sDiscount Oil & Filters – Is There a Performance Difference? With the financial challenges facing many contractors in today’s economic climate, everyone is looking for ways to cut costs or do more with less. While it’s generally accepted by most contractors that consistently changing oil and filters on their fleet is “the cheapest insurance you can buy” for the long-term operating costs of your fleet, some contractors have experimented with discount filters and oil with an eye towards reducing the cost of each oil change. After all, how much difference is there between OEM filter/oil products and cheaper competitive alternatives? As it turns out, there are a number of significant differences that can play a huge role on the life and performance of critical systems on your off-road equipment. According to Bob Boatman, Senior Manager of Parts and Service Support for Titan Machinery “It definitely does [make a difference] – off road oils are designed to operate at a higher percentage of available horsepower and in harsh, dirty conditions. Different applications require different oils”. Bob has over 30 years of experience in both the dealer and manufacturing side of the construction equipment business. Bob added “Off road equipment requires better base oils with a higher TBN (Total Base Number) of detergents and dispersants”. TBN levels are the indicator used to measure the amount of additive package and the balance of ash and zinc. Ash or sulfated ash indicates the additive content of an oil while zinc is the anti-wear additive used to reduce wear between moving parts. Oil engineered for passenger cars would typically have a TBN of 7-8 while heavy-duty trucks with diesel engines have an 8-9 and off-road equipment with diesel engines have a TBN of 10-14. Heavy equipment oil also utilizes TAN (Total Acid Number) to measure and rate the level of protection provided by an oil. A high TAN number represents the potential for accelerated rust, corrosion and oxidation. “TAN increases in service as TBN decreases, the point these two numbers meet indicates your maximum oil change interval”, explains Bob.

After-Market Oil/Filter Under PressureDean Shaw, Titan Machinery Store Manager in Sioux City, Iowa recently had a customer with a Case 850L dozer who suddenly lost oil pressure, flashing a yellow code indicating low oil pressure. “Our customer had accumulated about 100 hours on the machine since doing the first oil change using an after-market 15W-40 oil and filter. Once we got the 850L in to the shop we installed a manual gauge to get pressure readings. At operating temperature low idle was 17psi, high idle was 30 psi, high idle under load was 24 psi. We could find

Filter Failuresnothing wrong with the machine sending unit so the shop decided to drain the engine oil and install a new Case oil filter and Case 15W-40 oil. At operating temperature the oil pressure now registered 24 psi at low idle, 61 psi at high idle and 58 psi at high idle under load. We don’t know if the filter or the oil was the difference but it appears to be one or the other, or both. Either way, it reinforced what our shop technicians have been telling us for years about the importance of using Case oil and filters in our equipment.”

Short-Term Gain, Long-Term PainWhen Denis Buffham, Titan Machinery Service Manager in Great Falls, MT was asked about some of the issues he has seen from discount oils and filters, he listed: “Black smoke, high oil consumption, misfiring, low power, engine knocks and low oil pressure.” Denis also explained that using the wrong oil can cause bore polishing, sticking rings, worn cam lobes, carbon build up and bearing wear. “It’s really important that the oil contain a good base oil with the correct additive package – you wouldn’t put laundry soap in your dishwasher, would you?” Denis also explained that with the new increased intervals between oil changes that the manufactures are recommending it is even more important to be using the correct lubricants and filters. Brent Kober, Missoula parts manager added “My customers have been very loyal to the Case branded products, because we’ve worked hard to make sure everyone understands the importance of using quality lubricants in their machines and they’ve seen the results first-hand”. Proper filtration is just as important “I try to make sure that all of my customers use only high quality APPROVED filters – trying to save money going to a cheaper oil or filter usually ends up costing you more in the long-run,” he continued.

Keep Your Engine Happy and Clean“Competitors can’t compete against our filters” a bold statement from Kelly Oblizajek, CNH Parts and Service Representative, backed up by a number of facts. In the end, saving money by reducing the quality of the oil and filters used on your equipment is not a risk that is worth taking.
