INTRODUCTION

Looking at First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn today, one couldimagine that it has always been here. Its massive simplicity expressed througha battlemented tower 35 feet wide rising 90 feet above Henry Street and itsgreat blocks of brownstone, virtually free of ornament, create a sense ofunshakeable strength and confident tranquility. You can almost hear the strainsof Luther’s great hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”

The building was designed by William B. Olmstead and dedicated in1847. While that was the year “goldbugs” were abandoning everything, tempo-ral and spiritual, for California, local Presbyterian congregants staked theirclaim in a church whose ever deepening roots, from seedlings planted a quartercentury before, were to make it inseparable from its community.

In the third decade of the nineteenth century, with a population close to5,000, and with the distilling of alcohol its most profitable industry, the villageof Brooklyn was about to experience ‘change’ as a third certainty of life. Somevillagers resented the bustle and progress, preferring the old sights and sounds– the Brooklyn of the leather-breeched butchers, tallow candles, street cornerpumps (dispensing questionable water), and swine wandering at will in thestreets. These “traditions” no doubt reassured a few residents. However, aNYC guidebook of the time announced, “You should extricate yourself fromthe narrow, dirty and disagreeable streets of Brooklyn with all possible dis-patch.” Hence the first municipal laws of the City of Brooklyn were enacted:

“Sheep, hogs, and bulls are not permitted to run at large;Landlords must provide sidewalks;Bakers must use ‘wholesome flour’ or risk a ten cents a loaf fine. . .”

But nothing that occurred in the year 1822 was more representaive ofthe awakening energies of the village than was the founding of the First Presby-terian Church of Brooklyn.

1822 From an informal group meeting held in1821 at the Brooklyn Sabbath Union SundaySchool, Ezra Woodhull and nine others (six menand three women) a year later petitioned the NewYork City Presbytery to formally organize the FirstPresbyterian Church of Brooklyn. Our churchbuilding on Cranberry Street was the first churchstructure in Brooklyn Heights.

Joseph Sanford 1823 –1829

The first minister, a PrincetonSeminary graduate, oversaw thebuilding of the church’s tower,the bell of which was also usedas a community fire alarm. Thus,First Church became a naturalcomponent of the growing vil-lage square, and, in Janu-

ary, 1824, sponsored a “Performance of SacredMusic” to benefit the Greeks in their strugglefor independence from the Turks. The concertprogram (see inside back cover) depicts the onlyknown rendering of the Cranberry Street churchfacade. The 120-foot tower was not completeduntil April of the next year, at which time thechurch added a time-keeping mechanism to thesteeple which became the town clock.

Daniel Lynn Carroll 1829 – 1835

Daniel Lynn Carroll, another Princetongraduate, came to First Church early in1829. He had a handsome face with intel-ligence and warmth of feeling, a talent formusic, attractive manners and a fine pul-pit presence, all of which assured his suc-cess in Brooklyn Heights. Temperate andfilled with evangelistic zeal, Carroll in-

creased the church rolls from 340 to 603 members in threeyears. He resigned in 1835 to become the president ofHampden Sydney College.

Dr. Samuel Hanson Cox 1837 – 1854

Since its inception, First Church has tra-ditionally called to its pulpit pastors whowould be remembered not only as spiri-tual leaders but community and nationalleaders as well. One such minister wasDr. Samuel Hanson Cox. He was the firstof the great preachers who made Brook-lyn famous in the 19th century, and he was

one of the most remarkable of them all. A man of impos-ing intellect and extraordinary courage, he assumed the lead-ership of First Church in the very year of the great Presby-terian schism.

American Presbyterianism was in decided dissen-sion regarding various theological disputes, a plan of unionwith the Congregationalists, and the question of slavery.Dr. Cox aligned himself with the more progressive Pres-byterians known nationally as the New School. Through

his ardent and articulate voice, he would becomeknown as “Brooklyn’s first abolitionist.” Among astraiter sect of Presbyterians, who held that salvationwas reserved for a limited company of the elect, hewas regarded with suspicion. Cox held that the atone-ment of Christ knew no bounds, that it was the basisof salvation offered to all men in the preaching of thegospel.

Although a number of Old School adherentsseparated from the church during the schism, the ideaof a congregation splitting and branching was not newto First Church. Many of its own founding membershad come from the Reformed Dutch Church.

In 1844, a number of members of First Churchwithdrew to help found The Church of the Pilgrims.Later, others moved to the new Plymouth Church,which in 1846 bought First Church’s original Cran-berry Street property. Immediately thereafter, FirstChurch, needing to expand, bought property furtherup the hill on Henry Street, its present location.

William Hogarth 1855 – 1858

William Hogarth came to First Church fromthe western New York town of Geneva, in the heart ofthe New School region. He was an able man but hisrivals on The Heights, Henry Ward Beecher of Ply-mouth and Richard Salter Storrs of The Church of thePilgrims, two flamboyant pastors, overshadowed theirneighboring colleagues and his incumbency wasbound to suffer. Bold and constructive leadership waslacking, and Hogarth served as no more than a place-holder. He later became pastor of the Jefferson Av-enue Presbyterian Church of Detroit where he wasnotably successful.

1847 Our present building, FirstPresbyterian Church of Brooklyn,designed by William B. Olmstead,was dedicated.

Charles S. Robinson 1860 – 1868

Due to the enormity of the CivilWar, energies and emotions weredirected away from the normalconcerns of Christian endeavor.But Rev. Robinson did much to re-store First Church’s position ofleadership in The Heights. In 1865Robinson compiled “Songs for the

Sanctuary” which was widely used in American Prot-estant churches.

First Church assumed full responsibility forthe City Park Mission, a Sunday School which hadbeen founded in 1848 for Navy Yard children. In1862, a new building for the Mission was completedand called the City Park Chapel. The Mission wasan affiliate of First Church and thus considered tobe a branch church. The Reverend Charles Wood,the first full-time minister, began his long and de-voted career at the chapel in 1867. First Churchwas solely responsible for the Mission until 1942.

Dr. Norman Seaver 1868 – 1876

This studious, reserved Boston native of ar-tistic tastes was in his mid-thirties when he becamepastor of First Church. That year, the church im-posed a debt of $22,000 for the purchase of a par-sonage. By 1876 the Session was desperate to cutcosts. Because the great Presbyterian schism hadended in 1869, Dr. Seaver proposed to the Sessionthe merger of the two Presbyterian Churches inthe Heights, the First Church on Henry Street andthe Old School First Church of Brooklyn. His pro-posal of such a merger to the Session was met with

silence followed by a swift motion to adjourn. In afarewell sermon that same year, Dr. Seaver notedthat because in the opinion of the Session the churchis not sufficiently advanced by his services, he haddecided to withdraw .

First Church faced the greatest crisis in its 54years. The congregation was dispirited, in debt, dwin-dling in numbers, and out of touch with the com-munity.

Dr. Charles Cuthbert Hall 1877 – 1897

Called to serve was a man whosegifts so matched the challenge thathis arrival, in retrospect, seems di-vinely inspired. Charles CuthbertHall, 26, was warm-hearted and mor-ally stalwart with a refined sense ofstyle and courtesy. He possessed thequalities needed to reinvigorate a dis-

couraged church and restore its once close associa-tion with its neighbors.

If Dr. Hall fit the times, he fit the place aswell. An historian has noted, “Brookyn Heights wasentering the days of its maturity, days of pleasantaffluence, of dignified well-being, assured, compla-cent, the very apex of self-respecting Protestant so-ciety.” Dr. Hall was very much in harmony with hissetting.

In the course of his two decades as pastor,membership would increase by more than 800.Church revenues would grow far beyond anythingpreviously imagined. His ideals guided the gift-giv-ing of parishioners which left us with tangible evi-dence of their generosity and of his spirit. It wasthe great flowering of First Church.

A sanctuary somewhat spartan prior to thistime, now became infused with a subdued rich-ness. Elaborately carved black walnut, fitted infront and behind the pulpit, was installed in 1882.*A gift of $6,500 was made to provide the sub-stantial addition of upper and lower conferencerooms, now known as the Elliott and WoodmanRooms.

In 1882 a new organ was installed at a costof $10,000. Its purchase was no doubt inspiredby Raymond Huntington Woodman, who had be-come organist of the church twoyears before.

He and Dr. Hall sharedthe conviction that only the bestof music was worthy in a placeof public worship. Woodmanestablished one of the most no-table records in the history ofAmerican music. Nineteenyears old when he played his firstanthem at First Church, he was not to retire untilhe was eighty.

After twenty years at First Church, Dr.Hall accepted a call few would have denied him,the presidency of Union Theological Seminary.The Session in its minutes noted that “those whowill come after us might not gather from the recordany proper conception of how his personal min-istrations have endeared him not only to those ofhis own flock but to a multitude throughout thecity who feel his leaving our church a personalloss.”

Dr. L. Mason Clarke 1897 – 1924

The Brooklyn of “then” with itstree-lined streets, old families andquiet good manners, was becom-ing the Brooklyn of “now” — highspeed energy, highly productiveand multiracial. Dr. Clark’s re-sponse to this democratizationwas to help his community evolve

without losing sight of humane values.Early in Dr. Clarke’s pastorate, the church

was freed from all its debts. Several major endow-ment funds were established and gifts to the churchincluded the Bryan Hooker Smith Memorial Build-ing with the minister’s study, the elaborately carvedteak doors and portal of the church, and five morememorial windows. “The River of Life” was the fifthwindow in the sanctuary from the renowned studioof Louis Comfort Tiffany and the richness of itsglowing layers of translucence rank it as the finestin this space. The small river shown in this work isthe the Ausable which flows through theAdirondacks where Mr. and Mrs. Willis Lord Ogden,memorialized in the window, spent their summers.

A sincere and talented preacher with a well-informed inquiring mind, Dr. Clarke consistentlydrew listeners to his pulpit for more than a quarterof a century. His preaching strove to make religionintelligible to every man and woman in the pews,something they could use in dealing with the com-plexities of life. He was also a courageous fighterfor freedom of thought and found intolerable theexclusion of the Unitarian Church of the Saviouron Pierrepont Street from the union services con-

ducted by the local churches on special occasions. Athis urging, the Unitarians were invited to join the circle,permanently.

Dr. Clarke also challenged those within the Pres-byterian Church itself who tried to shackle the Chris-tian spirit. By the end of World War I, many Presbyteri-ans assumed that a liberal interpretation of the Biblehad long since been accepted. They were dismayed anddisheartened to learn otherwise when a militant factionof the national church took up theological arms to pre-serve the faith as they saw it. These were the funda-mentalists who with great zeal fought to drive modern-ists from seminaries and pulpits. The fundamentalistsheld tenaciously to the acceptance of the virgin birth,the resurrection of the body, a rigidly orthodox doctrineof atonement, the infallibility of the Scriptures and aliteral second coming of Christ. They rejected any otherpossible interpretations and forbade any honest differ-ence of opinion.

The most famous of these differences of opin-ions was the Scopes Monkey Trial of1925 which pitted a liberal reading ofGenesis against the teaching ofDarwin’s theory of evolution. The Sun-day after the Presbyterian General As-sembly had voted in favor of the funda-mentalists, the worshippers of FirstChurch assembled in tense expectancyto hear Dr. Clarke’s response. He said:“I charge the assembly with being afraidof the light...with what is perilously nearto blasphemy against the spirit of God

truth.” Squarely, boldly, he had taken the stand forintellectual freedom and his congregation supportedhim.

Ultimately, his thoughts expressed in asimple pamphlet, “Subscription to the Standards,”helped to thwart the ultraconservatives and to healand restore Presbyterianism.

In 1924 Dr. Clarke retired, having met thekind of crisis that reveals the full measure of anyman or woman. He died in 1944 and a tribute bytwo of his fellow ministers described him as “a braveand fearless spirit, who made life more spacious forus all.”

Dr. Morgan Phelps Noyes 1925 – 1932

Dr. Clarke had cleared the way forbroad-gauged, clear-visionedleaders and just such a man wasFirst Church’s next pastor, Mor-gan Phelps Noyes. Theologicallyliberal, Dr. Noyes was a devoutand worshipping Christian, al-ways concerned that prayers and

preaching serve present needs.His conviction was given permanence in his

well-known and widely used book, “Prayers for Ser-vice.” He was noted for preaching that was clear,friendly, helpful and illuminated by a wealth of il-lustrations.

The welfare of the church was his priority.Understanding that outworn customs can hold backthe growth of any institution, Dr. Noyes worked dili-gently to remove restrictive procedures by bringingfresh thinking to the problems he faced.

When Dr. Noyes came to First Church, pews werestill being rented. This system dated from the mid-nine-teenth century when the buying and renting of pews seemeda natural and proper way to fund church needs. But as Dr.Noyes understood it, exclusivity had no place in the wor-ship of God, and pew rentals properly went the way of otheroutgrown customs.

Less successful was his attempt to merge FirstChurch with the Church of the Pilgrims, the church formedby First Church dissidents 85 years before. At the finalmoment of discussions, the Church of the Pilgrims declinedto give up its identity. It was to join another Congregationalbody a few years later, preserving some of its identity in thenew name, “Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims.”

Dr. Noyes’ pastorate was brief but it was an impor-tant one during a critical transitional period. Historian RalphFoster Weld said of him: “A smaller man or a more ambi-tious man might have done much damage.”

Dr. Phillips Elliott 1932 – 1961

Dr. Elliott was destined to be the longestserving pastor of First Church. He camein during the Depression when FranklinRoosevelt was elected president and bythe time Elliott died in 1961, the countryhad fought two wars, inaugurated itsyoungest president, John Kennedy, andachieved its first manned space flight.Within those thirty years, the world had

benefitted from and endured a dizzying series of changesthat touched our lives in every way. All the social problemsof urban American life were felt acutely in Brooklyn, andthey were becoming ever more insistently the problems ofthe church and the concerns of its ministers.

1931 Empire State Building wasopened.

1932 Franklin D. Roosevelt waselected President, and FiorelloLaGuardia was elected mayorof New York City.

1941 Pearl Harbor bombedby Japanese, World War II.

1945 President Roosevelt died.He was the only U. S. President toserve more than two terms.

Dr. Elliott had to meet the needs not onlyof the old brownstoners but also of the less estab-lished younger people of the apartment houses. Hetactfully extended a welcome to lonely young menand women, unobtrusively renewed their faith,gave them friendship and guidance, and sent themforth strengthened and ready to do their share.

In the words of the late beloved AlexBennett, a First Church member for fifty years,and assistant to the current minister, Dr. PaulSmith, Dr. Elliott was “compassionate, a very sym-pathetic man who had a zest for life and a pro-nounced sense of humor.”

In 1948, Dr. Elliott asked Bennett to formsomething other than a young peoples’ fellowship.The result was The Open Heights Fellowshipwhere guests from the United Nations would ar-rive in limousines with their flags flying. Perhapsit was the ambassador from Romania, Germany,Cuba, Iraq or Kenya.

“Mind you,” Bennett said, “in those dayswe didn’t have TV talk shows as a way of learn-ing. We performed a service in those years creat-ing an awarenesss and an understanding of worldevents.”

One of the most self-illuminating com-ments Dr. Elliott would make in his distinguishedcareer was about the church’s strength. “It lies,”he said, “in the fact that it ushers people into anew kind of friendship with others, which, if it isextended and increased, will mean that eventuallyall the world will be bound together in understand-ing and peace.”

1963 200,000 “FreedomMarchers” descended onWashington to demonstrate forracial equality. Several Heightschurches sent busloads ofparticipants.

President John F. Kennedywas assassinated.

James Gordon Gilkey 1962 – 1963

James Gilkey, a graduate of Yale, came toFirst Church from Riverside Church in Manhattanwhere he was one of five ministers. He tried to bringthe aura of a great, large church to First Church, in-troducing high church ceremonies, and attemptingto lead his congregation into the active social fer-ment of the sixties. But the congregation was nowmostly older women and they were less than enthu-siastic about protest marches to City Hall. Whetheror not Rev. Gilkey resigned because he perceived thatthe church could not afford the projects he had pro-posed is uncertain, but his decision to leave so soonwas not as dramatic as his eventually leaving the par-ish ministry.

Lyman B. Stookey 1964 – 1967

Lyman Stookey came to First Church fromDetroit. He attempted to bring the dwindling con-gregation to more religious pursuits by organizingretreats. But he, too, decided the ministry was nothis calling and he left First Church for law school.

The times were turbulent, the congregationsconservative, and the young striving minister couldnot overcome the events.

Dr. Taylor introduced a mix ofquasi-high church ceremony,Presbyterian intellect, source ma-terial from contemporary litera-ture, as well as the Bible for ser-mons that were intelligent, ratherthan emotional, which includedsocial concerns one Sunday each

month. The church became multicultural, includ-ing many ethnic groups, patrician Heights’ familiesand street people. Once again, First Church was atrue community church. Dr. Taylor was instrumen-tal in persuading several Heights’ churches to pro-vide overnight sheltering to the homeless. Manyactivist groups were welcomed to First Churchspace. Dr. Taylor is remembered as a compassion-ate pastor, particularly to the ill and the lonely.

Perhaps the most important contribution tothe community under Dr. Taylor was his ministryof music. Both he and his wife, Judith, had degreesin music. She was both the church organist and itschoir director and had the ability to make a smallchoir sound large and glorious. She brought to thechurch the most splendid musical program sinceRaymond Woodman. It was during the Taylor yearsthat a dedicated bequest enabled the church to pur-chase the Van Zoeren organ.

Leland Gartrell 1984 – 1986

Reverend Gartrell, a professional interimminister, was an intelligent preacher, anexcellent administrator, a caring shepherdand a true friend to every member of thecongregation. He moderated the Sessionwith a firm but guiding hand. Astuteabout money matters, he was able to leada floundering First Church into a stron-

ger financial position. Without his aid at that time, thechurch may have failed.

Dr. Paul Smith 1986 to present

Dr. Smith came to First Church fromHillside Presbyterian Church in Atlanta,Ga. Under his caring and pastoral ad-ministration, high church ceremony hasdisappeared. His sermons have a strongemotional appeal based on his deep com-mitment and his personal experiences offaith. Simply and directly he transfers

his conviction to the congregants.Dr. Smith’s sermons contain word symbols from

different cultures which are echoed by many brilliantly col-ored banners displayed within and without the sanctuary.Spurred by his encouragement, the church music program,emphasizing gospel, has been expanded and refined withprofessional instrumentalists and outstanding voices. Theservice music also encompasses rock, jazz and traditional

hymns, styles which reflect the growing multiculturalmembership and the Presbyterian reform traditionwhich opens the door to new ideas and approacheswithin the congregation. The church has attracted theHallmark Channel which video tapes a service eachmonth for the “America at Worship” program on cabletelevision.

Dr. Smith is strong on outreach not only toour community, but to communities at large where onone occasion in 1997 he preached at the PresbyterianChurch of Southern Africa in Johannesburg, SouthAfrica, for their centenary. His ministry has grown toinclude interfaith outreach to local congregations. Hehas brought sensitivity training to the local police pre-cinct, introduced a lunch program for the homeless,and brought many famous leaders to his pulpit, amongthem The Dalai Lama from Tibet, Ambassador An-drew Young, Arthur Ashe, and the then Speaker ofthe House Tom Foley, all speaking for important so-cial causes. In late summer, 2002, Dr. Smith was se-lected as chaplain for a day in the House of Repre-sentatives.

He is guided by the late Dr. Howard Thurman,his mentor, whose belief and life embraced the phi-losophy of inclusivity. Dr. Smith’s sincerity and reli-gious fervor has brought a new excitement to FirstChurch, the excitement of daily living in the here andnow, and the spiritual excitement of knowing andspeaking with God.
