Iglesia Pentecostal Poder de Dios

The Rev. Angelo Crespo 224-440-2356

Celebrating Earth Day: On April 22nd, Earth Day, we held our annual Spring Grounds Clean-up. About 22

people participated. Our usual crew of Al Nelson, Quentin Schwarz, Charlie Schaller, Sue Grisham, Mary Neely, John Moore, Mark and Sandy Dalgaard, and Mark and Zachary Andersen were joined by parish member Joel Dahl, who cleaned the teak benches, Michelle Andersen’s dad, Cal, who helped Mark with tree maintenance, and a group of students from Lake Forest Country Day School, which included Grayson and Cole Salata and their mom, Jodi, Aiden and Brendan Murphy and their mom, Susan, Gino Farrell, and Gardner Brown. Not pictured, but making the beautiful day even more rewarding were Sammie McMinn and her friend, Teri Backus, who provided the workers with a delicious lunch. Apologies to anyone I may have missed, and special thanks to Sammie and Mary for the photo documentation. Much was accomplished. Much remains to be done, but that’s the way of yard work, it never ends. I hope you will take a few moments to admire the work done and thank those who spent a beautiful Saturday morning at church.

CHRIST CHURCH VESTRY MINUTES:

04/11/17

Attendees: Eileen Shanley-Roberts, Rector; Al Nelson, Sr. Warden; John Moore, Jr. Warden; Mark Agin, Clerk of the Vestry; Sandy Dalgaard; Bill Dierks; Sue Grisham; Mary Neely; Matt Nordigian; and Reyna Montes de Oca. Eileen+ opened the meeting with prayer after which she introduced, and the Vestry heartily welcomed, our new-est member, Reyna Montes de Oca, a parishioner repre-senting our new Sunday 5 p.m. Missa en Espanol ser-vice. The March Vestry Meeting Minutes were then unani-mously approved. Rector’s Report:

Pastoral Updates: Fran’s recovery is going well and she hopes to be back within the next couple of weeks. Bill Dowden, Ed Huesing, and Jere Lapish are rehab-bing at Manor Care, home, and Rolling Hills respective-ly. And Dorothy and Malcolm Layson hope to join us for the noon Good Friday Stations of the Cross and Lit-urgy service. Eileen+ asked for us to keep all of them in our prayers. As Eileen+ reported last week, Dick Boom-er passed away. His cremains will be interred in the Chapel Altar July 1 next to Lura’s. Holy Week Schedule:

Simple agape meal at 6 p.m. on Maundy Thurs-day followed by a bilingual service with foot washing, stripping of the altar, and the all-night Vigil in the Chapel.

Good Friday services begin with Morning Prayer at 7 a.m. (Chapel), noon Stations of the Cross and Liturgy for Good Friday (Chapel), and a bilingual Liturgy of Good Friday service in the Church at 7:00 p.m.

Easter Vigil on Saturday at 7:30 beginning with the lighting of the new fire.

- Easter Sunday services are at 7:30 and 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The Easter letter is in process. And we have a brand new stove in the kitchen thanks to Community Meal grants and donations! All the Commu-nity Meal teams and everyone else who uses our kitchen are happy campers! Buildings, Grounds, and Property Updates: John Moore reported to us on the status of roofing, elevator, our rental properties, and the upcoming grounds cleanup.

Although we have received bids from contractors for replacing the Parish House roof ($64K, $78K, and $88K), the Vestry in March voted to contract with Eco Shield for both the Parish House and Church roofs pending Matt’s reference check. Matt reported that he did get glowing reviews from the church that contracted with Eco Shield to work with their insurance company and to use their crew to perform the work. Based on his report, and a favorable one from the Davis’ who con-tracted with Eco Shield for work on their home, we will proceed with contracting with the firm per our March vote.

We have received independent contractor bids for installing an elevator, two of which included architectur-al plans, one didn’t, and another bid is pending. Realisti-cally we are looking at somewhere between $600-700K after all is said and done. In the meantime we are still working with Legat to finalize a design that will be pre-sented to the Vestry for review, discussion, and a deci-sion on whether or not to proceed. If we decide to pro-ceed then there will be an all Parish presentation by Legat. A meeting with the Waukegan Historical Preser-vation committee would follow should the parish vote at that time to proceed with the project.

Painting and floor cleaning at 319 West is targeted to be completed this week. It was decided to use ReMax to rent the home for a month’s rent ($1250) that includes screening of renters. Subsequently we’ll assume manage-ment of the property instead of using the services of the firm that handles 323 West rentals. A new water heater was installed in 323 and Robinson Heating is working to schedule the installation of the new A/C units there within the next month. The Winston rental on Hickory had water leakage in their basement as a result of our recent heavy rains. John is going to review the grading on the north size of the lot. He feels it may need to be lowered to prevent any future recurrence. Grounds cleanup, scheduled for Sat, 4/22, was an-nounced at all three services this past Sunday. Eileen+ also plans to share our plans with Waukegan 2 College and our Pentecostal congregation hoping for their par-ticipation again this year. Financials: Eileen+ reported that Debbie is working to-ward finalizing and closing out our 2016 financials with-in the next week or so and shortly thereafter bringing our 2017’s up-to-date. Al announced that he has re-ceived additional pledges bringing our total to ~$175K. Communication: Mary reported that from 3/17-4/7 our Facebook site had 128 visits and 213 engagements. Overall there have been 1967 visits YTD.

101 Reasons to be Episcopalian #55 Another reason to be Episcopalian is that the altar is

not fenced. In my days as a Presbyterian “seeker” I fre-

quently attended both Roman Catholic and Episcopal litur-

gies: at the former I was explicitly refused communion; at

the latter I was welcome to receive. As Woody Allen didn’t

quite say, I wouldn’t want to belong to a club that wouldn’t

take me as a non-member.

Deborah Smith Douglas,, Diocese of The Rio Grande

Welcome New Vestry Member

Welcome to our newest vestry member, Reyna Montes de Oca. Reyna is a native of Mexico who has lived in Waukegan for over 25 years. In Mexico, she was an elementary teacher, but in the US she

works in home health care, mainly at Lake Forest Place. Reyna speaks Spanish and English fluently and worships at our 5:00PM service. She has 2 children, a daughter who is a recent college graduate, and a son in 9th grade who is part of the Schuller Scholars program. Reyna has been involved in Waukegan to College since its beginning. Reyna began worshipping at Nuestra Senora de Guada-lupe when her daughter was preparing for first commun-ion. As a result of that formation, she was received into the Episcopal Church, which she feels is a much better fit for her. She is passionate about formation and helping people gain a deeper understanding of their faith. If you see Reyna around, be sure to say hello.

Various Updates Fran returns to work on May 2. She may have a reduced schedule for a couple of weeks. We will see how it goes. Thanks to Mary Neely for filling in while Fran recovered.

319 West Street has been rented! First, the thank yous—John Moore really embraced this project. Thanks to his project management and team of volunteers (Pam Moore, Don Craig, Abigail Shanley-Roberts, Andrea), we were able to get the house ready for under $5000.00. The new tenants will take occupancy June 1. They are Casey and Sarah Bushman and their daughters Hattie and Grace. Ca-sey is a youth pastor for the Chinese Christian Fellowship in Wilmette. Sarah is a stay at home mom and community volunteer. We are very excited to welcome them to Waukegan. Graduations: Jacob Andersen graduates from Warren H.S. on May 21. Maddy Beach graduates from Tremper H.S. on June 3rd. Abbe Shanley-Roberts graduates from 8th grade June 8th. Athletic Accomplishments: William Grenier competed in the USBC single handed bowling tournament. Reid Pumala and team were NSYHockey League champi-ons. Ben McLaughlin took 7th at the IKWF state wrestling tournament. Jacob Andersen was recognized for his tennis victory over Lake Zurich. Emily Shanley-Roberts has qualified for nationals in Team Racing and Women’s Intercollegiate Sailing.

Building Community: A lot of discussion ensued about what we could do to get our parishioners to attend church on a day other than Sunday. We agreed that while we do a lot to build community from without that we haven’t done much to do so within, spiritually or socially. Suggestions for further consideration included an ice cream social on Father’s Day, June 18, an all parish cookout, dinner cou-pled with Bible study or possibly watching and discussing CNN’s “Finding Jesus: Faith, Fact, and Forgery” which was highly recommended by Bill Dierks. Eileen+ asked that we engage other parishioners for additional sugges-tions of intergenerational spiritual or social activities that would help bring us closer together as a parish family. There being no further business, the meeting was ad-journed. Respectfully submitted, Mark C. Agin

Faith and Film

The Brand New

Testament

God is not happy. His son has left home, his wife bus-ies herself doing embroidery, while his young daughter Ea's only desire is to escape the confines of their small Brussels apartment. Every day, God amuses himself by creating misanthropic rules to plague humanity. Turns out, God is a capricious jerk. Ea finds a way to escape and sets out to find her own apostles and write a new book of the Bible. Ea's gospels are deliciously eccentric, and the varied stories of the new apostles are both charming and amusing, all whilst offering a heavy dose of morality. 2015 Norwegian International Film Festival, winner: Most Enjoyable Film; 2016 Palm Springs Inter-national Film Festival, winner: Best Narrative Feature.
