These statistics come from my data sample of more than 4000 men. They filled out the online assessment at www.growthclimate.com Here’s what 4000 men report. I keep it a secret: 75% say that they do everything they can to hide the pornography they view from the people around them.” Frequency: 53% say that they view pornography 3-5 times a week or more.” I can’t stop: 76% report that they have told themselves that they are going to stop viewing pornography only to find that they are viewing it again.” I skip activities I generally enjoy: 36% report that they have skipped activities that they generally like so they could be by themselves and view porn.”

Did you know… • Statistics show that 80% of men in evangelical

churches struggle with pornography. • Statistics show that nearly all adults deal with

depression. • Statistics show that codependency is considered

normal or commonplace in churches today.

What defines codependency? An obsession to save, help, fix, cure an addict

Denying the addict the responsibility of looking after themselves Normalizing the abnormal – abuse, lies, betrayal His emotions become the barometer for yours

Neglecting yourself in order to please the addict Accepting the unacceptable

An inability to put up healthy boundaries A desperation to be loved

Equating work with approval An inability to love yourself

Denying reality Having a warped definition of love

CODEPENDENCY Codependency is a term used to describe those who live with someone struggling with a Substance Use Disorder. In most instances, the codependent person assumes the responsibility of caretaker and this often includes putting their own wants and needs aside. They often become chemically dependent themselves and exhibit many of the same characteristics as the Addicted person they are dealing with.

Domestic Violence in America: General Statistics and Facts Women ages 20 to 24 are at greatest risk of becoming victims of domestic violence. More than 4 million women experience physical assault and rape by their partners. 1 in 3 female homicide victims are murdered by their current or former partner every year. What are the Effects of Domestic Violence on Children? More than 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes every year. Children who live in homes where there is domestic violence also suffer abuse or neglect at high rates (30% to 60%). Children exposed to domestic violence at home are more likely to have health problems, including becoming sick more often, having frequent headaches or stomachaches, and being more tired and lethargic. Children are more likely to intervene when they witness severe violence against a parent – which can place a child at great risk for injury or even death.

• In a nutshell, CR is a “sin” recovery ministry. • It is aimed directly at people who want to get

“drastic” with their sin. • The underlying principles work for anyone

struggling with any addiction, any hurt, any habit or any hang-up.

• The principles are the principles and they work.

• Let’s see how…

Page 25: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

How Does Celebrate Recovery Work?

Page 26: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Solid Foundation:

• Jesus Christ & The Bible • 8 Recovery Principles • 12 Steps and their biblical support • Relationships

Page 27: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Recovery Principles

• There are 8 Recovery Principles that are based on the Beatitudes:

1. Realize I’m not God. I admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and that my life is unmanageable.

“Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor.” (Matthew 5:3)

Page 28: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Recovery Principles 2. Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him,

and that He has the power to help me recover.

“Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)

3. Consciously choose to commit all my life to Christ’s care and control.

“Happy are the meek.” (Matthew 5:5)

Page 29: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Recovery Principles 4. Openly examine and confess my faults to myself, to

God and someone I trust.

“Happy are the pure in heart.” (Matthew 5:8)

5. Voluntarily submit to every change God wants to make in my life and humbly ask Him to remove my character defects.

“Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires.” (Matthew 5:6)

Page 30: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Recovery Principles 6. Evaluate all my relationships. Offer forgiveness to those

who have hurt me and make amends for harm I’ve done to others, except when to do so would harm them or others.

“Happy are the merciful.” (Matthew 5:7) “Happy are the peacemakers.” (Matthew 5:9)

7. Reserve a daily time with God for self-examination, Bible reading and prayer in order to know God and His will for my life and to gain the power to follow His will.

Page 31: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Recovery Principles 8. Yield myself to God to be used to bring this Good

News to others, both by my example and by my words.

“Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires.” (Matthew 5:10)

Twelve Steps: And Their Biblical Support

Step 1: We admitted we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviors. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. (Romans 7:18 NIV)

Step 2: We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose. (Philippians 2:13 NIV)

Page 33: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Twelve Steps: And Their Biblical Support

Step 3: We made a decision to turn our life and will over to the care of God. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. (Romans 12:1 NIV)

Step 4: We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord. (Lamentations 3:40 NIV)

Page 34: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Twelve Steps: And Their Biblical Support

Step 5: We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being, the exact nature of our wrongs. Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. (James 5:16 NIV)

Step 6: We were entirely ready to have God remove all our defects of character. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up. (James 4:10 NIV)

Page 35: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Twelve Steps: And Their Biblical Support

Step 7: We humbly ask Him to remove all our shortcomings. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9 NIV)

Step 8: We made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all. Do to others as you would have them do to you. (Luke 6:31 NIV)

Page 36: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Twelve Steps: And Their Biblical Support

Step 9: We made direct amends to such people whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. (Matthew 5:23-24 NIV)

Step 10: We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it. So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall. (1 Corinthians 10:12 NIV)

Page 37: Celebrate Recovery Brief APNC - APNC – Addiction ... Recovery • Celebrate Recovery is a biblical, balanced and Christ-centered program created to help people overcome their hurts,

Twelve Steps: And Their Biblical Support

Step 11: We sought, through prayer and meditation, to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and power to carry that out. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. (Colossians 3:16 NIV)

Step 12: Having had a spiritual experience as the result of these steps, we pledged to carry this message to others, and practice these principles in all our affairs. Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. (Galatians 6:1 NIV)

The Landing is a unique experience.. It’s structured as an ongoing 52-week program— based on the beatitudes where Jesus laid out principles for happiness in the sermon on the mount—for teenagers who are struggling to live their lives in a healthy, God-honoring way. Maybe they come from a dysfunctional home or have faced crises in their life. Maybe they simply need help developing patterns of wise choices, or they wrestle with an addiction of some kind. Whatever their life story, they know they need something more than a typical Sunday school class or youth group meeting. Or maybe they don’t know this, but the people who love them do. The Landing is a safe, healing place where teenagers can live a freer, healthier, and more God-centered life.
