Letter to the Editor…Dear Editor,Having heard relatively recently of the new political party Rise up Australia Party, my husband and I immediately signed up to do what we could to be pro-active and promote the party which brought us so much hope. We have been wanting to come to Allora for some time and finally made it today, 26th August 2013. After letterbox dropping for a while, we decided to visit businesses in the main street. Imagine our surprise when we came to a door that said, we are open come in. We did this, and to our surprise we were speaking to the upfront person of the Allora Advertiser. Should this letter be accepted, you will be able to read an article (below) in The Advertiser concerning the Rise Up Australia Party (www.riseupaustraliaparty.com), which we hope and pray will have you as excited as my 80 year old husband and myself. Thank you for being a wonderful small town, and a caring part of Queensland's Darling Downs.Ivor & Fay Rosenberg

Heralding an alternate Political PartyThis new Political party encourages the silent majority to rise up and keep Australia Australian. The Party I speak of is "Rise up Australia Party."Rise up Australia party is for people from all ethnic backgrounds who aim to preserve Australian freedoms, culture and way of life. Lets look together at some of the policy principals.Keep Australia Australian! We are MULTI-ETHNIC. One Culture, One Law, AUSTRALIAN LAW.We support Australian farmers and producers, with 51% Australian ownership of infrastructure. We want to restore and invigorate Australian manufacturing industries. We will protect the traditional family unit - Father, Mother and children.Stop declining birth rate. Protect the unborn. Create conditions

that support women. Parents and schools should have the right to discipline children, within sensible, non-abusive guidelines. We will protect religious freedoms, this means that no religion or religious practices are to be forced on another person/ and that faith based schools have a right to employ people with values consistent with their faith basis. We interpret the phrase "separation of church and state" as the originator of that phrase, US President Jefferson, used it - namely that the state shall not favour any particular church; he did not intend that churches and Christian values should not influence the formulation of governmental policies and laws, because these are never conceived in a moral vacuum. We will stop illegal boat arrivals to preserve lives. We will keep Australia debt free.We wilI honour the first people of the land; Advancing Australiatogether. We will ensure that school children are taught a curriculum that includes a balanced view of history of Western civilization (Greek, Roman and European), Aboriginal history, Magna Carta, Westminster democracy and the Judeo-Christian heritage that has come to us through the words of Henry Parkes, founding father, who said, "We are pre-eminently a Christian nation, as our laws, our whole system of jurisprudence, our constitution… are based upon and interwoven with our Christian beliefs. To hear more on Party and policy Email: info@ riseupaustraliaparty.comI invite you to come with me, see Australia thrive in a restoration mode of Government. Let's commit to Rise up Australia, to see again the values we once treasured - and ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!!

Reminder to postal voters – Return your postal vote ASAPPeople casting a postal vote this federal election are being urged to return their completed ballot papers to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) as soon as possible.Electoral Commissioner Ed Killesteyn said postal voters should complete their ballot papers, sign the envelope and have it witnessed, and mail it before election day, Saturday 7 September."Both your House of Representatives and Senate ballot papers must be returned sealed inside the provided blue envelope to the AEC for your vote to count," Mr Killesteyn said."At the end of last week we had processed more than 1.2 million postal vote applications, but so far the AEC has only received 472,000 completed postal votes back from electors. Clearly many postal voters need to act now and not miss out."Mr Killesteyn urged any other people needing to vote before election day to check if they could go to any of the over 500 early voting centres currently operating across Australia, as this was easier than applying and waiting for a postal vote.

Don’t bin it, bring it! Council offers free waste drop-off pointResidents from the Southern Downs Regional Council are now able to recycle unwanted TVs and computers at a number of e-waste Drop Zone collection points located throughout the Council area.SDRC has partnered with Australian logistics and recycling company DHL Supply Chain (Australia) to establish a number of e-waste collection points under the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme.Council Manager Environmental Services Tim O'Brien said householders and small businesses in the SDRC area will now have access to a free recycling service for old or unwanted televisions, computers and computer products, such as printers, keyboards and mice, regardless of their age or brand."The e-waste drop zone collection points are Warwick Central Waste Management Facility (Old Stanthorpe Road, Warwick) and Stanthorpe Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre (Rifle Range Road, Stanthorpe) and residents are able to start using the service from 6 September," he said.Mr O'Brien said that unwanted electrical waste is Australia’s fastest growing type of waste and many items currently end up in landfill.“We are happy to be working with DHL Supply Chain on this exciting project, and we urge residents to recycle their unwanted e-waste by using their closest Drop Zone."DHL Supply Chain will take the e-waste directly to the Endeavour Foundation for dismantling and recycling. This increases Council's involvement with the Endeavour Foundation and supports their workers as well as keeping more items out of the landfill, increases the life expectancy of the landfill and

saves ratepayers' money for many years to come."This program will provide the community with greater choice for recycling and will help to protect and conserve our natural resources and the environment”.The types of products accepted at Drop Zone include:Televisions:• All televisions, such as CRTs, Plasma, LCD and Projection

televisionsComputers and computer products:• Personal computers• Laptops, notebooks, palmtops and tablets• Computer monitors• Parts for personal computers - for example internal hard

drives, motherboards, cards, internal power supplies, CPUs, DVD and CD drives

• Computer peripherals - for example mice, keyboards, joysticks, game pads, scanners & web cameras

• Printers - for example ink-jet, dot matrix, laser printers and multi-functional devices.

Mr O'Brien said the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme involves a combination of government regulation and industry action to reduce the amount of television and computer waste going to landfill and to increase the recovery of resources. The Scheme aims to boost the recycling rate of these products from 17 per cent in 2010 to 80 per cent by 2021-22."The scheme will ensure over 90 per cent of the materials used to make these products are recovered and recycled."The industry funded National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme is regulated by the Australian Government and we have partnered with DHL Supply Chain as they were the first organisation to be approved by the Commonwealth Government to become a Co-Regulatory (Product Stewardship) Arrangement," he said.Anyone wanting to know more about the e-waste drop zones please call phone Council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372) or go to www.sdrc.qld.gov.au

The locations and opening hours of early voting centres are available at www.aec.gov.au/where or by calling 13 23 26.While applications for postal votes may be lodged with the AEC until 6pm TONIGHT, Thursday, 5 September, Mr Killesteyn cautioned that time is running out."If you need a postal vote, don’t leave it to the very last minute and risk missing out. It’s likely that for some locations it could already be too late for the AEC to get ballot papers to you, despite our best efforts, and you may need to consider the option of a pre-poll vote in person rather than postal voting.""If voting by post is your only option, you can complete a postal vote application form online at www.aec.gov.au, pick up a form at any Australia Post outlet or AEC office, or call 13 23 26 to have an application form sent to you," Mr Killesteyn said.Voters are eligible for an early vote if on election day they will be outside their electorate; more than 8km from a polling place; approaching childbirth; seriously ill or caring for someone who is; or unable to attend a polling place due to religious beliefs, fear for personal safety, disability or work commitments.

Queensland Law Society definitive on asylum seeker definitionsQueensland Law Society says that inaccuracies in statements concerning asylum seekers have the potential to fuel misinformation in public debate.President Annette Bradfield said community discussions about asylum seekers would be better informed by accurate statements regarding the content of international law and the Refugee Convention. “As a matter of law, all individuals have the legal right to seek asylum, regardless of the circumstances of entry.“This accords with Australia’s commitment to the United Nations Refugee Convention (1951) under Article 31.“There are no provisions in the Refugee Convention that allow governments to differentiate between asylum seekers based on their method of arrival.“We encourage public debate on these important national issues to be correctly informed by the well-established principles of international law.”

Council approves portfolios for councillorsSouthern Downs Regional Councillors have been allocated portfolios as part of an overall streamlining of business functions at SDRC.Mayor Cr Peter Blundell said as community members had observed Council had taken time to deliberate over the idea of

portfolios and the allocation of specific portfolios to councillors."We wanted to get the best fit and feel we have that now. "As Mayor I will look after Economic Development and Emergency Management. "The Deputy Mayor Cr Ross Bartley will be responsible for Infrastructure. "The portfolios for other councillors are:• Cr Cameron Gow - Agriculture and environmental management• Cr Denise Ingram - Community Services

• Cr Neil Meiklejohn - Planning and Environment

• Cr Glyn Rees - Sports, Parks and Cemeteries

• Cr Vic Pennisi - Commerce and Industry

• Cr Jamie Mackenzie - Area promotion

"All councillors will be across all aspects of council business but the portfolio structure will allow them to specialise in their areas of strength and interest. They will also be able to work closely with council Directors and Managers to gain relevant information, bylaws and planning rules."Council has also reviewed council representation on committees and community organisations. We have a total of 49 committees and community organisations and Councillors bring a great deal of knowledge to council general meetings through these committees."I'm pleased the new structure is now implemented and look forward to seeing great results from the various portfolios," he said.

Looking Back…Allora’s Past 25 years ago September 1988End of an Era

An era came to a close on the 16th September 1988, with the sale of one of Allora’s longest established firms, Deacon & Co. The auctioneering and commission agency business was founded by Hubert and Charles Deacon in 1904. Deacon & Co. was carried on by Hubert’s son Bob after his return from overseas service in the Second World War. Bob Deacon’s widow, Mrs. W. P. Deacon announced the sale of the firm to Allan and Heather Green who said that they would carry on the business in traditional way with the addition of new services. Long standing employee of more than 40 years, Mr. Keith Masters, will stay on until the new owners settle in.

Butter v MargarineThe dairy industry is preparing itself to fight off the threat to its market share by the new product, margarine. At Saturday’s meeting of the Warwick Butter and Dairying Company an excellent sample of margarine was exhibited. Mr. Andrew Rickert secured a portion of the sample and left it with this office for evaluation. In both appearance and taste there seems to be little difference, and if it was placed on the breakfast table, any family would be unaware that it was anything other than good quality butter. The answer for the dairy industry is to use nothing but first grade, clean, cream and produce the choicest quality butter.

Keep hot ashes out of wheelie binsSouthern Downs Regional Council is reminding residents that hot ash from fire places should not be placed in domestic wheelie bins.“We’ve had several instances of late where residents have placed hot ash from their heating fires in their wheelie bin,” said Manager of Environmental Services, Tim O’Brien.“However, this can have dire consequences – it can result in fires starting throughout the waste collection process, including in the collection vehicles and at the landfill.“So we urge people to dispose of their hot ash by other means or simply wait until the ashes are cold," he said.Mr O’Brien said even though there had been unseasonal warmer weather for winter, Council would like to remind those residents still using their fireplaces about disposal of hot ashes."There may be a little more colder weather along the way before spring so we're asking residents to please ensure they follow this safety message," he said.

Clifton Country Week Kicks Off in OctoberClifton is kicking off Country Week 2013 on October 18th. The first event involves food, from the QCWA Ladies, so you know it will be good - the only way to start off a week of festivities. Beforehand however, our gardners will be hoping for a bit of rain to kickstart their floral contributions. There will be markets, Iris and Rose Show, Observation Car Rally, Races, Teddy Bears Picnic and a locally written, acted and produced play titles "Feedalot" to tempt visitors into the town. These are only a few of the items on the agenda. Programmes will be available from Allora shops, we want all the visitors we can get. So please keep 18th to 26th October free to enjoy Country Week in Clifton.

Match reportsThe boys all played well in each of their games. All the boys lifted for the occasion and played some great team football against some very tough teams. They went down in there first game against Nerangba, a game that could have been in there grasp but we

were having a slow start after the early rise and long bus trip (probably for the kids too). There second game against Albany Ck Gold was lot lot better with the team firing they took the win, in there third game they were outplayed by corina, a team that went through to take second place. Their behaviour and sportmanship on saturday was excellent and they should be commended on this. I would like to thank Clint Henry for all of his help over the years and Clint, Roy Nott and Tom Ryan for coming down Saturday to help out. Credit must also be given to Joe Morris for running the line throughout the day.Grand Final Match Report - Regardless of today's result being in favour of Goondiwindi I would like to say how proud I am of this team for their efforts this year.

From the 1st trial game we had, I always believed that this team had the ability to make the Grand Final, today they tried very hard, dug in deep when they needed to, and walked off the Stanthorpe field with their head held high. The look on their faces told me that they tried hard, they were disappointed with the result but still understood their achievements this year.Today Darby Peardon was awarded the major award of best and fairest for the U11 GF, all year Darby has played great football and to be awarded this award in a losing team is testament to his ability and sportsmanship.Highlights of the grand final today were plenty of personable best efforts:Darby Peardon - Made great cover tackles to stop certain tries.Wesley Lasserre - Sliding defence very good, worked very hard to chase down breaks.Lachlan Harris - Some good big tackles, worked hard marking a real danger on his wing.Declan Sullivan - Great under the high ball. Massive improvement. Patrick O'Brien - Support play was good, always getting

U11's Warriors 2013 runners up
