Q.1 A) Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below. (8)

Inglis was stuck in an ice cave with fellow mountaineer Philip Doole - with

five cookies between them, the duo survived on half a biscuit a day for the

first five days. "At minus 20 degrees in that altitude, the human body tends to

burn as many calories as a racing cyclist," says Inglis, whose weight dropped

from 70 kg. to 39 kg. "The maximum someone had lasted in' our situation was

nine days. We spent most of our time praying for relief". It came on the seventh

day in the form of a helicopter which dropped food, sleeping bags, a primus and a

radio. On the thirteenth day, they were rescued. "But the worst was seeing my legs

rot later," Inglis says.

1) Name the fellow mountaineer of Inglis. (1)

2) What difficulties did Inglis and his fellow mountaineer face when they got stuck (2)

in the ice cave ?

3) What qualities of Mark Inglis do you come across in the passage ? Explain. (2)

4) Do as directed: (2)

i) "At minus 20 degrees in that altitude, the human body tends to burn as many

calories as a racing cyclist", says Inglis. (Change into indirect speech)

ii) We spent most of our time praying for relief. (Add a question tag)

5) Locate and write down words from the passage which mean - (1)

i) height above Sea Level

ii) Small cooker or stove

B) Do as directed :

1) He gives excuses. (Rewrite using 'often')

2) They (Iearn) English for last 5 years.

(Rewrite using the proper present tense form of the verb in brackets)

3) Taj Mahal is one of most wonderful creations.

(Use proper articles in the blanks if required)

4) Gopal gave me the advice. He is my mentor.

Q.2 A) Read the following extract and answer the questions given below. (8)

Start where you stand and never mind the past,

The past won't help you in beginning new,

If you have left it all behind at last

Why, that's enough, you're done with it, you're through;

This is another chapter in the book,

This is another race that you have planned,

Don't give the vanished days a backward look,

Start where you stand.

The world won't care about your old defeats

If you can start a new and win successes;

The future is your time, and time is fleet

And there is much of work and strain and stress;

Forget the buried woes and dead despairs,

Here is a brand-new trial right at hand,

The future is for him who does and dares,

Start where you stand.

1) What is said to be not helping you in beginning new? (1)

2) How does one come out of old defeats ? Explain. (2)

3) The poet says, "The future is for him who does and dares". Do you agree (2)

with this ? Why ?
