Members’ Message
Mark Stanislawski FUNDING Q & A
Over the last six months, many people have asked me about SOPTV’s funding, specifically our local support and federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting . As of the end of December — halfway through our fiscal year (FY) — we have received $593,780 in local support . With your help and support, we can raise the remaining $505,515 by June 30th to meet our goal .
Many thanks to you for your ongoing support of SOPTV and its local programs and services. If you became a member for the first time recently — thank you for joining. Membership support is so important!
As of this writing (1/11/2018), the federal government is still operating under another Continuing Resolution (CR), which will keep the government funded at roughly last year’s levels through January 19, 2018 . Passage of the CR averts a government shutdown and gives Congress more time to negotiate the final FY 2018 appropriations legislation and presumably a budget deal that would increase the current budget caps on defense and domestic discretionary funding . An agreement on the budget caps is necessary before Congress can determine final FY 2018 funding levels . This is important for SOPTV because roughly 35% of our funding comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting . SOPTV does not receive state funding, unlike most rural public television and public radio stations .
When will we know about funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)? In the past, February traditionally marks the beginning of the appropriations process for the upcoming federal fiscal year, which begins in October . Last year President Trump proposed reducing funding for the CPB to $30M . Fortunately, strong bipartisan support in the Senate and House preserved level funding for CPB at $445M . Funding has been level for the last seven years . For perspective, CPB funding is approximately 1/100 of one percent of the federal budget . It is estimated there are over 1,400 different federal programs that provide grants and contracts to nonprofits .
Many thanks for your continuing support of SOPTV!
