Gastric Band Surgery

Gastric band surgery, also known as a ‘lap band’, may be suitable if you have a BMI of over 30.

It’s a way of assisting weight loss by stimulating nerve endings at the top of your stomach so that you’re satisfied with smaller portions and therefore eat less.

It’s a keyhole procedure, and less invasive than a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass.

At The Hospital Group, we’ve helped our customers lose as much as 10 stone through gastric band surgery. Many customers have reported health benefits and being able to live a more active lifestyle following gastric band surgery.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery may be suitable if you have a BMI of 40 or over, or less (but no lower than 30), if you have obesity-related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes. It’s a proven form of weight loss when combined with a programme of dietary, exercise and lifestyle changes. The surgery involves the creation of a small stomach pouch and re-routing the small intestine, which helps by restricting food intake, reducing hunger and the absorption of calories and nutrients.

The surgery can help those who struggle with obesity to lose significant amounts of weight. On average 55-70% of excess weight after 3 years (source: NBSR Registry Report 2014). There can also be significant health benefits including controlling Type 2 diabetes and hypertension, improving sleep apnoea, asthma and joint pain.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, may be suitable if you have a BMI of 40 or over, or less (but no lower than 30) if you have obesity-related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes. The surgery reduces the size and capacity of the stomach by about 75% and includes removing the upper part of the stomach where the chemical that stimulates appetite (ghrelin) is produced. This helps to reduce appetite and the ability to eat large portions.

Our customers generally lose weight more rapidly than with a gastric band – losing on average 55 to 60% of excess weight after 3 years (source: National Bariatric Surgery Registry Report 2014). They also experience improvements in health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, asthma, joint pain, arthritis and fatigue, as well as feeling good about life again.

Why and when did you decide to have your treatment/surgery?My confidence was at an all-time low. I’d hit 20 stone and I was only 23. I felt like I was missing out on the things my friends were all enjoying, like getting dressed up to go out and going to theme parks – I was too worried I wouldn’t fit on the rides. Why and when did you decide to have your treatment/surgery?I was fed up one Christmas because of the size I was, and realised that by the next Christmas, I needed to have actually done something about it!

Why did you choose The Hospital Group?I’m quite an impulsive person so after the initial consultation with a surgeon from The Hospital Group I booked my procedure as soon as possible and can honestly say it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.

Gemma Daka’s Gastric Band Story

Why and when did you decide to have your treatment/surgery?I chose to have gastric band in 2015 as my weight was having a major negative impact on my life. I was struggling to breathe and gasping for air just walking upstairs, I couldn’t do up my shoelaces, had anxiety and low self-esteem and I felt so self-conscious whenever I went out that I only went to work and back.

I was a serial failed dieter. I had tried so many diets and had come to the end of my tether. I was tired and exhausted from trying them all. The final straw came at a staff wellbeing day at work. The nurse took my blood pressure and my BMI was so high I wasn’t on the chart. I was so embarrassed and it was then I realised I needed help to get my life back in control.

Greg Smith’s Gastric Band Story

Why and when did you decide to have your treatment/surgery?I first started to think about having a gastric bypass about 3 years ago. With all the health problems I was experiencing it really got me motivated to do something about my weight.

Why did you choose The Hospital Group?I started looking around at a number of different private companies to have my gastric bypass. What difference has weight loss surgery had on your life?The difference to my life is staggering, firstly my health. My slipped disk has gone on its own accord and my back is now 100%. The nerves in my left leg are working again and my doctor tells me I’m fitter than I was 20 years ago which is amazing.

The real difference comes in the day to day things, simple things people take for granted such as tying your shoe laces. This is easy now, virtually impossible before. Another example that affected my confidence was getting in a plane seat when I went on holiday. Nowadays, I actually enjoy flying. I no longer worry if the sunbeds are made of plastic or if the restaurants chairs have arms on them or not. None of these worries cross my mind now and for me is the real result of having the bypass, 100% peace of mind.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about weight loss surgery?It’s not just a magic cure. For the rest of your life you’re giving up the food and drink you love and this can be tough at times. Embrace the journey and stay positive. The result of that will speak for itself. In my case, I have lost 18 stone and I am now running marathons.

Steven Pridmore’s Gastric Bypass Story

Why and when did you decide to have your treatment/surgery?One girl at work, who was a few years older than me at this point (I was 20) had said she lost 8 stone in 2 years and explained she had gastric sleeve surgery. That planted a little seed in my head because at that time I was doing a meal replacement diet which was killing me! I’d always struggled with my weight.

On the day of the surgery I was quite apprehensive,

but the hospital staff were really lovely and did everything they could to comfort me – the service was extremely personal. The procedure didn’t take long, and I was back home after a few days, adjusting to my new lifestyle. It takes a while to get the hang of your new diet but I felt like I had plenty of support.

What difference has weight loss surgery had on your life?I don’t think I’ll ever be able to put into words what the surgery has done for me.
