  • CARBON COUNTY NEWS - RL BACK TO SCHOOL PREVIEW August 14, 2014 17

Red Lodge School is announcing its policy for free and reduced price meals served under the National School Lunch Program. Each school building office has a copy of the policy, which may be re-viewed by any interested party.Application forms are being sent to all homes with a letter to parents or guard-ians. To apply for free or reduced meals, households should fill out the application and return it to the school. Verification of current income must accompany each application. Additional copies of the application forms are available in each principals office. The information provided on the appli-cation will be used for determination of eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by the school or other program officials. For school officials to determine eligibil-ity, the entire application must be filled out. Households are required to report increases in household income of over $50 per month or $600 per year and de-creases in household size. Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year. The superintendent will review applica-tions and determine eligibility. A formal appeal of that determination may be made to the Superintendent of Schools, who will conduct a hearing on the appeal. The policy contains an outline of the hear-ing procedure. Throughout the process

confidentiality is strictly adhered to.Any significant changes in employment or household size should be reported to the school. Changes may make the children of the family eligible for free or reduced price meals.

In certain cases, foster children are also eligible for these benefits. If a household has foster children living with them and wishes to apply for such meals for them, the household should contact the school for more information.

The information provided by the house-hold is confidential and will be used only for purposes of determining eligibility and verifying data.In the operation of child feeding pro-grams administered by the U.S. Depart-ment of Agriculture, no child will be dis-criminated against because of race, color, sex, national origin, age or handicap. If any member of a household believes they have been discriminated against, they should write to the Secretary of Agricul-ture, Washington, D.C. 20250.

SCHOOL LUNCHESTHE COST FOR HOT LUNCHES AT RED LODGE SCHOOLS WILL BE:

Red Lodge Schools will be offering breakfast to the students. Breakfast will start Wednesday, August 27th and will be offered to all students K-12.

Any student who has an approved application on file for free or reduced price lunch is automatically eligible for free or reduced priced breakfast. A method of counting must be established that will provide accurate counts of the number of full price, reduced price, free and adult breakfasts. The count by category for paid, free or reduced price breakfasts must be obtained at the end of the serving line. The maximum charge to a student eligible for a reduced price breakfast is 30. The previous year's application expires Oct. 1 of each school year, you must reapply.

School breakfasts provide a good start toward meeting the daily nutritional needs of food energy, protein, vitamins and minerals of students. Most school breakfasts are self-supporting, provided expensive meals are not planned. The primary problems encountered are providing the time for the breakfast (about 15 minutes) and meal counting.
