~es challenging experience acc:n:ca:::::r :o Dr. Harold T. Brinson. He has~ at the helm of SAU since 1976.

Dr. Brinson said the greatest pleas _ is seeing the progress students make they go from that first freshman semes..,.. to graduation.

I get a vicarious feeling, sort of li.kie. surrogate parent, when the studen:s -well," he said. "I also enjoy working v.-ruJ the faculty and staff. We've got 2::1

outstanding group of people workn:::: here.' '

Dr. Brinson said he likes to visit , · students and faculty . One of his favori.:.e times is the annual Colorado ski trip b January. He said it enables him .o become better acquainted with the students in a more relaxed atmosphere.

As a part of his job, Dr. Brinson spends a great deal of time traveling.

"I'm on the road a lot trying to promore SAU to contributors, legislators, and others who help us secure funding," be said. "We always could use more money and that 's always a struggle we face .

As for the future , Dr. Brinson said he would like to see SAU's endowments reach the 10 million dollar mark in the next ten years. The total endowment is presently about 3.9 million dollars.

" If we could triple that in ten years, I'd really be pleased," he said.

Dr. Brinson is married to the former Gene Lee, who he met when they were both students at Magnolia A & M (now SAU). The Brinsons have three children , Kathy, Max, and Paul.

Dr. Brinson is a graduate of DeQueen High School, Magnolia A & M, Tulane University, and University of Texas. Before coming to SAU he was superintendent of schools at the Abilene, Texas Independent School District.

" I know that as a unit we are working together ·· faculty , staff, and students ·· to make things happen at SAU," Dr. Brinson said in conclusion.

The Medical Science Biology Club of Southern Arkansas University is under the direction of Dr. Hugh Johnson, professor of genetics and microbiology. Club members share common ioterests in the biological sciences and having fun. Each year biology club students work toward many individual projects each directed toward the enjoyment of the annual Biology Club Spring Roadtrip, quickly becoming an SAU institution. Following last year's Houston trip, a Spring Break trip was planned for this year to Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C. While in Boston, students visited M.LT., the alma mater of retired SAU biology professor Marie King, an avid biology club sponsor. Since many club members are pre-professional people, the biology club facilitates their biological studies and often aids in placement to various healthrelated professional schools throughout the nation by helping students promote thir individuality as well as their studies.

The Bray, SAU's weekly newspaper, serves the college community and provides training and viable leadership experience for many future journalists.

Students involved in the area of communication should consider positions on the newspaper staff as a way of earning salaries and acquiring meaningful entries for job resumes.

Baptist Student Union

The Baptist Student Union at SAU is a fellowship of students dedicated to promoting the cause of the Christian faith both on campus and beyond. Through activities such as noon worship , Bible studies, mission trips , intramurals, and ministry projects , students are encouraged in their faith and challenged in their commitment to Jesus Christ.

The BSU has a rich heritage at SAU. Over 50 years ago a group of SAU (then A and M) students joined together to form what was later to be known as the Baptist Student Union. For over 25 years, the Baptist Student Union , located across from the Greek Theater at the intersection of University and East Lane, has served as a place of relaxation for students, a headquarters for the BSU, and a meeting place for many BSU activities.

The Baptist Student Union is led by Robert Turner, Director, and Shobie Jones, Outreach Coordinator. Maretta Brown serves as the BSU Secretary.

Church of Christ Student Center

The Fall Semester of the 1986-87 school year marks the 15th Anniversary of service to the SAU campus by the CCSC. The Center is available for students to get away from school work and relax playing ping-pong, watching T.V. , or visiting with friends.

The CCSC is more than a place to relax. The Center means people and activities. The students go on trips , retreats, and help people in the community. Weekly activities include suppers on Sunday evenings, a Wednesday fellowship at 7 p.m., and special Bible studies on Thursdays.

Any students who are interested in the fellowship and fun are invited to attend.

Wesley Foundation

Since 1957, the Wesley Foundation has been a part of SAU's campus. Serving as an extension of the United Methodist Church, the Wesley provides a Christian atmosphere for students to come to for relaxation, study, and fellowship. To implement this, the Wesley building houses a kitchen, small library or study room, a living room with color TV and VCR, restrooms, local phone, and a fellowship hall with ping pong and pool table. A half basketball court is on the west end of the building. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are especially fun at the Wesley when lunch is served and Bible study takes place, respectively. Brother Joe Arnold , director, invites everyone to attend!
