Celebrate CB 2012 runs Thursdaythrough May 19. The 2012 theme –“CBWon’t You Blow Your Horn” – marksUnion Pacific Railroad’s 150-year historyand applauds the achievements of CouncilBluffs residents.
The week of festivities kicks off at 5p.m. Thursday with opening ceremonies atthe Golden Spike Monument, NinthAvenue and South 21st St. Mayor TomHanafan is set to issue a proclamationdeclaring Celebrate CB week from thesteps of Union Pacific’s historic steam loco-motive No. 844.

Children’s fair is no-cost funDENNIS FRIEND
“We want to give kids the opportu-nity to have fun in the park withoutpaying any money,” Marlys Lien said.
Lien is organizing the annual chil-dren’s fair at Bayliss Park during Cele-
brate CB. To make themost of all that isoffered to kids on Sat-urday, May 19, she sug-gested families watchthe parade, and alsostop by Bayliss Parkfor the carnival rides,food and tons of chil-dren’s activities at theChildren’s ActivitiesFaire under the tent.”
The activities will begin about 12:30p.m. until will continue until 3:30 p.m.,she said, although some events mayhave special starting times or endtimes.
“We have a new event called‘CAPOW!’ It’s from the University ofNebraska at Omaha,” Lien said.
Lien described “CAPOW” as a pre-sentation of chemistry and physics on
wheels. The one-hour demonstrationstarts at 1:30 p.m. in the Children’sActivities tent. She said children canwatch how mixing certain chemicalswill cause them to change colors, foamor go poof, Lien said.
The science display of pops, bangsand flashes “includes excitingoverviews of physics, chemistry andenergy resources,” according to the Cel-ebrate CB website.
Other activities include face paint-ing sponsored by EQ School of Design,and art activities sponsored by BluffsArts Council, New Horizon Church,SAC Federal Credit Union, Family Ser-
vices, SWIAEYC and the Council BluffsPublic Library.
“There are bubbles to blow” at anevent sponsored by FAMILY, and“there are beanbags to toss,” Lien said.Football and ring toss games will besponsored by CB Tackle Football andCB Foundation Kids & Co.
Children will be able to make crafts,including items to be made from recy-clable materials.
Bouncy inflatable activities spon-sored by Romano True Value will befree near the large tent on the south-east corner of the park.
“The Union Pacific Museum willoffer free rides on the Union Pacificmini train. They will load at the frontdoor of the museum,” Lien said.
Children will receive free goodybags, body art, temporary washabletattoos and helium balloons. One bagwill be available per child. Childrenmust be present to get the bag and thebags will be available, while supplieslast.

Children’s Activities Faire detailsThe fun doesn’t end with the last parade float, but will
last well into the night on Saturday, May 19.After the parade, activities – carnival rides, food,
music and more – carry on at Bayliss Park.Children, you’re in luck. Organizers have planned a
slew of fun events for the Children’s Activities Faire, a Cel-ebrate CB tradition.
The festivities are slated to begin about 12:30 p.m.and end at 3:30 p.m., although some events have morespecific start and end times. The fun includes: face paint-ing, art activities, bubbles, bouncing activities, games, sci-ence displays and miniature train rides. Children willreceive free goody bags while supplies last.

All aboard fora big parade
The climax of the annual CelebrateCB week is the downtown parade – thisyear on Saturday, May 19 – that show-cases the musical and artistic talents ofresidents.
This year’s theme is “CB Won’t YouBlow Your Horn,” which not only honorsthe 150th anniversary of the creation ofthe Union Pacific Railroad, but also theamazing things Council Bluffs folkshave achieved over the years. Residentshave responded to honor the railroad,which officially begins in CouncilBluffs, and the community.
“We are at 95 floats,” said WendySchultz, parade co-chair. “Usually, wetry to max it out at 100, so having 95floats should work out well.”
As in the past, the parade begins at10:30 a.m. at Ninth Avenue and MainStreet and heads north connecting withPearl Street all the way to West Broad-way.Then, it comes back on Main Streetto Story Street, where it goes one blockto the east to Fourth Street and backsouth to the beginning point.
The crowd, though, will notice somechanges, Schultz said. The CelebrateCB grand marshal will ride in a smalllocomotive that honors the special U.P.year, she said. And, Mayor TomHanafan and the City Council memberswill ride in horse and carriages, cour-tesy of Cutler O’Neill Funeral Home,
according to Schultz. The mayor willride in the carriage that used to carrythe coffin of the deceased, while thecouncil will ride in the following car-riage that used to carry the grievingfamily members, she said.
As always, there will be plenty ofschool marching bands, vehicles fromthe Police and Fire departments, andfloats from dozens of organizations, shesaid.
“We’ll have more dog and animalentries by pet photographers andgroomers,” Schultz said.
The float-judging stand will be bythe Pearl Street entrance of City Hall.The parade should conclude aroundnoon.
Though active in Celebrate CB in thepast, this was the first year for Schultzto oversee the entire parade details thatshe shares with Stacey Shockey.
Lots of work, yes, but, “I’m havingfun doing it,” Schultz said.

Celebrate CB kicks off withHigh Heel entertaining themasses with a selection of fam-ily-friendly covers.
The band, which plays classicrock, new country, disco andsweet ballads, will perform atthe Celebrate CB street dance,from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday atQuaker Steak & Lube, 3320 MidAmerica Drive. High Heel andthe dance – which dovetails withBBQ in the Bluffs – are amongthe litany of entertainmentoptions throughout the week.
“The barbecuers will be downthere for contest. We’ll do dancein tandem with that,” said LisaBrink, entertainment chair forCelebrate CB. “That should bejust a great time.”
Brink said she was excitedabout entertainment for thisyear’s event. The clean-sweepevent on Tuesday, May 15, willbe followed a viewing of “Char-lotte’s Web” at Bayliss Park. Butbefore the featured film rolls,the finalists of the “Why Council
Bluffs Should be Proud” videocontest will air.
Brink said Union Pacificenlisted area schools to create avideo about city pride.
On Saturday, May 19, theparade rolls through town.
“There are a lot of good floatsthis year,” Brink said. “And wehave so many great activities forfamilies following the parade.”
After the last float goes by,organizers will give away 150free “goodie bags” to children inBayliss Park and 500 UnionPacific coloring books.
Miniature train rides will be
available, along with face paint-ing. Chalk Walk drawings willdot the Bayliss and area side-walks. The winner will beannounced after the parade. TheUniversity of Nebraska atOmaha CAPOW program – ascience learning initiative – willpresent experiments and “reallycool stuff for kids,” at 1:30 p.m.,Brink said.
From 1 to 4 p.m., the CowboyUp! Band will entertain thecrowd with a selection of high-energy country rock songs.
Temporary tattoos and avariety of games and activitieswill be available, along with avariety of food vendors. And thecarnival runs throughout theday and into the night.
Brink said every year Cele-brate CB organizers work tobring on as many organizationsand groups to the project, “tomake the week as strong as itcould be.”
“This year it’s really falleninto place – so many groupsbringing great things to thetable, it’ll be a fantastic week.
This year’s Celebrate CB one ofthe strongest I have had theprivilege to be part of – it really
is inspiring,” she said. “It is justso exciting to see the communitycome together.”

BBQ in the Bluffs and live music detailsThe seventh-annual Barbecue in the Bluffs
takes place Friday and Saturday at QuakerSteak & Lube, 3320 Mid America Drive. KansasCity Barbecue Society-approved judges willjudge contestants. Registration is online at cel-ebratecb.com/bbq-online-registration. SelectBBQ contestants will compete for the annualpeople’s choice award. The public can samplewings and vote for their favorite on Friday. Thecost is $5 per person.
High Heel, an Omaha band known for itsfamily-friendly covers, will perform at the Cele-brate CB street dance, from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday,also at Quaker Steak & Lube.
On Saturday, the Cowboy Up! Band willentertain the crowd at Bayliss Park from 1 to 4p.m.

The festival, with thetheme, “CB Won’t You BlowYour Horn,” will be coupled tothe Union Pacific Railroad’s150th anniversary.
The railroad tie-in seemedlike a natural fit, said CarolHorner, president of CelebrateCB.
“It’s been such a significantpart of our history,” she said.
For the first time ever, theopening ceremony will beThursday at 5 p.m. at theGolden Spike Monument,South 21st Street and NinthAvenue. Mayor Tom Hanafanwill proclaim it Celebrate CBweek from the steps of EngineNo. 844, Union Pacific’s his-toric steam locomotive, andblow the whistle to signal thestart of the festival.
No. 844, often called the“Living Legend,” will be ondisplay at the monumentthrough Sunday. Delivered in1944, it was the last steamlocomotive built for UnionPacific.
Also on display will beUnion Pacific’s PromontoryMuseum Car – a 1962 bag-gage car that has been trans-formed into a travelingmuseum. The railcar houses aminiature version of the“Building America” exhibit setto open Saturday at 10 a.m. atthe Union Pacific RailroadMuseum, 200 Pearl St.
The exhibit, a transforma-tion of the museum’s firstfloor, will feature advancedtechnology, life-like land-scapes and a wealth of arti-facts, said Abby Cape, commu-nity relations coordinator forthe museum.
“Our goal with the exhibitwas to have an immersivedesign that makes people feellike they’re really there,” Capesaid. “Not only are there going
to be more artifacts out, butthere will be interactive fea-tures that will give peoplemore of a hands-on feeling.
“One of our interactiveactivities uses Xbox Kinecttechnology,” she said. “This isgoing to be a cutting-edgeexhibit.”
The special agent exhibitwill feature 55 firearms, shesaid.
“We’re also going to havemany of our signal lanterncollection out,” Cape said.
Union Pacific is sponsoringa video contest in conjunctionwith this year’s celebration,Horner said. Participantswere asked to redo UP’s“Rolling Railroad” promo-tional film. The winning entrywill be shown Tuesday, May15, after Clean Sweep inBayliss Park, she said. Theschool or organization thatsubmitted the winning video
will receive a cash prize.On Saturday, May 19, the
grand marshal of the Cele-brate CB Parade will ride in asmall locomotive, Horner said.Union Pacific will give chil-dren rides in its mini-trainfollowing the parade.
Union Pacific will be thepresenting sponsor of the cele-bration this year, Horner said.Harrah’s/Horseshoe Casino isthe sponsor of BBQ in theBluffs, and Ameristar Casino-Hotel is the presenting spon-sor of the parade, she said. USBank is sponsoring the perfor-mance by High Heels.

Mayor Hanafan and City Council will serve hot dogs,chips and beverages to volunteers in Bayliss following thecleanup (around 7 p.m.). The rain date is Wednesday, also at5:30 p.m.
Submissions for Union Pacific’s “Why Council BluffsShould be Proud” video contest and “Charlotte’s Web” will beaired Tuesday in Bayliss, too.
Chalk WalkParade-goers and artists, wake up early for the third-
annual Chalk Walk on Saturday, May 19, in Bayliss Park.The contest, sponsored by the Council Bluffs Civil Rights
Commission and the Bluffs Arts Council, encourages chil-dren and young adults to express their artistic talents ondowntown sidewalks.
Registration starts at 8 a.m. with the contest beginning at9 a.m. Individuals or groups will be given a square of side-walk to create their masterpieces. The 2012 theme coincideswith the Celebrate CB theme – “Won’t You Blow Your Horn?”
Chalk Walk participants are invited to walk in theparade, which starts at 10:30 a.m., with Spunky the Clown.Winners, who are judged in three categories (kindergartenthrough fourth grade, fifth through eighth grades and ninththrough 12th grades), will be announced after the parade.
