January 2018 From the President’s Desk Dear Alumni members, Let me first wish you for a happy and prosperous NEW YEAR 2018 It is with great pleasure to share with you our activities during the month of December, 2017.

1. We had two get together meetings this month. CEG-72

Batch celebrated their 45th

reunion on 16.12.2017 at Vivekananda Auditorium. Of the 278 students of the batch, 135 turned up for the meet. Friends had come in from every corner of the globe, from America to Australia. The meeting was addressed by the Dean of CEG Dr.T.V. Geetha and also by me. They had promised to give a sizable donation for the needy students fund.

2. Another reunion was conducted by the 1968 batch on 23.12.2017.

This was their 50th

year Golden

Jubilee meet. The batch meet was conducted at the old X-Hall of the Electrical Department. On our request the Hall was refurbished and repaired giving a new look. It was further named as EDISON X Hall of Guinness 1968. They had invited all the old professors and HOD’s for the meeting. Er.T.K. Balaji Chairman and M.D of Lucas T.V.S. himself attended the inaugural session of the meeting. This batch contributed to all the Departments that existed during the period of their study, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Electronics. They had also provided video conferencing facility for the 68 Department.

It was a great pleasure to participate these get together functions.

3. Steps are being taken to improve the CEGAIN. Five new incubates have been selected and letters were given to them to involve as incubates of CEG. We are arranging Mentors for them to guide them in their task. We hope that they will be able to improve their skill. We expect that they will progress well with the guidance provided by the mentors and the improved facilities will be provided in the centre.

4. Saptham programme was conducted on 15.12.2017. Saptham put up a brilliant dance performance at TAG as a tribute to Smt Balsaraswathi, whose birth centenary is being celebrated this year. Ms Swarnamalya, the noted dancer cum dance historian presided over the function. A video presentation on Balasaraswathi set the mood of the program. The dance programme by our students was superb and enjoyed by all the audience present.

5. AACEG – COSS, Class Of Seventy Six, conducted two mentoring programmes in this month for the Mechanical Engineering Department students.

6. Website sub-committee meeting was conducted and the remaining items in the Website were completed and it is functional now.

7. Under Needy Students Fund scholarships were given to 49 students and further donations are received for the fund.

We hope to do better during the coming year with the active cooperation of our members.

Yours Sincerely, D. VASUDEVAN

MENTORING PROGRAMME FOR THIRD YEAR MECH. STUDENTS

(Organized by COSS (Class of 1976, CEG))

Sundaram Parthasarathy (1976

Mech), EC Member, AACEG First Session on December 20, 2017

The first mentoring session that was attended by Twenty Three Third Year Mechanical Engineering was inaugurated by HOD of the Department, Dr. Mohan on December 20, 2017. Dr. Mohan stressed the need for students to take the mentoring programme seriously as it was a

great initiative taken up by COSS to ensure students get a practical understanding of the various industries and the career opportunities. President AACEG, Er. Vasudevan also addressed the students highlighting that they were fortunate to have the knowledge and experience of COSS engineers.

INAUGURATION OF SESSION BY Dr. MOHAN, HEAD, MECH. ENGG. DEPT.

The first programme had the students involved in a target game at the end of which the organizer, Er. Suresh Kumar explained the outcome, the finer points and the lack of questioning or reasoning by the students. They also realized the need to think differently and not blindly follow the leader. Thereafter, the seven COSS members who were

present gave a brief talk on each of their careers and also how the students could tap into their experiences to get career guidance. The session was appreciated by the students and where willing to take part in all the sessions. Second Session on December 28, 2017

MENTORING SESSION

The second mentoring session for the Third year Mechanical Engineering students was held on December 28, 2017. This session was attended by Twenty Seven students. Ten students were new to the session. The session started with the game called Chinese whispers. The students were split into four teams and each team had a leader who was given a message which he then whispered into the ear of one of his team mates. This person then whispered the message into the ear of the second person in the

team and so on. The last person then wrote on a piece of paper the message as conveyed and as understood by him.

MENTORING SESSION

The students then were made to realize how the information could get distorted as it was transmitted from one person to another. They also understood the critical theme in the message was also lost during

the transmission. The students appreciated this game and its practical impact, especially in an industry environment.

Thereafter, the eight attending COSS members from different career streams related to Mechanical Engineering explained to the students, the opportunities and critical issues in each of their careers.

FORTY FIFTH REUNION OF

1972 BATCH

S.Mahendran (1972 ECE) and 1972 Guindians

PROUD ORGANISING TEAM The fun of going to a reunion is

in seeing the people you were close to years ago and reinvigorating those relationships of the past. On the morning of December 16, 2017, one group of Guindians were actually eager to go to the college. With wide open eyes and eager steps they entered the campus of the College of Engineering, Guindy. This would have been in sharp contrast to their attitude during the five years when they had to attend college. The group in mention were batch-mates of the 1967–’72, five year B.E. degree course, celebrating their Forty Fifth Reunion and Golden Jubilee of their friendship and camaraderie. Of the 278 students of the batch, 135 turned up for the meet. Friends had come in from every corner of the globe, from the Americas to Australia. For this group of 135 members of the 1967 – 72 batch of the College of Engineering, Guindy, it was a time to reminisce about their precious student life, to catch up with long lost friends, to walk through the old corridors; past the labs and workshops and indulge in sheer nostalgia.

A short chronicle of CEG72. This batch celebrated their first reunion, which also was the Silver Jubilee of their graduating from the College, in the year 1997. During the 25 years since leaving college, the batch mates had spread out far and wide, to make a career for themselves. Except for a few, contacts between most batch-mates had been lost. The Silver Jubilee preparations were started 18 months in advance, with monthly meetings at the Alumni Club. What started as a small gathering of just a few slowly increased, with every meeting, as more and more contacts were ferreted? The net result was that 103 friends at tended the grand Silver Jubilee meet, celebrated over two days, in December 1997. The get-together was given added colours by the participation of many spouses and quite a few children, which took the total number of participants to over 200. Thereafter, for the next 20 years, this batch has been celebrating the Annual Get-together every December with family participation, assuredly and unfailingly. This was over and above the bi-monthly meetings at the Alumni Club and other special get-togethers whenever a batch mate, from a distant city or country, landed up in Chennai. This batch has been outstanding in their sense of togetherness. They had a very active yahoo-group, which used to clock, over 50 to 60 messages a day; that has now moved shop to the Whatsapp platform. A change in the media but the same old camaraderie, including all the banter, bickering, leg-pulling and friendly feud.

REFORESTING CEG CAMPUS

Back to the present, on December 16, 2017, they congregated in the good old Vivekananda Auditorium. S. Mahendran, the President and the backbone of this close knit alumni group, spoke to his friends about the past meets and the contributions made to society and the college. A corpus, created during the Silver Jubilee celebration, has grown to over Rs.25 lakhs,. the interest from which is used for scholarships being awarded to deserving students of the college. Also a new building was built for a destitute children’s home near Hosur. These were done without much fanfare and publicity.

T.V. Geetha, Dean, Anna University, spoke to the group and released the souvenir containing the names, ’then and now’ pictures and contact details of all the batch-mates. Geetha informed the gathering that the college will be celebrating the one hundredth year of shifting from Chepauk to Guindy in a couple of years and the two hundred and twenty fifth year of its founding in another two years. She hoped that everyone would contribute for and participate in both those occasions.

COMPETITION FOR LADIES ABOUT

TO START For fourteen of the batch

mates, this was the very first time they were in their alma-mater, since leaving its portals in 1972. They were invited on to the stage to share their experiences of the last 45 years. Each had made a name for himself in his respective field and had interesting anecdotes to relate. For most, they could not remember the dates but could remember many moments. B. Varadharajan had headed the nuclear submarine programme. G. V. Nandagopal who had worked under Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, in the missile programme, had this to say about the great Scientist-Statesman. “As the head of the program Dr. Kalam, would go around the various departments daily and smilingly enquire of each Group ‘Ennappa! What’s happening?’ On rare occasions, when he was upset with the work, he would say the same thing ‘Ennappa! What’s happening?’ Only there would be a slight change in the tone of his voice, which would be obvious to all concerned and they would hasten to rectify whatever that was wrong”. It seems, Dr. Kalam never lost his cool or ever spoke a harsh word to anyone.

Page 9: CEG ALUMNI E NEWS JANUARY 2018€¦ · PROFILE AACEG ELECTION 2016 College of Engineering, Guindy have sent a list of 614 students who have opted to enrol themselves as Life Members

The one hundred and thirty five batch-mates stood shoulder to shoulder as their group photo was taken with the landmark dome and clock tower in the background. Following a sumptuous lunch, some of them went around their beloved campus, remembering all the old familiar landmarks and the change that has since taken place in the campus.

They then planted 50 saplings in the campus. This re-forestation effort is a first by any alumni group of the college. This was a small step in greening the campus, which had seen many a tall tree uprooted in the 2016 November ‘Varda’ cyclone. We hope, other alumni follow our example and increase the tree density in the campus.

Lavish gifts were presented to each batch mate as a memorabilia of this grand event. The entire two day function was organized in a grand manner befitting the occasion. This was made possible by contributions from each and every batch mate including generous donations by a few batch mates.

December 17 was a day of fun and frolic with spouses, children and grandchildren, at a Resort near Thirukazhukundram. A few batch mates and spouses exhibited their skills in organizing and conducting enthralling games, which would have made even professional event managers proud. Five luxury buses were organized for ferrying everyone from the college campus to the resort and back.

Reunion is all about friends, eating, drinking and making merry. To complete that requirement, CEG72 alumni had a fellowship meet on the

18th

December. As somebody said, a

merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance. The spirit of giving

flowed freely. I am reminded of the Long John Silver’s remark- "May be you think we were all a sheet in the wind's eye. But I'll tell you I was sober"

People, sometimes, do find

themselves looking backward, talking to others and to themselves about

those over-the-cliff, fork-in-the-road moments in their lives. I imagine this

is what happened at the forty fifth reunion of CEG 72 Guindians. And because of the reunion, I think, we've

got more energy and enthusiasm than we've ever had.

BASEMENT CIVIL STRUCTURES

S.Ramachandran (1962 Civil) (S.Ramachandran joined as AE in PWD,TN in 1962 and served for 21 years in various capacities. After a brief stint in DOS IN Bangaluru, he joined Best and Crompton as General Manager and served for 15 years. Subsequently from 1999 he is associated with private consultants such as Enkem Engineers and VV Associates).

The concept of arriving and concluding on the basement level of all civil structures, buildings of all types including medical, pharmaceutical, multi-level, flats in the city in different areas like urban, seashore and estates is very important technically, structurally, functionally, aesthetically and on vastu considerations as well.

ELEVEN STOREY BUILDING AT VELACHERY

Page 10: CEG ALUMNI E NEWS JANUARY 2018€¦ · PROFILE AACEG ELECTION 2016 College of Engineering, Guindy have sent a list of 614 students who have opted to enrol themselves as Life Members

The points considered for the

purpose are mainly: The existing camber level of the

main road in front and sides Future possible expansion of the

roads by rise and width Workable approach by ramp to the

structure effect of recent rains Possible flooding and max flood

level Existence of storage tanks in the

vicinity Adjacent structures built and the

storm water drains that have been existing for several years,

The basement constitute parking of vehicles on the basement and pathways around these

Filling in basement with approved earth from foundations

Filling in basement with approved imported earth to be minimum based on cost considerations

With above data and considerations, the basement level of the structures are fixed at about 3ft 6 in to 4ft 6 in above camber of the road in front giving an allowance of 6in to one foot for future expansion and may be another 6in too for practical reasons. Another key point is to have the steps in even numbers of 6in raiser for vastu considerations. In recent years the MSBs are framed structures in the basement floor where the pathways around constitute mostly covered parking and partial parking respectively. The basement slab being cast in situ RCC and pathways with paved blocks. Proper care is to be taken to drain off water to the drains in front and rainwater harvest arrangements. Once the project is complete with the above concepts of fixing the basement level, the effect of rain is reviewed for possible minor rectifications. These are some structures in Chennai that follow the above concept: The 11 level MSB of 60000 sq.ft a framed structure in Ambattur by Awesome Builders

A 3 level building in Kilpauk 4 level Medical building in Sriperumbudur next to Hyundai factory 272 flats by Roma Housing near Poonamallee in 4 blocks Two level office/children’s home in

Coimbatore Temple in VelacheryAll these were all built with basement level on above concepts and their performance is satisfactory.

BECAUSE THEY DON’T CARE!

Sujithra (III Year SAP) The empty feeling that comes from within, The hollowness in you while hiding in the darkness, The howling heart with not even a soul to hark, Reaching out for an arm at the brink of drowning in the dead! Picking up the phone having no one to call. Lying down beneath the moonlight Faking that you finally have her, Someone who would last. Wrists cut, veins opened. Tears fell to the ground falling apart. Still, they don't care! For the clock ticks, the leaves rustle, The world keeps spinning; But just not for YOU! "Get over with it" they say.

I wish I could find a way.

Trust is my biggest fear,

Enough of all the tears!

Yet, I have only myself to blame For letting you in, to BREAK THE BROKEN AGAIN! Thus, a poem to blame myself and the world. A poem to get out the things cramming my head. A poem that no one ever needs to listen. Now, left empty-handed with nothing to do of WHAT IS LEFT!
