, and the sky was alive with all kinds of flying birds, and God saw that it was good.

By the end of Day Five, there was light, sky, land, ocean, sun, moon, fish, and birds.

The following day God said, “Let the land spring forth with animals of every kind. Then let us make humans, and let them rule over all creation.” And it was so, just as God said. Humans ruled over a glorious world brimming with countless forms of animals and other forms of life, and God saw that it was very good.

By the end of Day Six there was light, sky, land, ocean, sun, moon, fish, birds, animals, and humans.

After six busy days, God rested from His creative work. In fact, God set aside a whole day just for rest. God blessed that resting day, and made it holy.

Animal Groovin’ & Movin’1. Demonstrate the movements.

• Display the Animal Groovin’ & Movin’ Visual.

• Demonstrate and practice the motions with the children. (Go to www.celebrating-grace.com/AnimalGroovinMovinMovementVideo to view a demonstration.) Each motion takes place over two measures (eight beats).

° Cheetah run—Move arms and legs forward, imitating a running cheetah.

° Goose flap—Place hands next to body, and move elbows up and down, imitating a goose flapping wings.

° Horse gallop—Bring hands together in front, bend knees slightly, and bounce up and down as if riding a horse.

° Gator chomp—Extend arms forward, and clap hands while keeping arms straight, imitating an alligator opening and closing its mouth.

° Giraffe strut—Place palms of hands together, and extend arms over head, imitating a giraffe’s head and neck. Sway arms slightly, and step in place.

° Elephant stomp—Clasp hands, and extend arms downward, imitating an elephant’s trunk. Sway arms slightly, and march in place.

° Snake slither—Place open palms together, and move them forward in a zigzag fashion, imitating a slithering snake.

° Penguin waddle—Place arms down by sides with hands extending outward, palms to floor. Walk in place with small steps, imitating a penguin walking.

° FREEZE—Hold body completely still.

° Kangaroo hop—Bring hands together in front, and hop as a kangaroo.

° Bear climb—Move arms and legs up and down, imitating a bear climbing a tree.

° Turtle swim—Flap arms in front of body, imitating a swimming turtle.

° Eagle soar—Extend arms to side, and sway them up and down slightly, imitating a soaring eagle.

° Baby bird flap—Place palms outward at sides at shoulder level, and flap them up and down.

° Mole dig—Place fingers in front of face, squint eyes, and imitate a mole digging.

° Monkey swing—Extend hands overhead as if holding a vine, and sway hips left and right.

° Repeat the whole sequence.

LARGE GROUPPlay a Name Rhythms Game.

• Display all Name Cards in a pocket chart or on the wall in rows of four.

• Decide how to speak each child’s name in a one- or two-beat rhythm, such as the following:

• Play a steady beat on a drum, and speak one line of names in rhythm, having children stand up when they hear their names.

• Repeat with each line of names.

• Ask a few volunteers to keep a steady beat on the drum, and repeat several times.

Energizer—“Sasha”1. Teach the dance.

• Explain that “Sasha” is a traditional Russian folk dance. Tell them that Sasha is a nickname in Russian for Alexander or Alexandria, and Ras, Dva, Tri is Russian for one, two, three.

• Teach the following movements for Section A:

° Sasha! (meas. 1-2)—Point emphatically to your partner on the downbeat as you speak the word Sasha!

° Ras, Dva, Tri (meas. 3-4)—Point emphatically to your partner on each word.

° Measure 5—On beats 1, 2, and 3, high five your partner right.

° Measure 6—On beats 1, 2, and 3, high five your partner left.

° Measure 7—On beats 1, 2, and 3, high ten your partner.

° Measure 8—On beats 1, 2, and 3, pat your knees.

° Repeat movements for measures 5-8.

° Tell children that they should bow to their partner, say good-bye (do svidaniya [duh svee-dah-nee-yeh] in Russian), then move freely around the room searching for another partner.

° Explain that they should have found a new partner by the end of Section B, so they will be ready to begin the dance again.

• Play Demo 1, and lead children to move to the steady beat in the following manner or let them choose four movements from Animal Groovin’ & Movin’ Visual. Begin at measure 5, and perform each movement for 16 beats. (For extra fun, turn a quarter turn clockwise with each movement change.)

• Repeat the first four sets of movements, continuing to step in place through the end of the song.

Introduce the theme.• Point to the Theme Poster, and explain that the theme in choir this year is All Creation

Sings.

• Ask volunteers to tell what they think the theme will be about.

• Have a volunteer read Psalm 150:6 from the poster or from a Bible.

• Explain that you will be singing songs about God’s creation and how we and all creation can praise God in many ways.

“This Is My Father’s World”1. Introduce the song by listening.

• Tell children that the author of “This Is My Father’s World” is Maltbie Babcock, who, when he would take early morning walks, would tell his family that he was going out to see “my Father’s world.”

• Play Demo 2. Ask children to listen and count the number of times they hear the word world. (nine) Have them tap a steady half-note beat as they listen.

2. Teach Section A (meas. 5-20) by matching words to melody.

• Display “This Is My Father’s World” Melody Strips 1-4 in order.

• Mix the first four Word Strips, and place them on the wall near the melodies.

• Play Demo 2 through measure 12 then pause the recording.

• Ask four volunteers to place the correct words under the matching melodies.

• Echo sing each phrase.

• Repeat with Melody Strips 5-8 and the last four strips from the Word Strips.

• Have the pianist play one of the melodies at random, and ask a child to come point to that phrase. Lead children to sing the phrase together.

• Ask children if they can find two melodies that are identical. (Melodies 3 and 7) Have them sing those two melodies with text.

• Play Demo 2, and have children sing during each Section A (“This Is My Father’s World”) and pat a half-note beat during Section B (“He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”).

“O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing”Talk about the hymn writer.

• Tell children that the words of this hymn were written by Charles Wesley. Share the following information about Mr. Wesley:

° Charles Wesley was born in England in 1707.

° Hymn writing came easily for him. He would write hymns at home, at church, in the fields, while riding a horse, or while walking down the street. He wrote over sixty-five hundred hymns.

° He is known as the father of Methodist congregational singing and the Methodist church.

° He wrote “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” on the anniversary of his conversion to Christ.

° One of his friends, Peter Böhler, inspired Charles to write this hymn when he told Charles that if he had a thousand tongues he would praise God with them all.

• Explain that this hymn reminds us that God deserves our praise and service.

Listen and move to the hymn.

• Play Demo 14, and have children march to the steady quarter-note beat as they listen.

Closing• Pray, thanking God for His blessings and especially for the start of a new choir year.
