Bridging Perspectives and Opportunities

LSE SU China Development Society (CDS) was founded in 2002, with a strong initiative to promote global understanding of China, predominantly economically, but also politically and socially. As the only LSE SU society that offers events designed to give comprehensive and in-depth analysis of current issues surrounding China, we have quickly established ourselves on the campus and rapidly built up our membership base to over 1000 members.

After several years of organic growth, owing to the dedication of every management committee, we have evolved into a well-respected organisation with a clear purpose to Bridge Perspectives and Opportunities. In the process, we have forged collaborative links with a multitude of well-respected organisations including LSE Asia Research Centre, LSE Confucius Institute for Business, LSE Department of Economics, the 48 Group Club and the China Britain Business Council.

At the society, our greatest emphasis has been placed on organising top quality public lectures, corporate presentations, large scale conferences and networking sessions in a committed drive to provide all our members with opportunities, experiences and insights that cannot be extracted from classrooms. Our goal is to empower talented people, nurturing leaders of tomorrow and become one of the most influential China-related student groups in the UK. We hope through our effort, we can encourage the free intellectual exploration of difficult issues surrounding China and prepare those who wish to contribute to China’s development for the challenges lying ahead.

The LSE China Development Forum (CDF)is a prestigious annual conference organized by the LSE China Development Society in the aim of creating a platform for students, academics and professionals to exchange opinions on critical subjects related to China, bridging China and the rest of the world through in-depth discussions and debates, and serving the interest of our forum attendants by providing a range of learning, networking and career opportunities that connects global experts with future leaders.

When China Development Forum made its debut in January, 2009 as the first China-themed forum in London run by students, it was a great success joined by many high profile professors and experts from China, Europe and the US. In February, 2010, the second forum China: A Changing Role focused on generating new perspectives on China’s role in the global economy as it is transforming into a world-class economic power and further addressed more economic, political and social factors that are shaping China today.

LSE China Development Forum 2011 is jointly organized by the LSE Asia Research Centre and the LSE China Development Society with collaborative assistance from the Confucius Institute for Business and the 48 Group Club. The LSE Asia Research Centre is one of the most prestigious research groups focusing on Asia worldwide and one of LSE’s primary think tanks. LSE China Development Society, the initiator of the CDF franchise is a premier student organization that aims to promote a global and in-depth understanding of China’s economic and social development.

LSE China Development Forum 2011 – “China’s Global Integration” addressed issues arising from China’s increasing international responsibilities and involvement. This year, we have seen attacks on China’s foreign currency policy, China’s economy surpassing that of Japan, the debacle arising in Copenhagen climate summit, China’s strained relationship with South Asia and many other interesting spectacles, thus an examination on the possible shifts in paradigm of China’s interaction with the world

AsiaResearch Centre

LSE Asia Research CentreLSE Asia Research CentreLSE has had an active engagement with Asia since its inception. The Webbs, founders of LSE, went on a tour of the world, including India, in 1898. They travelled through Asia again in 1911-12, visiting Japan, Korea, China, Malaya, Burma and India.

The Asia Research Centre was established at the LSE in 1997. LSE has always pursued its objectives to understand and improve society through impartial study, on a global basis. The current and future importance of Asia with regard to the challenges and opportunities facing humanity in the 21st Century cannot be overstated.

The Centre was conceived by two former Directors of the School, Dr John Ashworth and Dr IG Patel in recognition of the growing engagement between LSE and Asia. Professor Michael Leifer was the first Director and the Asia Research Centre is currently chaired by Professor Lord Stern, who was also involved with the Centre's creation. Sir Howard Davies, Director of LSE, is actively involved with China and the Chinese banking system.

The key role of the Asia Research Centre is to be a central hub of the LSE to foster Asia related research and activities across the School. The Centre is inter-disciplinary and facilitates collaborative research between academics across the LSE with partners in Asia and beyond. The Centre works in developing and promoting intellectual engagement between academics, policy makers and businesses with an interest in Asia.
