What is the Ceilidh Trail?

Thòisich Fèis Rois am prògram soirbheachail againn le Cèilidh air Chuairt ann an Siorrachd Rois ann an 2000. Às dèidh dha mar a shoirbhich leis a’ Chèilidh air Chuairt ann an Siorrachd Rois, thòisich Fèis Rois Cèilidh Nàiseanta air Chuairt airson Alba ann an 2012. Tha am pròiseact seo air a dhol bho neart gu neart bhon uair sin, agus tha e a’ toirt chothroman do luchd-ciùil òga bho air feadh Alba a bhith a’ cluich ann an àiteachan fad is farsaing san dùthaich.

Tha tòrr luchd-ciùil a ghabh pàirt sa Chèilidh air Chuairt aig Fèis Rois a-nis ag obair ann an gnìomhachas ciùil na h-Alba far a bheil iad air cliù nach beag a chosnadh dhaibh fhèin. Nam measg tha Fraya Thomsen, Mairearad Green, Innes White agus Rachel Newton.

Taking place from 16th July to 11th August, the Ceilidh Trail provides visitors to Scotland with the opportunity to experience authentic traditional Scottish music in a wide range of settings. We invite you to come and join us for a ceilidh dance in a village hall, a concert at a historic site, or a performance in one of Scotland’s leading theatres. You will hear beautifully crafted songs in both the Gaelic and Scots languages and lively folk tunes played on fiddles, accordions and other traditional musical instruments. Why not join us in some of Scotland’s finest pubs and restaurants for an informal music session during the peak tourist season in July and August?

Fifteen outstanding young musicians from across Scotland have auditioned for a paid summer job touring on the Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail. These young people are aged between 16 and 25 and many of them are studying at some of the country’s leading music schools, including the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. This project provides a professional development opportunity and a stepping stone between studying and launching a career as a performing artist.

In addition to almost 100 performances in Scotland, the superb young musicians on the Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail have been invited to showcase at Cambridge Folk Festival (August 2nd-5th) and Sidmouth FolkWeek (August 3rd-10th)

Cambridge Folk Festival: 2nd – 5th AugustCambridge Folk Festival, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, is one of the premier music events in Europe and one of the longest running and most famous folk festivals in the world. Held each year since 1965 in the beautiful setting of Cherry Hinton Hall, it attracts around 14,000 people, many of whom return year after year.

Fèis Rois has played a key role in the Scotland at Cambridge showcase for many years with 2018 marking 10 years of this hugely successful partnership.

The Ceilidh Trail musicians representing Fèis Rois at Cambridge in 2018 will take part in the following:

• A Fèis Rois showcase in the Club Tent

• A short appearance in Brian McNeill’s Festival Session on Stage 2

• Leading a late night acoustic session in The Hub Tent

Find full details in the Cambridge Folk festival programme.

www.cambridgelivetrust.co.uk/folk-festival

Festivals and PartnershipsCollaboration is at the heart of all Fèis Rois projects, and the success of The Ceilidh Trail is in no small part down to the many strong relationships we have built since 2000 with festivals, businesses and government agencies.

In 2018, we are delighted to be returning to both the Aberdeen International Festival of Youth Arts and the Tartan Heart Festival at Belladrum. We also continue to develop our work with Scottish Natural Heritage and our Ceilidh Trail musicians will perform at 7 of Scotland’s National Nature Reserves (NNRs).

Some highlights for 2018 include:

• At home in the Highlands: working with our friends at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness to offer local people and visitors the chance to experience high quality traditional music at Under Canvas - a new pop up bar with music on the banks of the River Ness;

• In the UK: we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our partnership with Cambridge Folk Festival;

• In Europe: Fèis Rois has been invited to host a Scottish Pavilion at the acclaimed Festival Interceltique de Lorient where we will showcase emerging artists from Scotland.

Sidmouth Folk Week: 3rd – 10th AugustSidmouth Folk Week is an unmissable week-long seaside celebration of music, dance and song taking place in the beautiful East Devon regency coastal resort.

Held in the first week of August every year, the festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors to over 700 diverse events with broad ‘something for everyone’ appeal.

With an ear to the past and an eye on the future, Sidmouth Folk Week features both established stars and emerging talent during its extensive eight-day programme.
