Our company was founded on February 4, 1957 by the late Edward J. Altorfer after being introduced to the Caterpillar business by close friend Buck Swords (owner of Peoria Tractor and Equipment Company). In the beginning, Altorfer Machinery Company had locations in Cedar Rapids, IA, Davenport, IA, and Hannibal, MO with around 100 employees. After ten years, Ed expanded into a second business that he named Capitol Machinery Company with locations in Springfield, IL and Champaign, IL.

From there, Ed’s businesses only continued to grow. Altorfer Machinery acquired the lift truck business in 1973, and Capitol Machinery obtained Peoria Tractor and Equipment in 1986. After strong business and steady growth over the late 1980’s and 1990’s, Altorfer Machinery and Capitol Machinery merged into Altorfer Cat on January 1, 1998.

Ed’s family has been a part of this business since 1970 when the first of his sons, Bruce, joined Altorfer. Two of Bruce’s brothers, Jim and Don, joined in 1971. After Ed retired, Bruce was elected to be the company’s second President.

In 2006, Bruce’s son, Derek, began working at Altorfer Cat. In 2012 he was elected vice president of the company and on February 1, 2017, Derek was elected President, thus marking third generation ownership of the company.

In 2018, the Altorfer family was able to expand their business again with the acquisition of Patten Industries, Inc., the Caterpillar® dealer in northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.
