Political Human Rights Heroes

The history of the pro-life struggle in Canada is replete with outstand-ing people who have spoken clearly, taken tough stands and fought

valiantly for the right to life of the unborn and others in peril because of crass policies that do not respect the dignity of the human person nor their inalienable right to life. In this edition of our Agenda for Life we take the opportunity to highlight the work of two public servants who have been honoured with Campaign Life Coalition’s Joseph P. Borowski Award for their outstanding efforts in Parliament in defence of human life and protec-tion of the innocent unborn.

Dr. Stanley HaidaszFollowing the legalization of abortion by the passage of the infamous Omnibus Bill of 1969 Dr. Stanley Haidasz was among the fi rst politicians to initiate legislative ef-forts to enshrine the unborn child’s right to life in Canadian law. Dr. Haidasz, a Liberal Member of Parliament for Parkdale served in the House of Commons for nearly a half-century (1957-1958 and 1962-1978). In 1978 he was appointed to the Senate from which he retired in 1998 at the age of 75. All through his political service he continued

to practice medicine on weekends. His wife, Natalia, said: “He had many patients, especially older generation of immigrants, who would only see him because he spoke in Polish.”

It was his compassion for people in need that inspired him to go into medicine and then into politics. In his own handwritten note Dr. Haidasz re-corded that he “entered politics to legislate medicare for all Canadians.”

Dr. Haidasz was the fi rst Minister of State for Multiculturalism. As Sena-tor, he appealed to the Canadian government to speak out against martial law in Poland, in support of the Solidarity movement. He was active in the Polish community, serving as vice-president and president of the Canadian Polish Congress.

In his long Parliamentary career he played key roles in the passing of several Liberal bills concerning medicare, Unemployment Insurance, the Old Age Supplement, the creation of Petro-Canada, abolition of the death

InstructionsHeat oven to 325°. Cover potatoes with salted cold water by 2 inches in a large saucepan and simmer uncovered until just tender, about 20 minutes. Drain in a colander and cool slightly. While potatoes are simmering, cover chestnuts and bay leaf with salted cold water by 2 inches and simmer until tender, about 5 minutes. Drain in a colander and cool slightly. When potatoes are just cool enough to handle, peel and cut into 1½-inch pieces. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large ovenproof nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add chestnuts and potatoes. Cook, stirring occasionally, until golden, about 5 minutes. Stir in vinegar and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Transfer chestnuts and potatoes to a bowl. Wipe skillet dry. Pound pepper-corns with a pestle until roughly cracked. Sprinkle cracked pepper over pork chops and season with salt.

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in skillet over medium heat until hot but not smok-ing. Add 2 pork chops, and half of the sage, rosemary and cloves. Cook, turning pork chops once, until meat is browned on both sides, about 8 minutes total. Transfer chops to a plate and repeat with remaining ingredients, adding more oil, if necessary; return chops to pan. Drizzle honey over chops, and scatter chestnuts and potatoes around pan. Transfer skillet to oven and bake until chops are cooked through, 5 to 7 minutes. Serve warm.

Ingredients1 pound medium Yukon gold potatoes Salt 1 cup roasted, shelled and skinned chestnuts (½ pound in shell or

about 1 (7½-ounce) jar peeled whole) 1 bay leaf 2-3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar Freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns 4 (1¼-inch-thick) bone-in pork chops (about 3½ pounds total)
