T he White Oak Presbyterian Church on Gordon Rd.

recently had another one of their popular Barbecue

and Stew sales. My wife and I, knowing how good it

is, bought enough to put in the freezer for later enjoyment. It

also gave us a chance to say hello to some people we don’t see

often enough. The White Oak members seem to be salt of the

earth folks in a community of friendly families.

And it’s true that most churches enjoy sharing good food at their functions – it’s a “Southern

Thing”. But even in the South, this “church food” seems to be somewhat denomination-

ally specific. Perhaps their “palates” are trained by some culinary doctrine handed down

through the generations. For example, the Southern Baptists will serve fried chicken ev-

ery chance they get along with iced tea half full of sugar, with banana pudding for dessert.

(Makes me hungry while I am typing.) The in-town churches serve theirs in a fellowship hall

and the country churches call it “Dinner on the Grounds”

My good friends at the local Catholic Church have a big fundraiser at least once a year where

they serve some fantastic seafood along with draft beer. The fish and seafood they prepare is

delicious and is a favorite of many Newnan folks, including me. Now the Episcopalians will

probably go by and pick up servings from White Oak, blend it, put it on fancy toast points,

call it a paté, serve it on a silver tray, and pair it with an appropriate glass of wine.

My acquaintances at the Methodist Church

are not sure if their taste buds lean toward

a Baptist or a Catholic flavor, so they may

serve some great tasting chicken but will

probably bake it. And they’ll serve it with

“lightly sweetened” tea along with a fresh

salad. The non-denominational churches

I have visited just say “Bring anything you

like - a little of this and a little of that”. And

I have friends of the Lutheran persuasion.

As they have slightly less of a presence in

the community, they may want to visit the

nearest Episcopal Church to see what they

are serving.

I have personally attended all these “brands”

of churches and have seen some differences in how they worship and what they eat or drink.

But we all share one very important thing in common: we are there to honor and worship

God. And this is one time that “Style” doesn’t matter.

JoePost Script: I don’t think my Jewish friends here in town would want to serve pork. But

if they are in the neighborhood of White Oak Church the day they are serving barbecue

outside, they can just let down their car window, take in a deep breath of that aroma and

pretend, just for a moment, that they are Presbyterians.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do,

do all to the glory of God.1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

The ArmchairGardener

Tending“Our”

GardenThe world is our garden. We are its beneficiaries and its caretakers. We may use it

freely as long as we take care of it. We will only be able to stay on this earth as long as it is sustainable. Clean air, clean water and good soil are gifts from our Creator. We have allowed that air to be clouded with pollution; that soil to be contaminated; that water to be poisoned. Birds, animals, insects and amphibians are suffering – even becoming extinct.

It is our sacred duty to protect and tend our garden – this earth. Damaged eco-systems, extinct species and uninhabitable places have been our legacy to the gen-erations to come. Areas of Russia, and now Japan, are examples. Marshes being destroyed, along with wetlands and wildlife habitat, are other examples in America. Strip mining has poisoned our water and destroyed our mountains. Deforestation is a serious problem in many countries.

We must accept responsibility for making this earth – and especially our little piece of it – viable and habitable again for all creatures. Sustainable agriculture needs to become one of our top priorities. We can support farms, farming responsi-bly, and organic products. Diversity, organic gardening, composting, using worms and worm castings, recycling, and free-range animals – ethically treated, are some of the parts of this plan to tend our garden - Earth.

It’s important to support political legislation to protect our garden. Water conser-vation and protection have never been more important than they are now. Protec-tion from toxic pesticides, insecticides and herbicides is also an emergency issue. One third of American honeybees have suffered colony collapse disorder; yet bees are responsible for 25% of all food crops being pollinated. We want to create hope and a future, not a world of darkness and destruction, as our legacy. Let’s all tend our garden faithfully.

At a time when Georgia was truly the Peach State, Coweta County was one of the leading peach producing counties in the state. My grandfather, Henry Camp, had a large peach orchard on his farm near Moreland. He shipped peaches by rail to Chicago. As a small boy I remember how the whole family and other people from the commu-nity would work in the peach packing shed. They were fi lling bushel baskets with Elberta peaches to be loaded on railroad cars in Moreland. Sadly, this annual peach culture completely vanished from Coweta County in the early 1950’s.

Our farm used a Case DO orchard tractor to work the peaches. The DO tractor was low to the ground and had extra sheet metal to protect the driver from the peach limbs and the limbs from the tractor.

Orchard tractors are rare now because few were produced. They were used only in orchards from

A “Peach” of a Tractor1950 Case Orchard Tractor

by Jack Camp

the apple orchards of Michigan to the citrus groves of Florida. I wanted one because of my memories of the peach seasons on our farm. Finding one with the sheet metal intact is almost impossible. Not only were few produced but they had a hard life. They were used to pull sprayers and the spray would cause the metal to rust out. Further when a farmer had to remove and replace the sheet metal a time or two, it was just left off.

My tractor is a 1950 Case Model DO made by the J. I. Case Manufacturing Company. I put it togeth-er from parts found in the Virginia apple orchards, the Florida Citrus groves, as well as the peach growing areas of Georgia. I am proud of it because it is part of our history here in Coweta County.

Publisher’s Note: As I have an interest in old tractors, I asked Jack how the process went with his project. “I found a fellow in Lanett, AL who helped with most of the real mechanic work, although I learned a lot along the way”, he reported. “I sourced the parts we needed by visiting old tractor junk yards and searching on-line. These old tractors were built to last forever and were simply designed so that even someone like me could understand how it works. But when we had worked, on and off, for about fi ve years, and put on the fi nal coat of paint, we were both as proud as could be!” Jack also told me that one of the best aspects of the hobby is the fi ne people you meet - most having grown up on farms and have many interesting stories to tell about these old tractors. I had a chance to see this beautifully restored, 63 year old, Case orchard tractor at this year’s Turin Tractor Show. He certainly has a right to be proud.

Gary SikesWith the middle of the 2013 Fall football campaign just past, our 3 local teams are trying to get be er with each play. At the rst of the season a team can get by with ge ing be er each week.

However, now is the time that they have to get be er with each play. Whether on the practice eld, in the weight room or on gameday, improve-ment is a must.

Northgate head coach Tommy Wal-bern is a rm believer in this theory and stresses it to his players daily on a year round basis. at is one of the main rea-sons that with this being his 4th year as the head man for the Vikings he is look-ing at a good chance to make in into the post season and the state championship games. Walbern, a seasoned veteran, has compiled the best the Vikings have seen since Ron Beaucham started the program several years ago. e Vikings coach is quick to tell you that one of the coaches he looks up to more than most, and tries to pa ern his o ense and coaching style a er is the former Indian coach Danny Cronic. Cronic being one of the winingest coaches in GHSA dur-ing his tenure. e former EC head man is playing his inaugural season at Rine-hart college where he holds a record of 4 wins vs only 2 losses. e college recruited Cronic a er he had retired, to come North and start a program for them. A er a few months of back and forth Danny agreed if they would let

him bring his coaches with him. is be-ing ok, he made (in my opinion a wise choice) the decision to take his older son Drew with him as his o ensive coordina-tor and receivers coach which is what the younger Cronic was at Furman.

In closing let me remind everybody that this Friday evening is homecoming for the Indians game time 7:30 at Sho-make stadium.

Another important automotive uid that you should learn how to check yourself is the coolant in your radiator. Some cars have had air cooled engines (the most famous being the original Volkswagen Beetle) but now the vast majority of vehicles use water cooled systems. Coolant needs to be checked much less frequently, maybe three or four times a year unless you have problems. Actually, it’s not just water and it’s not just in your radia-tor. e engine cooling system is designed to move the heat generated from friction and combustion inside the engine to where its temperature can be reduced and then send it back into the engine to repeat the heating extracting process. An engine driven water pump pushes the coolant through passages inside the engine block, where it absorbs heat, then through rubber hoses to the ra-diator. Cooler air from outside the car passes through the grille, then through the radiator, reducing the temperature of the hot coolant that just came out of the engine, and then pumping the cooler liquid back through the engine where it goes through the cycle all over again.

Water by itself does not transfer heat very well, so additives are used to improve its ef- ciency. at’s why the proper term is “cool-ant”, not water, because it consists of more than just water. You can put pure water in the cooling system and it will work under most conditions, but could lead to problems in extreme conditions like high ambient temperatures like we see in July in Georgia or in thin air at high elevations. We have all heard of anti-freeze and what its purpose is. It prevents the water from freezing in winter, right? at’s true, but antifreeze also con-tains many other chemicals that prevent rust and corrosion inside the radiator and engine, lubricate the water pump, and enhance the slickness and ow of the water.

Just like with engine oil, your vehicle needs just the right amount of coolant, not too li le or not too much, and it needs just the right kind. So, a concerned and prudent car owner will understand enough about cooling system maintenance to be able to at least check the condition and amount of coolant in order to protect their big invest-ment in the vehicle. e cooling system also works be er when the entire system is under pressure. at’s what the radiator cap does, increases and maintains the pressure created by the water pump inside the cooling sys-tem. A radiator cap rated at 15 PSI maintains the water pressure inside the system at 15 pounds per square inch. One of the most im-

CAR CARE ESSENTIALSEngine Coolant (part 1)

portant things to know when checking your coolant level is to check it with the engine turned o and cool. Otherwise, if you open the radiator cap when the coolant is hot and under pressure, it releases the hot coolant at 15 PSI all over you, it will burn you, it will make a mess of your clothes, and it will ruin your day. Please read that sentence again.

e two important things about coolant are that you have enough and that the ratio of water to antifreeze is enough to protect the coolant from freezing. Also, it’s a good thing to check before a vacation trip, north or south. Anything that’s more involved than checking the level of coolant and topping it up if necessary and verifying its cleanliness you probably want to have done by a profes-sional.

An example of the universal symbols used on most cars today, this one designating the coolant reservoir ll cap. NOTE the symbol referencing the Owner’s Manual.

A clean (just a li le dusty), corrosion-free, maintenance free, well a ached ba ery. In my truck, naturally!

Various Piedmont imaging locations will offer digital screening mammo-grams at a discounted rate of $75 throughout October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly one in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. Research indicates the key to beating the disease is catching it early, usually through a regular screening (i.e., breast self-exam or screening mammogram).

“It is important women get screened for breast cancer, regardless of their family history,” said Jeffrey Allen, M.D., medical director of the Doris Sha-heen Breast Health Center at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. “Eighty percent of women who are diagnosed don’t have any reported risk factors, which in-clude family history, race and ethnicity. This means that almost any woman is at risk for breast cancer, especially those over the age of 40.”

Participating nearby locations, which offer extended hours and weekend appointments, include:

Piedmont Fayette Hospital Women’s Imaging Center

Piedmont Newnan Outpatient Center at Summit Healthplex

No physician referral is required to schedule a mammogram; however, it is required that women being screened have a doctor to receive the screening results. Patients should bring a picture I.D. with them to their appointment. The discounted mammogram price cannot be used in conjunction with in-surance coverage and payment is requested at time of service. For more in-formation, visit piedmont.org/mammogram.

“The Mystery of Irma Vep” Opens Oct. 24 at NTC

By Joan DoggrellIn “The Mystery of Irma Vep,” author Charles Ludlam

satirizes Gothic romance novels, pulp fiction, and horror movies. But he doesn’t stop there. With two actors play-ing eight different roles and changing costumes thirty-five times, Ludlam is also laughing at the entire craft of theatri-cal production. The plot is borrowed from Gothic romances such as Daphne de Maurier’s “Rebecca”and Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights,” with fantastic characters from “penny dreadful” fiction and “C” rated movies tossed in.

All of the roles (male and female) are played by Raina Bass and Diane Mitchell, with a little help from a mysteri-ous “third man,” actor Jason Lindsey.

“I would say this play is a spoof on the whole idea of melo-drama,” said Mitchell. “It’s completely ridiculous, funny, and sinister. By the way, ‘Irma Vep’ is an anagram for ‘vampire’.”

“Knowing that an actor walked off the stage and came right back on as a different character, looking completely different with a different accent and set of characteristics, really adds to the humor,” added Bass.

“This is the first time any theater has been given the legal rights to produce this play with two female leads,” said Direc-tor Jared Wright. “Charles Ludham wrote it to be performed by himself and another man. He has since passed away. But I think he would be very proud of what we are making of it. Inter-preted from a woman’s perspective, small details are coming out that haven’t been noticed in previous productions.”

“The Mystery of Irma Vep” opens at Newnan Theatre Company on October 24 and runs through November 3. Ticket prices are $8 for children, $12 for seniors and stu-dents, and $14 for adults.

The complete performance schedule is as follows: Thurs-day, October 24, 8:00 pm; Friday, October 25, 8:00 pm; Saturday October 26, 8:00 pm; Sunday, October 27, 3:00 pm; Thursday, October 31, 8:00 pm; Friday, November 1, 8:00 pm; Saturday, November 2, 8:00 pm; and Sunday, No-vember 3, 3:00 pm.

To purchase tickets, visit Newnan Theatre Company’s web site at http://www.newnantheatre.org or visit the box office before or after any performance. The theatre is locat-ed in historic downtown Newnan at 24 First Avenue.

On Halloween night, patrons are encouraged to come in costume to see the show to get a ticket discount. There will also be trick-or-treating in the lobby before the show.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

It’s (past) time to weatherize your home. Temperatures are •dropping, but if you haven’t done it yet, don’t sweat it. We have a few ideas for you. Here’s mine: Layer up and keep a sweater on when lounging about the house. Extra clothes don’t cost anything to wear, and they don’t dry out the air, either! -- JoAnnHeavy drapes can be a great investment to draft-proof your •windows. The best are insulation-lined, but you can double-hang some good, quality curtains to get a similar effect.“One of the best investments I made was a water heater cover for •my unit. It’s in the garage, and it gets very cold in there. The blan-ket was easy to install, and it keeps my water heater from having to work to keep all that water heated. It wasn’t very expensive.” -- R.A. in Washington

“Don’t overlook your outlets when weatherproofing. They are re-•ally just a hole covered by a plastic plate. The hardware store sells fireproof insulated inserts that work very well to keep electrical boxes from stealing your house heat.” -- M.M. in IndianaDraft dodgers, or door snakes, are easy to make and pro-•vide reasonable protection against drafts. To make one for yourself, you’ll need a pair of thick tights, fabric scraps cut into inch-wide strips and a big bag of rice. Cut the tights off into two long leg portions. Stuff them with fabric scraps and

then add rice to give weight and fill in the holes. When the long “socks” are full, tie them off. Lay them out along the threshold, pushing them tight against the door, where they will block the draft!

Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475 or e-mail JoAnn at [email protected].

PAW’S CORNERBy Sam Mazzott a

Halloween Treats Aren’t for Pets

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As someone who owns a lot of pets, I feel it’s important to let people know that, especially around can-dy-rich holidays like Halloween, pets cannot eat the same foods as people. It’s well-known that chocolate is poisonous to dogs, but how many people know that dogs also shouldn’t eat raisins? And that certain herbs and fl ow-ers, like eucalyptus and lilies, are toxic to cats?

For several years I’ve handed out cards along with my candies reminding kids not to feed any of their Halloween loot to their pets.

Th is year, I’m doing something diff erent. My local pet shelter is holding a “Halloween for pets.”Owners can bring their pets to the event (being held at a nearby dog park), in costume or not, and receive pet treats and coupons for pet products and veterinary ser-vices like routine vaccinations. I’m volunteering to help at the event and really looking forward to it.

Can you tell your readers about this pet-friendly option for Hal-loween? Kids will fi nd it fun and educational, and your pets will have a safe and fun time. -- Gloria in Cali-fornia

DEAR GLORIA: Th ose are both great ideas, and thank you for sharing them! Readers, check your local shelter or other pet charity for upcom-ing events to see if they’re doing something similar. If not, maybe there’s an opportunity for you to suggest -- or even lead the way to -- holding a pet trick-or-treat event.

Send your questions or comments to [email protected]. My new book, “Fighting Fleas,” is available now on Amazon.
