Technology Overview
CDMA2000 is a 3G code division
multiple-access version of the IMT-
2000 standard which was developed by
the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU) in 2000. The first version of
CDMA2000, known as CDMA1xRTT, was
designed to support mobile data com-
munications at speeds ranging from 144
Kbps to 2 Mbps.
CDMA2000 EV-DO
While CDMA2000 is capable of meeting
the 3G data rate requirement of 2 Mbps,
the EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized)
standard was developed for stationary
applications requiring greater-than-2-
Mbps downlink.

Platform Solutions
The Challenge
Several problems may affect operators
when deploying a CDMA EV-DO net-
work. First, EV-DO requires a separate
radio channel and due to this separa-
tion, system engineers must configure
parameters that optimize data services
in the dedicated RF carrier. Second,
EV-DO has a very different physical
layer from that of IS-2000. As a re-
sult, additional hardware is required to
overlay EV-DO onto an existing IS-2000
system. Finally, the operator must care-
fully optimize CDMA cell distribution in
terms of what is assigned to Data Only
versus what is assigned to a mix of voice
and data. This optimization can be very
complicated.

The Sunrise Telecom Solution
Sunrise Telecom has developed a comprehen-
sive set of non-intrusive analysis and monitor-
ing suites for GSM, GPRS/EDGE, CDMA, UMTS
and IMS/MMD Networks.
In this Application Note we specifically address
the CDMA2000/EVDO Monitoring and Analysis suite.
The current hardware platforms that support CDMA2000
monitoring are:
• 3GMaster® 1000-DX, 6000-QX, and 9000-QX
CDMA2000 Monitoring - Results
The CDMA2000 suite provides a unique set of results in real
time including:
Protocol Trace: all protocol events are decoded as easy-
to-understand mnemonic messages. Frames can also be
viewed in a Graphical format (Arrow Diagram).
CDRs: Call Detail Records provide a complete call summary
including information such as addressing, duration and
reason for disconnection. CDRs are created on all signaling
procedures (A1, A9, A11, etc.), with searching conditions
based on mobile identifiers, procedures status and failure
codes.
CDR-to-Frame function: recovers all of the related sig-
naling frames and shows the entire call flow in graphical
format; while the Frame-to-CDR function automatically
recovers the CDR related to a selected signaling message.
Statistics: a complete set of real time statistics covers all
signaling protocol layers and failure causes. Statistics can
be saved in HTML, XML and Text-ASCII format and exported
to commercial applications.
Charts: every statistic is provided with its own chart. These
can be customized to change their format and be exported
to commercial applications.
Key Features
Multi-protocol & Multi-interface Monitoring
Our platforms are able to perform simultaneous monitoring
of all major interfaces/protocols involved in a CDMA2000
or CDMA2000 EV-DO environment, even if different physi-
cal interfaces are involved.
Correlation
The platforms are also able to automatically correlate CDRs/
TDRs from all interfaces under monitor. A single CDR/TDR is
generated with its own Arrow Diagram so that the User can
see the devices involved and which signaling messages were
exchanged, providing an end-to-end call view.
Real Time Call Trace
This feature allows messages related to a specific call to be
seen by setting the main identifiers such as:
• MIN (Mobile Identification Number)
• IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity)
• MEID (Mobile Equipment Identifier)
• ESN (Electronic Serial Number)
• TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity)
A dedicated real-time trace shows only the frames that
match the call.
A10 GRE Tunneling Support
Concurrent with decoding the signaling messages, our
platforms are able to extract and process the user data (IP
streams) carried over the A10 interface through GRE (Ge-
neric Routing Encapsulation) tunnels. The IP analysis suite
provides statistical analysis on services and connections. The
results are associated with the relative CDR whether mobile
devices are using either a simple or a mobile IP.

Audio Monitoring
This function allows both listening and storing of the voice
signal in .wav files. Audio files are linked to the CDR and can
be played with Media Player. The supported codecs for audio
are: ITU G.711, G.729, G729a and G.723.1.
Analysis and Troubleshooting Tools
Filters: are available for both Trace and CDRs. The User can
filter the captured data based on any of the protocol ele-
ments.
