Front Cover: “Peonies after the Rain ” by Mac McNamar, our featured member in this issue.

Author’s note: This is part 6, the last part of a six-part series of articles about the Camera Club, which started with the March 2016 Cameraderie’s article “The Camera Club” by Harold C. Kime and “The Camera Club’s Vocabulary”, continuing with Joel Goldstein’s Club Overview and Bette Harper’s Club’s Activities in the June issue of Cameraderie. Part five, in the last issue, detailed the many positions of the Club’s Board of Directors and other supporting roles.

Part 1 & 2: “The Camera Club” and Club’s Vocabulary Part 3 & 4: Overview and Club Activities Part 5: A Village to run the Camera Club Part 6: Our photography Facilities

The Club’s facilities, 50 years in the making, are located in Clubhouse 4 of the Laguna Woods Village. They include all equipment needed for a well-rounded photographic endeavor.

Several PCs and Mac computers loaded with the latest photo editing software (Photoshop Suite, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, Proshow Gold and Producer, etc.) provide tools to work on your images, so that you can get them ready for the year-round critiques or the annual slide show competition. Two printers are also available for prints up to 17 inches wide, and one even prints on canvas. Sheet stock available for purchase at the Photo Lab tops out at 17x22 inches in size.

Should you wish to mat your own prints, the matting room is equipped with several mat cutters, board cutters, and hot press machines.

What if you want to channel your skills in portraiture? A studio is at your disposition. All you need to do is reserve it and all the lighting, stands, background are yours to use.

There is also the Fred Granger Learning Center that holds up to a dozen workstations with PCs, Mac computers and software. Many hands-on

The Camera Club’s Facilities By Mary-Rose Hoang

classes have been conducted at this location and many more are planned for 2017.

A big classroom where you can admire the photography of your fellow members rounds out the facilities. Countless members are very familiar with this classroom where they attend numerous Saddleback Emeritus classes on photography and workshops by our members. It also serves as meeting room for the Board meetings.

And on a final note, did you know that as members of the club, you are welcome to use these facilities? You can also do your own printing or matting, paying only a nominal material fee of course. Just come by at times when the lab is supervised (which is most weekdays and some weeknights and weekends) by our own volunteering and very knowledgeable members and ask them for help. Better yet, why not volunteer yourself as a lab supervisor? Training is provided. So contact Steve Martin if you’re interested.

In conclusion, we hope that through this series of articles you’ve a better grasp of what our club is, of who we are, and of what the facilities and activities we offer to you, our members. A club is only vibrant as the members take an active participation in the club’s life. Therefore we do hope to see all of you at our club events and facilities.

Yearend Competition Results - Continued

The Critiques process remains pretty much the

same as for 2016, except for the following

changes and announcements that have been

approved by the Board, effective for 2017.

1. For two of the Digital critiques held during the

year, in addition to the current categories of

color pictorial, monochrome, and special

subject, a 4th category of “non-scored” images

will be included. Each member can submit up to

two entries to this “non-scored” and open

category which means any topic will be

acceptable. This new category will allow any

club member to enter images and have a

professional judge review them for critique input.

2. In the Digital division, images entered in

special subject category during the year in

periodic critiques will be allowed as entries in

the color pictorial category for yearend

competition. There will be no change in the

number of entries allowed in the categories at

yearend: 4 entries for color pictorial

and 3 entries for monochrome.

3. Except for the yearend competition, the

names of all judges will be pre-announced for

the critiques.

4. The 6 digital special subject categories for

2017 will be street photography, glass, curves,

cellphone photography, transportation, and

pattern. These categories and their descriptions

will be posted on the club website. (January will

feature transportation as the special subject and

Jim Selkin as judge.)

5. The 2 special subject categories for print

critiques in 2017 will be animals and water.

6. Finally, images submitted for digital critiques

will need to first have their resolution set to a

dimension of 150 pixels per inch and then be

sized to a maximum width of 1400 pixels (for

landscape orientation) and height of 1050 pixels

(for portrait orientation.) Refer to the September

2016 Cameraderie, Page 9 for details on how to resize

images for digital critiques.

SPOTLIGHT on our MEMBERS

Many Thanks to Mac McNamar

By Mike Bray

Earlier this week I had a chance to visit with Mac

and discover some of his background and

personal history. Mac was originally from a very

small town in Minnesota and spent most of his

youth in the Minneapolis area. The youngest of 6

children, Mac was raised in turn by his mother

(who passed away when Mac was 10), his aunt,

and finally, an older sister. Mac involved himself

in the band while in high school, and progressed

from clarinet to trumpet and finally to a

sousaphone. I had to research that one; it is also

called a marching tuba. Mac credits mentorship

of his band instructor as being one of the

strongest and most positive influences of his early

life.

After high school, Mac found his first job as a

dispatcher for Western Union, but not long into his

working career Mac received his draft notice. Mac

was trained by the Army to be a helicopter

mechanic, but ended up spending 18 months as a

company clerk in Fort Bragg. He was discharged

from his Army duties two months before his unit

was sent to Korea.

Mac followed his military service with working

stints at Western Union and Honeywell, and put in

Mac McNamar is stepping down this December from the

position of president of the Laguna Woods Camera Club.

Mac has served as our club president for the past 5 years.

Finding someone to fill the role of club president is not easy,

as most of our members shy away from any board position.

The role of president is a demanding one and Mac has

served in its capacity with dedication and a great ability to

work well with other members of the board while keeping

the best interests of the general membership foremost on

the club agenda. Mac is the current recipient of the Lydia

Savedoff award which was presented to Mac at the

December holiday party in tribute for his work and loyalty to

the camera club.

2 years at the University of Minnesota studying

business administration on the G.I. bill. All

paths ultimately led to a lifelong career in the

computer field, where Mac finished a 23-year

career with Certified Grocers in southern

California.

In 1964, Mac took a date to a party where he

first met Linda. Quickly realizing he was with

the wrong girl, Mac started dating Linda. The

courtship lasted only 4 months before the well

matched pair sped off to Las Vegas and got

married! By my quick calculation, Mac and

Linda have celebrated 52 anniversaries and

are still counting.

Soon after moving to Leisure World in 2007,

Mac joined the camera club thanks to a chance

encounter with Fred Granger. Through Fred’s

classes and encouragement, Mac became a

lab supervisor and later, a member of the

board of directors.

Mac’s interest in photography was casual

before he joined the camera club, reserved

primarily for social gatherings and travel. To

celebrate their 40th anniversary, Mac and

*** WALL DISPLAY ***

To ring in the year 2017, Clubhouse 4 Classroom is now displaying the photography of Bill

Hurd, Violet Kong, and Russ Lazar.

It is also showcasing a Black and White exhibit with works by Lawrence Bau, Mike Bray,

Walter Drucker, Karen Fogarty, Jim Graver, Bette Harper, George Harper, Violet Kong,

Russ Lazar, George Mellevold, Mickey Mellevold, Braulio Montesino, Patricia Patti,

Mark Rabinowitch, and Dee Tucker.

Come by and enjoy the exhibits.

The next special subject gallery will be “Street Photography.”

Contact Patricia Patti at [email protected] for an opportunity to display your work.

Linda vacationed in Maui. For this occasion,

Mac purchased an 8 megapixel Kodak camera to

record their tropical adventure. Mac has since

moved on to a Nikon 5100 and shoots locally at

spots such as Sherman Gardens and San

Joaquin Reserve.

Mac takes special pride in the Fred Granger

Learning Center. The classroom layout and

remodel were started under the leadership of Pat

Wilkinson, but were completed and outfitted last

year under Mac’s watch. Mac notes that the club

continues to be competitive and develop the

photographic capabilities of many members, but

our trend in attracting new members has been

more focused on entertainment and education

than competition. The biggest challenge facing

the club currently is a declining membership

base. Mac notes that the 10% rule restricting

memberships of those living outside the Village

has had a negative impact on our overall

membership base and in participation levels in

critiques and showcase events.

In 2017, Mac will remain on the camera club

board of directors as immediate past president.

He will continue his role in handling publicity and

lending guidance to the club’s direction in the

future.

On December 11th, 2016 the Camera Club

hosted a 50th Anniversary and Awards Holiday

dinner. Over 116 people attended the

celebration and enjoyed a delicious cocktail

and dinner catered by Yolanda. The highlight

of the evening was the presentation of the

Lydia Savedoff Award to Mac McNamar by

our new president Mark Rabinowitch. Mac has

dedicated years of hard work and leadership

that resulted in a successful club. Besides the

usual first, second and third places awards,

numerous other awards included the highest

accumulated points and scores from the year’s

print and digital critiques. Digital photographs

were projected throughout the evening and an

A-frame gallery displayed club members’ prints.

Barbara Woolweaver and her team

coordinated the memorable event with special

attention to detail. Special thanks to piano

player, Faith Berton-Dublin; decorators, Jan

Philips and Catherine Marra; our MC, David

Dearing; event greeters, Anne and Bob

Hoffelder, Judy Nixon and the evening's

photographer, Pat Patti. Our heartfelt gratitude

to the many volunteers who made the evening

a wonderful celebration!

A big Thank You to Mac McNamar and the 2016 Board of Directors for another great year full of fun activities, classes, workshops, and showcases. We wish the incoming president, Mark Rabinowitch, and the 2017 Board a new year of outstanding achievements for the club. We also want to recognize the enormous contribution and service of outgoing board members Catherine Marra, Jim Graver, and David Shepherd over the years. Thank you for your dedication, tireless work, and great service to the club and our members.

8 Tips for Better Composition By Mike Bray

1. Rule of Thirds

Okay, we’ve all heard this one, but we often forget to apply it to our photographs. This often happens because our focusing point is always at the center-point in our viewfinder. Try moving the focusing point in your camera to place the main subject off center, or use a crop that places the main subject off center.

2. Break the Rule of Thirds

Now and then breaking the rule of thirds is a really good idea; just don’t over-do it. Make sure the technique works with the photo you choose!

3. Frame within a Frame

Sometimes you can utilize elements in the foreground to create a frame surrounding your primary subject. This is another technique that will lead the viewer’s eye into your image.

4. Simplicity: Avoid a busy background

Busy features behind your main subject detract from your main focal point. From time to time by moving your body position, you can remove distracting elements in your photograph. With pelicans, I sometimes try to isolate the pelican against the ocean or sky as a background.

5. Fill the Frame

Filling the frame forces the viewer to focus on your image and see the whole of your composition without distracting elements.

Page 18: Celebrating 50 Years of Service - lhcameraclub.com€¦ · Joel Goldstein’s Club Overview and Bette Harper’s Club’s Activities in the June issue of Cameraderie. Part five, in

December 2016 Page Cameraderie 17

6. Foreground Interest and Depth

By adding items of interest in the foreground, you can create a better feeling of depth in an image. This is one technique you can use to give your photograph a more 3D effect.

7. Look for Leading Lines

Strong leading lines take the viewer’s eye through an image. Paths, walls or patterns can be used as leading lines.

8. The Rule of Space

This compositional guideline suggests leaving space in the direction your subject is moving. This is also true for positioning people so that they are looking into the photograph rather than out the closest edge.

Remember, these rules are general suggestions that work much of the time and are utilized by many of our camera club’s best photographers. See if they work for you! (Adapted from “20 Compositional Techniques That Will Improve Your Photos” by Barry O. Carroll.)
