CDAE Honors

“In five short years, Helen has accomplished so much for UVM, Vermont agriculture and furthering the regional food system model of entrepreneurship.”

It was in this way that Jane Kolodinsky concluded her nomination of Helen Labun Jordan for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences New Achiever Alumni Award. But Kolodinsky wasn’t the only person to applaud Jordan’s focused work in recent years.

While a graduate student in CDAE, Jordan worked with the Center for Rural Studies and since graduation, Jordan worked with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets. In this capacity, she was instrumental in strengthening the ties between Vermont’s food system and economically-viable Vermont communities.

Jordan recently accepted the position of program director of e-Vermont, a two-year Community Broadband Project to help rural towns leverage the Internet to address various local needs. It is no doubt that she will continue to do great work for Vermont.

By Kelly Hamshaw, CDAE-CUPS LiaisonAs we celebrate the end of this academic year, it is a great opportunity to reflect on the commitment to community engagement that CDAE students and faculty have continued to grow. CDAE students and faculty partnered with over 30 different local and international community partners through nine designated service-learning courses in Spring 2010. Progress has continued on the CDAE Engaged Department Initiative. This work first began in 2009 with a survey assessing levels of community engagement through teaching, research, and service activities of CDAE faculty in Vermont and beyond. As part of an on-going collaboration with the Office of Community-University Partnerships and Service-Learning, I have developed curriculum maps for each of the three CDAE majors. After collecting and compiling many syllabi, these maps have led to department-wide conversations about the key skills and experiences in each of the majors. >>Read a summary of Spring 2010 S-L courses and preview Fall’s offerings off of the CDAE or MPA websites.

Profs. Bob Parsons and Qingbin Wang Earn Tenure

S-L and Engaged Department Initiative Update

The service learning and community-based research partnership between CDAE and the Mobile Home Project at the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity received the Vermont Campus Compact Exemplary Campus-Community Partnership Award on April 14 at the Compact’s Statewide Recognition Reception Ceremony. The Award highlights a model partnership characterized by “rich and meaningful re-lationships that has enriched the outcomes for both campus and community in a number of ways and over a number of months or years.” Since 2006, this partnership has engaged more than 140 students in under-standing the issues affecting mobile home park communities in Addison and Chittenden counties.

Assistant to Associate to Full Professor. Congratulations to Professors Bob Parsons (photo A) and Qingbin Wang (photo B) who have earned tenure at the University of Vermont. “Drs. Parsons and Wang have achieved the highest level University faculty aspire to. And, they have excelled in all the areas the count: a love of teaching and student mentorship, stellar records of scholarship, and service to the University and beyond,” says Department Chair Jane Kolodinsky on their achievement.
