CSA Dinner and Presentation evening update

First, all the successful swims and in spite of the awful weather and excruciatingly coldmornings, there were many. Pride of place has to go to Chloe McCardel who actually ended updoing 2.25 ways before being beaten by the cold. Her second leg in 9.30 was the fastest swimof the year, for the second year. As for the others, something exceptional could be said foreach of them.

Marathon Heavyweight Leaves a Massive Legacy in His Wake

We were saddened to hear of the death of Jim Doty who passed away during the summer in thecompany of his family near Boston. He was not a CSA swimmer, but nevertheless, a greatadvocate of open water swimming.

The marathon swimming icon from New England was inducted in the International MarathonSwimming Hall of Fame as an Honour Swimmer in 2002 and served on its Board of Directorsfor a number of years.

His sense of service and contributions to the sport were provided over decades. Jim was thepresident and treasurer of the New England Marathon Swimming Association that promotedopen water swimming and hosted the annual Boston Light Swim and numerous others fromone to five miles. He published booklets on swims involving tidal flows, jellyfish and pollutioneffects on seaweed and fish.

He studied the medical effects of cold water and the stress and strain on the body from longdistance swimming and was always dipping into his own pocket to support the sport.

Shirley May France dies

When Shirley May France, then a pretty 17 year old Massachusetts school-girl dived into the water offCap Gris Nez in France in 1949, she hoped to become the youngest person ever to swim the 21-mileEnglish Channel. Ten and a half hours later though, freeing and in danger of drowning, she had to be

Page 7: Celebrating 85 years of serving Channel Swimmerschannelswimmingassociation.org/images/documents/csa...934 Cindy Walsh USA 14 19 935 Christian Damgaard Denmark 10 14 936 Robert Bohane

7

pulled, much against her wishes, from the water six miles from her goal. It didn't matter though, because she had already captured hearts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Growing up in Somerset, Mass. Shirley Setters (nee France) began swimming competitively at an earlyage with the encouragement of her father, himself a former amateur swimming champion. She swam33 miles across Michigan's Lake St. Clair at 14, and fared well as the only woman in a 1948competition across Lake George in New York. The idea of swimming the channel was the product of"her father's ambitions" and a clever press agent. Soon photos of her clad in a swimsuit appeared innewspapers across the US and Europe. The promotional frenzy was driven in part by rumors that sheintended to swim in the nude, but what captivated readers in the end was her valiant attempt to stay inthe water and keep swimming.

Despite her unsuccessful attempt, she was greeted at home with bags of fan mail, dozens of marriageproposals and ticker-tape parades. She attempted the Channel on two subsequent occasions but didn'tsucceed. A promised Hollywood contract never materialized, but she socialized with some of thefamous figures of the era, including Frank Sinatra, Jackie Robinson and Clark Gable.

Shirley's later years bore little resemblance to her early brush with celebrity. She lived in Somersetmuch of her life, marrying, raising children and working at her family's pork pie restaurant. Shediscouraged her children from swimming, her son Donald said, because she regretted not having anormal childhood. "My mother was a very determined person and was very confident that she could doanything," he said, calling her life, "truly an inspiring story about trying."

Tom Hetzel Honoured at Valero Swim Meet Corpus Christi, TX USA

Tim Byerly from Coastal Bend All Stars, Corpus Christi, wrote to us saying:We honoured Tom Hetzel by having a "Tom Hetzel Day" at our pool meet. We gave awards to the kidswho had the most points in the mile and 400 Freestyle. One of the winners was from Mexico. Attachedare pictures of Tom's family. Tom's daughter Patti and his granddaughter gave out the awards. Hisnephew and sister Margaret attended. We most likely will make this an annual event at our meet, depending on what Tom's family prefer. The kids also got to view the certificates the ChannelSwimming Association presents to swimmers that complete the crossing.

Peter Frayne dies

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Peter Frayne earlier in the year. Peter was oneof our most dedicated members and observers from 1951 to 1974. At one time he was also ourAssistant Honorary Secretary. Amongst the galaxy of swimming stars he observed were FlorenceChadwick, Gerald Forsberg, Mihir Sen, Mervyn Sharp, Harry Huffaker and Des Renford.

Montserrat Tresserras 1959 and 1962 wrote:I remember very well Peter Frayne and will never forget him. I have seen Peter crying because aswimmer was unsuccessful. I have seen Peter celebrating a success and he was always surrounded bythe swimmers of "my day" (1957-63). He was happy with all swimmers. If in the future we have to putany name to a trophy it would be very good to put "Peter Frayne", example: the best observer of theyear....He was a great observer which means that he was a very great support for the CSA. We mustnot forget him!

News from Dr. Harry Huffaker

My first wife's (Chris) daughter and I have been very close since she was born. To the extent that sheasked me to walk her down the aisle at her wedding. She now lives in Seattle. From time to timeAlaska air offers a $95 airfare to Sun Valley and on such occasions she has come to Idaho for a shortvisit. After plans were made for that to happen once again on June 8, she phoned and told me that whenshe mentioned to Chris about her plans, Chris pointed out that we were married in Dover 50 years ago.

Portsea Island: 7h20m50sThe swim of a lifetime

Page 12: Celebrating 85 years of serving Channel Swimmerschannelswimmingassociation.org/images/documents/csa...934 Cindy Walsh USA 14 19 935 Christian Damgaard Denmark 10 14 936 Robert Bohane

After six months of planning, I stepped into the water at 0950 on Tuesday at Eastney Beach in

Portsmouth to attempt to become the first person to officially swim around Portsea Island under

the rules set down by the British Long Distance Swimming Association. Meteorologist Simon

Rowell had been providing us with weather information in the lead up to swim, and it became

evident that he'd done a superb job in organising ideal conditions for me when Tuesday morning

dawned with hardly a wisp of a breeze and clear sunny skies.

Given the horrid weather of late, I could hardly even have hoped for such perfect conditions. The

sea was flat calm and the sun was out for the first time in weeks to warm my back as I swam the

21km round the island that is home to the city of Portsmouth. I'd be frantically busy in the run

up to the swim getting all the logistics sorted, training and fundraising. Then on the eve of the

swim, I found out that the BBC was planning to send a satellite truck 'for my finish' at 5pm. No

pressure there then. But as always, it was about getting there rather than aiming for a specific

time, even if that did mean missing out on my own live arrival.

I'm still buzzing with the excitement from Tuesday's swim and as I've spent the last two days

saying very little other than how 'amazing' it was, I'm going to endeavour to write this without

saying it again. Let's see how I get on, but I can make no promises.

As soon as I got in the water at Eastney beach two hours before high water the tide started to

take me towards Langstone Harbour as planned and we made phenomenal progress up towards

Page 13: Celebrating 85 years of serving Channel Swimmerschannelswimmingassociation.org/images/documents/csa...934 Cindy Walsh USA 14 19 935 Christian Damgaard Denmark 10 14 936 Robert Bohane

13

the Eastern Road Bridge. Despite some cramp in my toes for the first quarter of an hour, I soon

got into the groove and tried to focus on enjoying the swim that had been so long in the planning.

The gravel ship failed to materialise, so we stayed in the channel and flew up towards the point at

which the main support RIB would peel off and leave me to swim along the northern stretch

accompanied by just my three kayakers due to the lack of headroom under the bridges at high

water.

Along the northern stretch between the Eastern Road Brige and Tipner Point, our recces paid off

and we made good progress under the bridges I'd been dreading including the 'electrified - keep

away' railway bridge and past the endless signs reading 'Polluted water: No bathing'. I faced a

particularly unpleasant patch of water under the bridges over the Hilsea roundabout which

appear to house a few hundred pigeons, with a good inch of scummy browny-green foam on the

surface topped off with a layer of pigeon poo. It was definitely a moment to keep my mouth

closed (probably a blissful relief for my kayakers) and Tracie French managed to capture the

picture above as I swam up to the bridge in question. We think it merits a caption competition, so

answers on a postcard please.

Page 14: Celebrating 85 years of serving Channel Swimmerschannelswimmingassociation.org/images/documents/csa...934 Cindy Walsh USA 14 19 935 Christian Damgaard Denmark 10 14 936 Robert Bohane

14

As I cleared Hilsea Lines and swam under the M275 motorway to Tipner point we were rejoined

by Corinne, Michelle and Jan on the main support boat, Anne and John on the secodary support

boat and the media boa provided by RIBsharet, and we got into formation ready for our

approach to Portsmouth's busy harbour.

As I swam off the Continental Ferry Port, a Brittany Ferry approached reminding me of some of

our close encounters during my swims across the Channel and the Strait of Gibraltar, but we

were in very safe hands with an escort from the MOD Marine Police through the harbour. It's

quite something to see these huge vessels towering above you when you're in the water, but I just

kept swimming to ensure we didn't slip behind schedule thinking of the BBC satellite truck and,

more importantly, the chilli that Sarah was whipping up for us back at Hardy's at Haslar

Marina.

Page 15: Celebrating 85 years of serving Channel Swimmerschannelswimmingassociation.org/images/documents/csa...934 Cindy Walsh USA 14 19 935 Christian Damgaard Denmark 10 14 936 Robert Bohane

15

After I passed the Continental Ferry Port, things got even more spectacular from my vantage

point in the water as I swam past the Naval Dockyard and the ships moored alongside including

HMS Lancaster. Despite the water the water temperature being little more than 13 degrees, and

swimming in just a swimsuit to adhere to the BLDSA rules, I barely felt the cold due to the

stunning sights as I made my way through the harbour stroke by stroke. The crew of the

superyacht, Leander, moored up on the outside of Gunwharf Quays lined up to watch me pass

and I gave them a wave, hoping they might invite us for celebratory drinks on board later, but

sadly we were moving far too fast to find out.

I was bidding to become the first person to complete a solo swim around Portsesa Island under

the rules of the British Long Distance Swimming Association, the organisation which ratifies such

swims in the UK. The rules stated that I should wear just a swimsuit, cap and goggles, use no

artificial aids and must not make contact with anyone or anything during the swim. I followed all

the rules and felt exceptionally privileged to be one of a very small handful of people who have

had the opportunity to swim through Portsmouth's iconic harbour.

Page 16: Celebrating 85 years of serving Channel Swimmerschannelswimmingassociation.org/images/documents/csa...934 Cindy Walsh USA 14 19 935 Christian Damgaard Denmark 10 14 936 Robert Bohane

16

A personal highlight was swimming past the HMS Warrior, as I approached the mouth of the

harbour and Gunwharf Quays under the shadow of the towering Spinnaker Tower. With over

four knots of tide at one stage I was flying and hardly had time to take in the experience, as

friends, family and supporters cheered me on from the shore. On rounding the corner towards

Southsea Castle I got stuck in a back eddie and it felt like I was swimming on the spot for over

half an hour, before I finally saw the weed below me start to stream towards the finish again,

carrying me to the point at which the foghorn would sound to mark the end of my inaugural

record swim.

After a long slog up Southsea and Eastney beaches powered by Red Bull, Percy Pigs and

paracetamol, I completed the circumnavigation in 7 hours 20 minutes and 50 seconds. It was a

fantastic feeling for all the hard work to pay off and to be greeted on the beach by my mum,

Deefa and so many friends including volunteers from the Samaritans, one of the charities I raise

Page 17: Celebrating 85 years of serving Channel Swimmerschannelswimmingassociation.org/images/documents/csa...934 Cindy Walsh USA 14 19 935 Christian Damgaard Denmark 10 14 936 Robert Bohane

funds for. I'm still trying to get the final remnants of lanolin off and have a constant stream of the

Solent pouring out of my sinuses, but I'm chuffed to bits to have done what I set out to do and

had so much fun along the way. The experience of swimming through Portsmouth Harbour past

the Continental Ferry Port, the Naval Dockyard, HMS Warrior, Gunwharf Quays and the

Spinnaker Tower will stay with me for the rest of my life. And shall I tell you what the truly

incredible thing is? That I've managed to write an account of it without saying that word.

Please do not be shy in keeping us up to date with what you have raised andfor whom. Our swimmers have been raising funds for good causes since the Lynmouth Floodsof 1952 and possibly earlier. Next year will be upon us very soon so a quickreminder to swimmers wanting to swim the Channel – get your information/registrationpacks early rather than last minute rush.
