From the CAADE President & Executive Director:

Welcome to our 30th Annual CAADE Conference

As your new CAADE President I am pleased to welcome you to our 30th annual CAADE Conference — Celebrating 30 Years of Leading the Way. We are delighted to also be celebrating our second year of collaboration with Breining Institute and we once again welcome Breining members into the CAADE Community. As is the case each year, we have a sterling lineup of experts in evidence-based addiction treatment who will be presenting cutting edge information in multiple sessions over the next two and a half days. You have a diverse list of exciting topics to choose from.

I want to say thank you to our Executive Director, our staff, and our generous volun-teers for the amazing work they have done in planning this conference. We have grown exponentially as an organization in the past few years and our conference attendance has skyrocketed. Putting this annual event together is a herculean task which could not be accomplished without the tireless efforts of our dedicated team. I am so proud of them all and I am honored to serve as CAADE’s president for the next two years. I look forward to meeting you over the next few days. Please come find me and introduce yourself. Enjoy the conference!

Sincerely, Ben Salazar Celebrating 30 Years of Leading the Way

I am thrilled to welcome you to the 30th Annual CAADE Conference. We are so proud to be celebrating 30 years of leading the way in promoting and supporting quality higher edu-cation in addiction studies. As you will discover over the next few days, CAADE has been collaborating with CCAPP and CADTP in writing and co-sponsoring SB1101 (Wieckowski), legislation which would launch a master’s level license for addiction counselors in Califor-nia. There is still much work to do with writing amendments to the bill, developing a uni-form career ladder for certified counselors, and getting buy-in from many stakeholder groups across the state. Things change daily, and we will be seeking your input and feed-back as the process unfolds.

I extend a sincere “welcome home!” to our new members from Breining. We are honored that you have decided to joined us. And to all of our dedicated, long-time CAADE college students, CATCs, and members, “welcome back!” You are so incredibly important to us. We hope that everything we have put together for you this weekend is educational, and fun, too! Learn and enjoy. You deserve it.

Warmest regards, Lori Phelps

8:30 am to 10:00 am Keynote Speaker: Dr. Darryl Inaba Grand Nave Ballroom

Marijuana and Its Impact on the Developing Adolescent Brain A growing body of medical evidence demonstrates that marijuana (THC), especially in its newer highly potent forms

(“edibles and BHO”), and the new synthetic cannabinoids (“Spice”), result in addiction, medical, and mental health

problems. This presentation will look at marijuana as a drug: It’s medical and abuse potential relative to other

psychoactive substances. It will revisit its botany, chemistry, pharmacology, impact on the adolescent brain, and

especially the 8-9% of its users who develop Cannabis Use Disorder. The developing adolescent brain is most

vulnerable to THC’s toxic and addictive effects. This will be a major emphasis of this presentation.

Yoga For Health in Recovery Presenter: Kelli Daniels Bataglieri Yoga is a mind and body practice with historical origins in ancient Indian philosophy. Like other meditative movement practices used for health purposes, various styles of yoga typically combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation. In this session, Ms. Daniels reveals the scientific foundation for using yoga as part of a holistic approach to recovery from addiction. Wear relaxing clothes and bring a towel so that you can experience firsthand the benefits of yoga for deepening the physical and spiritual aspects of recovery. Discover for yourself why yoga has been called “prayer in motion.” Building a Culture of Co-Occurring Competency Presenter: Dr. Mark Stanford Beavis Best practices in the treatment of persons with co-occurring disorders have been well established through national or-ganizations including SAMHSA, IRETA, ATTC, The National Council on Behavioral Health and others. However, what is not readily available to providers and systems of care are helpful tips and ways to begin to build and sustain a culture of co-occurring competency. This presentation reviews the different ways this can happen where participants can discover ideas, learn about and take back to their organizations, various ways to reinforce the provider network about creating and managing a culture of co-occurring competency.

What Do You Really Know About Clinical Supervision? Beavis Presenter: Lynn Delvaux Competent Clinical Supervision is complex for students, trainees, practitioners and supervisors. The responsibilities of a Clinical Supervisor also require clinical competencies such as professional knowledge, skills, values and "metacompetence." In order to ethically encourage and reinforce the supervisees' skill development, the Clinical Su-pervisor must be willing and ready to self-assess, self-reflect and self-motivate. Here's the time and space to under-stand Clinical Supervision "from the inside out."

Reaching the Needs of the Growing Latino Population: Tofanelli Are You Providing Culturally Responsive Services? Presenter: Isabel S. Perez-Yanez This workshop will provide an overview on understanding the cultural context of working with the Latino communi-ties. Emphasis will be on mental health and alcohol and drug issues. As the Latino population increases in size in the United States, service providers from all disciplines will find it necessary to be able to integrate culturally responsive services to increase recruitment and retention of Latinos. Discussion will include strategies and tools that support cul-tural responsiveness in assessment, evaluation and treatment. Finally, recommendations will be made on ways to inte-grate culturally responsive approaches in services to Latinos. Senior Ex-Offender Program Campagno Presenter: Frank Williams The Bayview Hunters Point Multipurpose Senior Services, Inc. (MSS) developed the Senior Ex-Offender Program (SEOP) in 2001 to provide comprehensive services to seniors who are being released from the prison system. The long-term goal of SEOP is to provide a successful transition from incarceration to the community, where seniors will be able to support themselves financially, engage in healthy family and other social relationships. The presenter will discuss how to address the needs of this population. Further discussion topics will cover aging, medical, mental health and substance abuse issues of this special population.

Issues & Answers About Certification & Licensure Bataglieri Panel of Experts (Laws and Ethics) The issues surrounding addiction counselor certification and licensure in California, and the nation, can often seem confusing for students, counselors, and employers. This panel will discuss everything you ever wanted to know about Addiction Counselor Certification Regulations in California, the “5-year rule,” education and supervision require-ments, pending Master’s Level Licensure legislation, and other topics relevant to you and your future. Bring your ques-tions and concerns for an informative Q&A session with CAADE staff and Board members. Marijuana and Its Impact on the Developing Adolescent Brain (Continued) Beavis Presenter: Darryl Inaba We know you can never get enough of Dr. Inaba! So we scheduled this session to allow him time to continue with the keynote session he began this morning. ASAM Criteria: What You Need to Know Tofanelli Presenters: Gustavo Fierro and Debra Kelsey The ASAM criteria is the most widely used and comprehensive set of guidelines for placement, continued stay and transfer/discharge of patients with addiction and co-occurring conditions. More High Expectations Compagno Presenter: Ray Lozano If you didn’t get enough of Ray, or if you missed him earlier today, here is your chance to see him up close and per-sonal. PRESENTER BIOGRAPHIE S

Paula Lee is CAADE’s legislative advocate in Sacramento. She studied Human Services at Ameri-can River College and completed the Chemical Dependency Counseling Certificate program at Sac-ramento State University. Paula’s advocacy work has been primarily in the areas of child abuse pre-vention and electoral reform. She is legislative director for Californians for Electoral Reform, a leg-islative advocate for FairVote, Center for Voting and Democracy and is President of the League of Women Voters Sacramento.

Ray Lozano has educated and entertained thousands of students in hundreds of middle schools and high schools from Alaska to Florida, and internationally in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda since 1986. Ray has a talent and gift for conveying what could be construed as boring drug and alco-hol prevention information in such a fun and humorous way that his audiences come away in-formed and entertained. The fact that he has been asked to return to some of the same schools across the nation speaks to Ray’s ability to keep his information updated, fresh and relevant. Ray has completed certification as a Prevention Specialist by the state of California as well as Drug and Alcohol Counselor Certification. Creston Marshino served in the U.S. Navy from 1975-79 and was stationed on USNS Midway Is-land and the U.S.S. Sacramento. He graduated from Rancho Santiago College in 1987, graduated from College of San Mateo in 2006 with an AA in Addiction Studies. He graduated from San Jose State University in 2011 with a BA in Behavioral Science and a double major in Psychology. He worked at the Sequoia Center in Redwood City in 2005 as a Case Manager and went to work for the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2007 as an addiction counselor. Kevin McCauley is a graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. After completion of medi-cal school, he joined the Navy and became a Naval Flight Surgeon. After earning his wings at Pen-sacola, Florida he was assigned to a Marine helicopter squadron (The Red Lions). Later he was transferred to Marine F/A-18 Hornet squadron (Sharpshooters). While working as a flight surgeon he treated pilots with alcohol and drug problems. As a physician, he advocates strongly for the rights of addicts as patients. Dr. McCauley currently lives in Hawaii with his wife.

About Dr. McCauley’s new film: Addiction is a potentially fatal illness - but it is also eminently recoverable. In this film, Dr. Kevin McCauley re-lives his own precarious ear-ly sobriety - negotiating hazards such as hostile prosecutors, treatment programs with divided loyalties, and his own craving brain. Following the advice of the Addiction Med-icine experts who helped him, he replicates the sobriety habits and success of recovering pilots and health care professionals. By framing addiction not as a problem of moral choice but as a safety/risk management challenge, Dr. McCauley explains how recovery is neither rare nor random - with the right kind of support, it can even be expected.

In Memoriam

A Tribute to our Beloved Dr. James Crossen

Dr. Crossen was an icon in the addiction treatment community and was well respected as one of

the founding fathers of addiction treatment education in Southern California. His career spanned

more than 40 years of dedicated love and service to our profession. He passed away on April 4,

2016 and his absence will be deeply felt.

Dr. Crossen was, first and foremost, a champion of the oppressed. He was also an educator,

addiction treatment professional, published author, producer of treatment videos for Hazelden, po-

et, humanitarian, and a driving force as an active board member in the early days of CAADE.

Dr. Crossen was best known as the director of the Addiction Studies Program at Los Angeles

Pierce College, which he founded in 1975 and ran for 37 years until his retirement in 2012. He was also known for his pas-

sion for carrying the message of addiction treatment and recovery throughout the world. He visited many countries and was

instrumental in developing the first ever addiction studies training program in Iran. Many of the countries touched by Dr.

Crossen still utilize his book, Twelve –Step Therapy, as their guiding curriculum.

Although Dr. Crossen was the recipient of many awards and held many credentials (PhD, MFT, RN, CATC V, CADC

II, MAC, ICADC, CCGC, SAP), he would be the first to tell you that the most valuable recognitions for him were his beau-

tiful wife Lola, whom he adored, and his active participation in Alcoholics Anonymous.

Dr. Crossen’s passing leaves a void in our community that can never be filled. His legacy will live on through the

thousands of lives he touched and the army of students he inspired. A memorial service is being planned for the near future.

God speed, dear friend.

Farewell to Professor Paul Sharpe, Mt. San Antonio College

Paul Sharpe, Professor/Director of Alcohol & Drug Counselor Training Pro-gram at Mount San Antonio College from 1997 until his retirement in 2014, passed away in January. Paul received the BA degree from the College of Santa Fe, and earned the MSW degree from California State University, San Bernardi-no. He completed the Certified Substance Abuse Counselor courses at UCLA. Paul was Program Director at American Recovery Center until he was hired by Mt. San Antonio College to oversee their Alcohol and Drug Counselor Training Program in 1997. He served for many years on the CAADE Board of Directors as President, Treasurer, and Chair of the Continuing Education Committee. Professor Sharpe was deeply loved by his students and colleagues. A memorial service was held in his honor on February 6, 2016, at the Unity Church in Po-mona. CAADE wishes to acknowledge Paul’s many years of service as an edu-cator, advocate, and friend.
