A warm welcome from the team

3Your people. Your city. Let’s celebrate them... let’s Celebrate Aberdeen.

Aberdeen City Council is a proud supporter of Celebrate Aberdeen and as Lord Provost I am delighted that we are working in partnership with its team of volunteers to deliver this popular fun-packed event, which promotes volunteering, community spirit and civic pride in the city.

Launched in 2011, Celebrate Aberdeen burst in to life with the aim of celebrating and supporting the third sector in the Granite City. The colourful event was a great success and brought together more than 3,500 people from 130 third sector organisations to highlight their hard work in a parade down Union Street.Businesswoman Morven Mackenzie is the driving force behind Celebrate Aberdeen and is very proud that the event has gone from strength to strength over the last six years. She said: “It’s amazing to see how far Celebrate Aberdeen has come since it was launched. It was an incredible moment to see so many people on Union Street representing the third sector.“What we had achieved really struck me and seeing how many people had turned out to see the parade made all of the hard work worthwhile.“We knew from that moment that the parade was going to be a regular event.

“So many people come together to make Celebrate Aberdeen a success, it really is quite incredible. Each year we have been touched by the number of people who have wanted to help us out, it really does mean a lot to us and is very much appreciated.” Parades in 2012 and 2013 were also hugely popular. An altered format in 2014 saw performers and community groups take to stages across the city centre to entertain attendees for Celebrate Aberdeen weekend. The parade made a return in 2015 and this year will once again mark the start of a colourful weekend packed full of fun, performers and above all, celebration. The Great Aberdeen Run will also take place over the weekend with Celebrate Aberdeen promising to be bigger and better than ever before.

We are very lucky in Aberdeen because we have a robust third sector, which continues to receive great support from residents, businesses and partners across the city. The advice and assistance these voluntary groups are able to provide is invaluable, however many would find it extremely difficult to continue without the wonderful support from the public. Celebrate Aberdeen is not just an opportunity for us to thank local charities for all they do, but it also provides all the organisations involved with the chance to promote their services. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by volunteers can have a huge impact on the lives of others while helping third sector organisations to meet the needs of their service-users. Almost everyone has some sort of connection to a charity, whether for personal assistance or on behalf of a family member or friend. Every year Celebrate Aberdeen gains in size and popularity and with more than 150 charitable and voluntary organisations due to take part in the parade it offers the ideal opportunity for us all to go along and show

our support, and applaud all that they do for people in the city. As well as the parade along Union Street there are community activity and performances in Union Terrace Gardens and the surrounding area, which showcase some of the best talent Aberdeen has to offer. The City Council’s events team has provided help and advice to the organisers of Celebrate Aberdeen since the first parade in 2011, and has seen the annual celebration become a key date in the city’s event calendar. It’s marvellous to see how Celebrate Aberdeen has continued to develop over the years and has become an award-winning event that highlights all that is great about our city. It’s clear that a key factor in the event’s success is the continued partnership working between the City Council’s events team, the Celebrate Aberdeen volunteers and all the volunteers and supporters who ensure the weekend is so popular. For anyone who hasn’t been involved with Celebrate Aberdeen before, I would urge you to come along and watch the parade and go along to some of the performances over the two days.

It is going to be a very busy weekend for the city as the first-ever Great Aberdeen Run will be held on Sunday, August 27th. Aberdeen will be the place to be so I would encourage you to come along and celebrate all the wonderful people and talent in our great city.

Councillor Barney CrockettLord Provost of Aberdeen

Celebrate Aberdeen in now a key highlight in the Granite City’s civic calendar and our dedicated team of volunteers has been hard at work to finalise plans for 2017.We’ve been planning for the biggest and best event yet and would like to thank everyone who has contributed to making Celebrate Aberdeen the wonderful event it has grown in to.There are so many charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations in Aberdeen, some are very well known but many work tirelessly for little recognition. One of the main aims of Celebrate Aberdeen is to change that and raise the profile of the sector.Charities often help us through our most difficult times and for many there is a

constant struggle for funds to continue to provide their crucial services.Providing a platform for them to make their voices heard is one way to help, and many organisations forge valuable business links from being involved in Celebrate Aberdeen. So many people in Aberdeen benefit from the services of these organisations and this is a great way to say thanks and shine a spotlight on their services. We are developing the parade again this year with the addition of sports groups from around the city.We are also very excited to show off all the

local talent in the city and celebrate all the great things that go on in Aberdeen. There is so much to be proud of in Aberdeen, from our third sector organisations and the people that keep them going – to the talented local performers and groups. As well as the parade there will be performances across the city centre and food and drink in Union Terrace Gardens. So come and join us in the city centre on Saturday, August 26th and Sunday, August 27th and help us Celebrate Aberdeen.

Talented performers take to the stage Performers including the incredible cheerleaders from ACDC, blues band Luna Rising and popular Aberdeen band Winston Smith will take to the stage to entertain the crowds throughout the weekend.Other acts include indie group The Capollos, local ukulele group Aberdeen Ukes, and the ever-popular Rock Choir. They will be joined by a range of entertainers including, Sharon Gill School of Dance, The Silver City Singers and FaR with performances taking place across the city centre.Event organiser Morven Mackenzie, said:

“We are delighted with the line-up for Celebrate Aberdeen this year which will have something for everyone.“So many of our fantastic bands, singers

and entertainers are taking part and we are incredibly grateful for their support. This event couldn’t take place without them all and

we love how they embrace what Celebrate Aberdeen is all about, namely community spirit, volunteering and showcasing the best of what we have to offer.”

Celebrate Aberdeen and be a charitable business Without the support of the local business community Celebrate Aberdeen would not be possible.Private sector backing is already vital to many third sector organisations, but the fact remains that awareness within the corporate sector of the ways businesses and third sector organisations can work together needs to be higher.

The parade was first held in 2011 to raise the profile of Aberdeen’s third sector and all that is achieved by the organisations and volunteers within it. The event exemplified the central role companies play in supporting good causes.

At the outset each charity, volunteer organisation or social enterprise was paired with a corporate sponsor. Many of those relationships are still in place today and this link provides an opportunity for businesses to get to know local charities and perhaps support them as their charity of the year. This is invaluable for less well-known charities, and gives them a chance to build

their profile. The crucial importance of businesses and the third sector working more closely and building strong local partnerships cannot be overestimated. These relationships are a lifeline for charities and help organisations work towards their Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) targets.
