Fireworks, barbeques and parades are all on deck for Fourth of Julycelebrations throughout the North Country, but the event behind allthe flag-waving festivities goes back more than 200 years, to a timewhen freedom from tyrannical rule was still a battle to be won.
On July 4, 1776, thirteen North American colonies became theUnited States of America by adopting the Declaration of
Independence and declaring themselves free from oppressiveBritish rule. But the Declaration was more than just a rebellion
against British-imposed taxes and regulations—it providedan in-depth explanation as to why the colonies would be
better off without unrepresented governance from theiroversea neighbors.
The day after the Declaration of Independence was accepted, JohnAdams wrote to his wife, Abigail: “The second day of July, 1776, willbe the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt tobelieve that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as thegreat anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the dayof deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one endof this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”
Adams missed the mark by two days, but he was right about every-thing else—the Fourth is annually marked with celebration, fromsea to shining sea, and is an important reminder of the birth of ournation.
Honoring the fourthThe Fourth of July is a time for celebration, and remembering

We are in our 23rd year of business in the Adirondacks-A family owned business started by Don & Claire Kingsley. We now serve a large area from Albany to Plattsburgh. We started our business doing primarily residential work & now have expanded to include commercial excavation along with gravel mining, rock crushing & delta dredgings. Our son, Nathan Kingsley, has worked with us from a very young age, and now has taken over a great deal of the heavy excavation, along with meeting clients. Our son-in-law, Jeff Soldato works with us on job planning & bidding, as well as equipment operation.

A full-bodied, round, soft and generous red wine with strong spicy character. The wine is 100% Malbec. Ruby red color, leaning to very dark, intense red showing powerful but elegant fl avors, with plumy and blackberry hits accompanied by wonderful butterscotch fl avors and a slight spiciness that is totally integrated with the subtle notes of vanilla that comes from six months of oak aging.

Si Soave Stella Pinot Grigio
Starborough Sauvignon Blanc Mark West Pinot Noir
Jameson Whiskey 1L Sobieski Vodka 1.75L
The “Si Soave” has a bouquet that exhibits aromas of freshly sliced lime, sea salt, mineral, and wet pavement. On the palate the wine shows quite distinct fl avors or tart grapefruit and salty mineral. It’s a wine with fresh and vibrant acidity that hold an extra touch of texture and strength.
Stella is a crisp Pinot Grigio with good acidity and mineral, as well as tree fruit fl avors, and hints of honey. This wine actually tastes like Pinot Grigio, an enviable achievement given the quantity produced as well as its price. Elegant, clean, citrusy (oranges and ripe apples) notes are followed by a light-bodied white.
Starborough Sauvignon Blanc has layers of citrus and tropical fruit with hints of fresh green characters, which make the wine a true expression of the Marlborough region. Flavors of passion fruit, guava and kiwi layered over a citrus framework culminate in a crisp, approachable palate.
In the mouth there is a lot of juicy, ripe, jammy red and black berry fruits with enough concen-tration to give a perception of sweetness. All that juicy fruit upfront fades into tart, medium acidity and mild dusty tannins that become more prominent in the fi nish. There isn’t a whole lot of fruit in the fi nish, which is a bit disappointing after such a forceful fi rst impres-sion. What there is a lot of, from start to fi nish, is oak, highlighted by a toasty vanilla fl avor.
Jameson Irish whiskey is produced from a mixture of malted and unmalted or “green” Irish barley. The barley is dried in a closed kiln fi red by natural gas, and formerly anthracite coal, to preserve its fl avour. Like most Irish whisky, Jameson is triple distilled for optimum smoothness. The end result is a sweet-tasting whiskey.
This vodka has an aroma that is light and fruity, with no nauseating alcohol found in many of its price contemporaries. The taste is nice and smooth, clean and light, and virtually tasteless with the slightest hints of freshly harvested rye. It fi nishes with a semi-dry fruit in a very short burst that leaves the palate refreshingly clean. This is everything you expect from a good Polish vodka and is fantastic chilled.
