    RESIDENTIAL STAIRWAY AND HANDRAIL REQUIREMENTS

    The following i nformation is based on the 2007 California Bu ilding Code (CBC)

    * The rise and run of steps shall be unif orm in size, shape, and the variation cannotexceed 3/8 inch in the tot al run per CBC Sectio n 1009.3.2.

    * The maximum rise of steps shall b e 7 3/4 inches; the mi nimum tread depth shall be 10inches. The minimum winder tread depth at the walk line shall be 10 inches; and theminimum w inder tread depth shall be 6 inches. A nosin g not less than 3/4 inch b ut notgreater than 1 1/4 inches shall be pro vided on s tairways with soli d risers w here the treaddepth is less than 11 inches per CBC Section 1009.3(4).

    * Stairways shall h ave a minimum headroom clearance of 80 inches m easured verticallyfrom a line connecting the edge of the nosing. Such headroom shall be continuou sabove the stairway to the point where the line intersects the landing below, one treaddepth beyond the bottom r iser. The minimum clearance shall be maintained the full

    width of the stairway and landing per CBC Section 1009.2.

    * The minimum w idth of stairways shall not b e less than 36 inches. The minimumdimension of all land ings shall be 36 inch es per CBC Section s 1009.1(1) and 1009.4.

    * All stairs having four o r more risers are required to have handrails and guardrails thatcomply w ith the CBC Sections 1012 and 1013.

    * All landings , decks, and balconies that are more than 30 inches above gr ade require abuildin g permit and guardrails that compl y with all applicable CBC provisio ns.

    * The mounting o f handrails shall be such th at the completed handrail and sup portingstructu re are capable of withstandin g a load of at least 200 pounds applied in anydirection at any po int alo ng the top of th e rail per CBC Section 1012.1, 1607.7.1(1), and1607.7.1.1.

    * Handrails shall be continuou s the full length o f the stairs, from the top riser to th e bottomper CBC Section 1012.5(1).

    * Handrails are only permitted to be interrupted by a newel post at a landing per CBCSection 1012.4(1).

    * Handrail height, measured above the stair tread nosin g, shall be unif orm, not less than34 inches and not mo re than 38 inches per CBC Section 1012.2.

    * Handrails w ith a circ ular cross -section shall have an outside d iameter of at least 1 1/4inches and no t greater than 2 inches or shall pr ovide equivalent grasp ability. If thehandrail is not c ircular it shall have a perimeter dimension of at least 4 inches and notgreater than 61/4 inches wit h a maximum cross-section dimension of 2 1/4 inches. Edgesshall h ave a minimum radius of 0.01 inch per CBC Sectio n 1012.3.

    * Handrails w ith a circ ular cross -section shall have an outside d iameter of at least 1 1/4inches and no t greater than 2 inches or shall pr ovide equivalent grasp ability. If thehandrail is not c ircular it shall have a perimeter dimension of at least 4 inches and notgreater than 61/4 inches wit h a maximum cross-section dimension of 2 1/4 inches. Edgesshall h ave a minimum radius of 0.01 inch per CBC Sectio n 1012.3.
