Sharing Faith, Celebrating Traditions, and Serving Each Other to the Praise and Glory of God.

We Are Loved By God! HAPPY EASTER!

Dear friends in Christ, this is the Easter message: we are loved by God! God has loved us and sent His Son to save us from our sins so that we might live with Him forever! Sin leads to Death, Jesus leads to Eternal Life. Rejoice in the saving act of God - Jesus Christ is Risen!

This is why the Catholic Church exists, to proclaim Jesus -God’s love made flesh, crucified and raised from the dead. And so, we at Holy Redeemer/St. James commit to welcoming you, loving you and serving you. We will Share Faith, Celebrate Traditions, and Serve Each Oth-er to the Praise and Glory of God; this is why we ex-ist!

To those who have come home (in every sense of that phrase) welcome; we your parish family would be filled with joy to make you part of our community be-yond today (join us at the table of God’s Word and Sacrament, join us at Mass). We want to know you (please ask the greeters how you can register). We want to serve you (please let us know your needs). We want you to be included in our many good works (ask how you might volunteer). You are loved and wanted!

To those who are seeking something deeper and more

profound in your relationship with God, welcome. We invite you to pray with us, especially to join in Adora-tion - a quiet hour in the presence of Jesus in the Eu-charist - every Wednesday, 8pm to 9pm at St. James. Until your relationship with Jesus is solid, none of what we do will make sense. All of the Catholic Church’s teachings and practices are built on a personal rela-tionship with Jesus - then His Church makes sense and makes sense of our lives. I encourage you to consider journeying with us in our Discovering Christ program which begins this Fall. Perhaps you would benefit ac-companying other Adults seeking faith in our RCIA pro-cess (it’s good for Catholics too!). Perhaps you need to talk things out, consider making an appointment with myself or another priest or minister here at your parish.

What I’m trying to say is that we want to help you grow in your relationship with God. To belong to Jesus Christ and the community of Disciples He founded is strength and grace for our journey home to Heaven. We are here: to love, to serve and to celebrate what God has done for us in Christ Jesus His Son! On behalf of all who minister at Holy Redeemer/St. James I wish you a Holy Easter and Easter Peace!

Adult Bible Study: Monday, 10AM, at Holy Redeemer’s Healy Hall conference room.

Seeking Easter Sunday is a day all about seeking. The early Christian commu-nities gathered around the Apostles, seeking more about the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus. Saint Paul told the baptized Colossians to “seek what is above.” Mary of Magdala went to the tomb, seeking to find the Lord’s body so that she could anoint it. We come to church on Easter Sunday seeking many things. For some of us, this is a once‑a‑year journey, when we seek connection with the foundations of the Christian faith. For others, this day is the culmination of a long journey of Lenten repentance. For the newly baptized, this is the first day of a new life filled with prom-ise and expectation. Whatever it is that we seek, let us be inspired by the disciple whom Jesus loved who, when he saw the wrappings of cloth inside the empty tomb, “saw and believed.”

Children’s Liturgy of the Word This ministry provides appropriate scripture readings and reflections for our young minds during the 8:30 AM Mass at St James. The priest dismisses the children before the

lectors begin the readings and they return after the prayer of the faithful.

TV Mass for the Homebound Sunday TV Mass is available for those homebound at 9:00 AM on KDOC-TV, Channel 56 or Charter 165. Check your TV listings for ca-ble/satellite channels. Note: TV Mass does not meet the Sunday Mass obligation for the faith-ful who are able to attend in person.

God’s Word Today Our Lenten journey of conversion today reaches the holy city of Jeru-salem. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Throughout Lent we have been journeying with the Lord to Jerusalem. Today he enters the holy city amid cries of joy and gladness. Those cries of joy turn quickly to cries of pain and anguish, which culminate in the words of abandonment that Jesus utters from the cross. Imagine the despair the Lord experienced when he felt abandoned by all, especially his own Father. As we prepare to listen to God’s word, let us remember the pain and anguish that the Lord Jesus suffered on our behalf. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S. Paluch Company

Today’s Readings First Reading — Peter is an eyewit-ness: The Lord is risen (Acts 10:34a, 37-43). Psalm — This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118). (1) Second Reading — All who are baptized, set your hearts in heaven (Colossians 3:1-4) or

(2) Second Reading — Christ our Passover is sacrificed; therefore let us celebrate (1 Corinthians 5:6b-8). Gospel — Three witnesses, Mary, Peter, and John; each responds to the empty tomb (John 20:1-9) or Mark 16:1-7 (or, at an afternoon or evening Mass, Luke 24:13-35). Treasures From Our Traditions Our tradition has a way of honoring age-old customs, and is patient with how practices unfold in different places. The name of today’s feast illustrates this well. English is a Ger-manic language, and our word

“Easter,” or German “Oester,” points back to the pagan goddess Eoestre, the star of the vernal equi-nox feast. The Greek title “Pasch” reaches back in a more helpful manner to the Hebrew “Pesach,” or “Passover.” “Paschal Triduum” may be slow to replace “Easter” in our vocabulary, but it is clearer about the mystery we celebrate today, the culmination of three days laden with mystery and meaning. You can hear the older term, and the resistance to English influence, in the Irish “Casca” and Scottish “Pask.” Romance languages stay close to the deep paschal tradition, with the French “Pâques,” Spanish “Pascua” and Italian “Pasqua.” Memories of our pagan past with “Oester” will not soon fade away: even Japanese Christians are under her spell, for today’s feast is called “ I-suta.” Swahili, a young lan-guage, takes the more traditional route with “Pasaka.” Each language yields a rich insight into the feast. Spanish includes a sense that today is a “big Sunday” by adding the designation “Pascua” to the greatest feasts, such as “Pascua de la Na-tividad” (Christmas). Once Christ is risen, every step of life’s journey is illuminated by the light of the Pasch!
