Welcome to our new Director of Nursing and Clinical Services
I am delighted to introduce you to Caroline Stoner who
started with us as Director of Nursing and Clinical
Services on 11th March 2013 on an interim basis.
Caroline is a very experienced nurse who has worked in
senior roles in the independent nursing home and care
home sector, and she has been the manager in charge of
a number of homes. She has been the lead for neurologi-
cal services in two organisations and so has good knowl-
edge of the particular needs of our residents.
I am sure you will join me
in wishing Caroline every
success in the post.
We were very sorry to see
Wendy Chen leave us after
five years as Director of
Nursing. During this time

well as leading our care
services. Wendy very much
had The Marillac at heart
and she received a fitting
tribute at a leaving event
where lots of staff, families
and residents gave fond
farewells.

A Musical Fundraiser
For the past two years we have
been treated to a wonderful evening
of classical guitar music and cross-
overs performed in The Marillac
Chapel by Professor Charles
William Pohl.
Professor Pohl has generously
given his time and talent once again
to raise funds for Marillac Care. His
repertoire ranges from Bach,
Mozart and Puccini through the
Beatles to Whitney Houston, there
truly is something for everyone!
He has studied classical guitar
under Julian Bream (UK), Narciso
Yepes (Spain) and Eliot Fisk
(USA), frequently giving charity
solo recitals in the UK, USA, Israel,
China, Taiwan, Russia, Ukraine,
Italy, Austria, Portugal, Cyprus and
Spain.
On May 3rd Professor Pohl will be
entertaining us once again.
The performance starts at 7.30pm,
tickets are priced at £10 and include
cheese and wine which will be
served in the Hall after the perform-
ance.
Tickets are available from
Reception.
Fundraising
As a small independent care home, Marillac Care is challenged to maintain its place in the marketplace in today’s health and
social care climate. Being a not for profit care home it relies on the goodwill and generosity of individuals and organisations to
enable much of the extras that provide quality and comfort to our residents’ lives.
Our residents require specialist skills and therapeutic interventions that are not fully funded by PCTs and health trusts. We need
to raise at least £250,000 a year to enable us to make a real difference to each individual’s quality of life.

Downham Church of England School
supports Marillac Care
A caring spirit obviously runs in Denise Dove’s family!
Denise has worked on St Vincent’s unit for six years—
after telling her grandson Brayden about the Marillac and
the people she cares for he was inspired to suggest that fund-
raising for the Marillac would be a good idea.
Brayden wrote a lovely essay about The Marillac in support
of his suggestion; here is an extract:
“My chosen charity is the Marillac Care Home in Brentwood, Essex.
My Nana is a carer there and she often tells us of the very sad, heartbreaking stories of how the disabilities have happened. Some people were born with them and some people had a terrible accident that has left them like that.
This is so tragic for them and their families, but the Marillac is there to help.
Amazingly, it is run only by money given by charities. They constantly need to think of ways to get money to help the disabled people stay at the Marillac.....
.......i know how thankful they would be if we could raise some money for them to help in any small way we can, and also that you surely would love to support this very worthy cause.”
Brayden’s essay obviously pulled on his teacher’s heart
strings and Marillac Care was chosen!
His class organised a Charity Fayre and invited the whole
school. Cakes and Christmas gifts were on sale and the won-
derful amount of £742.18 was raised.
Sr Bridie Dowd and Denise visited the school and are
pictured being presented with a cheque.
A huge ‘thank you” to Brayden, Class RP and all at
Downham Church of England School who helped
with his fundraising!
Coffee Morning
The first Coffee Morning of 2013 took place on
Saturday 9th March. It was an opportunity to
show our appreciation of our amazing
volunteers for all they do for The Marillac and
our residents. It was a chance to be ‘off duty’
and catch up and share experiences and ex-
change ideas, perhaps hearing about a new
activity to help with.
By giving their time and talents, they make a
very real difference to our residents’ experi-
ence, whether helping with group activities,
spending time with an individual resident or
helping to keep our beautiful grounds in order.
Some volunteers have been with us for many
years, whilst others are relative newcomers and
so it was lovely to see so many getting together
for coffee and a chat.
Our next Coffee Morning will be on 10th June.
Volunteer News
Volunteering at Marillac Care is a rewarding way to do something special for your local community.
We welcome volunteers over the age of 16 who can spare an hour or two, or maybe more, each week.
If you would like to find out more about our volunteering opportunities,
please contact Amanda, our volunteer coordinator on 01277 220276 or [email protected]
Thank you to all our fantastic Volunteers!
Since November last year, Thursday afternoons have seen
visits from a group of Brentwood County High School pupils
who are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
The group of students, accompanied by Head of PE, Miss
Wilson, have been undertaking a variety of tasks such as
making Christmas decorations for residents’ rooms and brass
polishing.
They are currently helping our groundsman, Alan, to weed and
clear the beds around the grounds in preparation for Spring—
their help is much appreciated and is making the grounds look
so lovely!
We are grateful to have the support of our local schools.
Minibus appeal
Our minibuses are essential to The Marillac and its Residents.
Our minibuses enable our residents to be part of the wider
community and are used in many ways.
They may be used by residents
attending essential appoint-
ments at hospitals and doctors
surgeries or may be used by
residents to facilitate visits
home.
Throughout the year they are
also used to enable residents to
go on shopping trips or to
access college courses.

Our existing minibuses are now needing to be replaced and so
we are beginning to fundraise for their replacement.
We will need to raise £22500 to fund the new minibus. Watch
our progress in reception—and if you have a fundraising idea
or would like to make a donation, we would love to hear from
you!
BCHS cleans up!
The Marillac's League of Friends is once again gearing up for
the year’s fundraising.
Throughout the year they plan a varied schedule of events which
include Auctions, fundraising quizzes and other social events, not
forgetting the legendary Marillac Car Boot Sales!
The support of the League of Friends is invaluable, raising
much needed funds to support our work. Their events are also
great social successes, bringing together Friends, families, staff
and residents.
The League of Friends “200” Club
Attending one of the many fundraising events organised by the
League of Friends is a great way to support Marillac Care—but,
even if you are unable to come along to one of our fundraising
events, you can still support us by joining the League of
Friends of The Marillac “200” Club. This is limited to 200
people (anyone can join). Annual subscription is £12 and there
are two prizes of £25 each month with an additional prize of
£100 every other month.
Full details of the 200 club are available from Reception.
If you would like to join the League of Friends, or if you are
able to help in any way, we would love to hear from you!
The League meets on the first Thursday of every month and is
currently chaired by Mr Eamonn Brennan.
He can be contacted on 01277 220276.

Marillac People
Celebrating good practice
At the Marillac we care for people with varied and complex
disabilities and a whole range of specialist equipment is employed.
Gareth Westrip has been working as a healthcare Assistant on St
Louise’s unit for the past four years and, as part of his ongoing
personal development, has taken the lead in passing on good practice
in the use of key pieces of equipment.
He has undergone training in the use of the feed pump, suction equip-
ment, hoist and dinamap (blood pressure equipment). This will enable
him to pass on basic equipment training to new staff and provide
valuable refresher knowledge for existing staff. St Louise’s
