GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE INTERNET CONFERENCE 2016The Internet Conference up on the Gold Coast is celebrating its tenth year. & yes, I have been at every one! So when the IC team asked me to write a brief article on the tips & tricks of how to make best use of one’s time at the Internet Conference, I delved into my memory bank, with this summary list.
Prepare early by letting your network know you will be there. & in turn, keep your eyes peeled for those who are letting you know they will be going.
Reach out to the new. OK, I confess, I like to hang out with my besties, friends in the industry I have known & worked with for a long time. But try & challenge yourself to say hi to some new faces. Variety is the spice of life.
Plan your agenda – You can get some serious FOMO if you realize you missed a cracking keynote or stream. Spend some time before the event to put together your agenda of what you would like to go to.
But also be flexible enough to make the odd pivot to something that might have caught your eye once at the event.
Use the event hashtag #RetailglobalAU to be loud & proud.
Get lots of rest before the event & try & plan some rest time after. Look, this conference is about learning, but it is also very social. & after a long day at the conference, you want to continue the conversations into the wee hours.
Spend time in the Expo Hall. Lots of the retail experts are solution providers manning their stands in the expo hall. Make time to check them out. The days of ‘hard sell’ are over. (Except for Helena maybe). These are people who will share best practice, & sure, showcase their solutions. But we need them, & they need us.
Lastly, pluck up the courage to do some of the wild rides at the night of nights event right in Movie World!

From eCommerce, to warehouses, to retail shop fronts, it's time to get all your systems synchronised. Gone are the days of double entry & complicated back-ends. With a better foundation in place, you can spend more time on marketing & launching new products. After all, isn't that why we're in this game? We chatted with Jason Stockton from Emote, leader of Australia’s only gold-tier WooCommerce partner & champion of all things eCommerce, to learn a thing or two about integration.
Which key areas can be improved in the eCommerce & retail space?I think we all know shipping is a major pain point for retailers & customers alike. There have been stacks of solutions recently launched to remove headaches from shipping which can go a long way to improve the customer experience. I also usually see issues with order management, eCommerce & POS integration, & marketing such as loyalty programs & engagement.
Where might a retailer get into trouble when choosing their eCommerce infrastructure?I suppose there are two main areas really: one would be trying to find one system to do everything – it’s an expensive road. Thanks to cloud integration, there are hundreds of systems that talk to each other so you’re not stuck with one system for life; you can mix & match to find your perfect solution. The other one would be retailers trying to force systems to suit their processes, rather than altering process to suit the systems.
How do you suggest business approach integration if they’re new to it?Write up all your ‘must have’ features as well as your ‘nice to have’ features while being as flexible & creative as you can be – this will allow you to draw a map of each system you would like to put in place, & how each of them could work together to allow you to achieve your goals. Your agency will thank you for it!
