In 2012, the LA Phil’s monumental Mahler Project took the music world by storm. With the same larger-than-life intensity, Dudamel shines new light on Tchaikovsky, conducting the symphonies, tone poems, and more with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and our inspired partner orchestra, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. The festival, which begins in late February 2014, will be enhanced by a range of significant community and education events. The grand finale combines the two orchestras in a spectacular celebration of the Russian master’s rousing music. (pp. 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 19, 22 for subscription concerts; p. 27 for non-subscription concerts with the SBSOV)

With the acclaimed and unprecedented Minimalist Jukebox festival of 2006, the Los Angeles Philharmonic became the first major orchestra to take stock of Minimalism, America’s greatest contribution to classical music and the single most important musical movement of the 20th century and beyond. In April 2014, you’ll hear legendary Minimalist works by the movement’s major stars – Riley, Glass, Reich, Andriessen, Adams – and the next generation of innovators. With an eye on the future as well as on our remarkable past, we celebrate ten years in Walt Disney Concert Hall with festivities worthy of such a milestone. Our Music Directors from this decade each lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic for two weeks to start the season. Esa-Pekka Salonen brings such specialties as Sibelius, Debussy, Bartók, and his own Violin Concerto. Gustavo Dudamel is joined for his first week by Yefim Bronfman, one of the greatest pianists of our era, and then continues his Beethoven concerto cycle with the brilliant Leif Ove Andsnes.

Echoing his participation in the Hall’s debut, Yo-Yo Ma returns for a special Opening Night Concert & Gala (concert tickets on sale to subscribers this summer). All three Creative Chairs for Jazz collaborate on a one-of-a-kind jazz celebration. Salonen will lead the world premiere of Frank Zappa’s complete 200 Motels as part of Green Umbrella. An array of community events and talks will punctuate the festivities.
