STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE – SMP’S

• Content standards tell us what the students should learn from the task or the unit.

• Standards for mathematical practice tell us how the students will gain this knowledge.

• The Standards for mathematical practice have been highlighted in the unit overview and in each individual task.

• The examples in the SMP portion of each task are specific to that task.

FAL = FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT LESSONS• Developed by the Shell Center or the KY Math

Collaborative

• There are only three FAL’s for first grade at this time.

• Because of the similarity of the content standards, the recommended FAL is the same for Unit 1 and Unit 2.

• Teachers may choose to use it with Unit 1, Unit 2, or both.

• FAL’s require planning and time.

• Number Talk Tips– Use hand signals to ensure 100%

participation– Present multiple ways of solving– Don’t be afraid to use a Think-Pair-

Share in your number talk– Create a class strategy chart– Use a ticket out the door and weekly

assessments to give students pencil and paper opportunities to practice explaining their mental math strategies.

Thank goodness! You completely mangled

my words!

I completely botched this in the

Unit 1 Update. May I try again?

Where are the OA standards? Why are you making us wait until Units 5 and 6?

Writing in Math

Standards for Mathematical Practice require students to express their thinking and record their strategies in written form.

Page 26: CCGPS Mathematics First Grade Update Webinar Unit 2: Developing Base Ten Number Sense September 12, 2013 Update presentations are the result of collaboration

Standards for Mathematical Practice

• SMP 1 – Students are required to explain their thinking when making sense of a problem.

• SMP 2 – Students are required to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

Why Write in Math Class?

Marilyn Burns (2004):“Writing in math class supports learning because it required students to organize, clarify, and reflect on their ideas—all useful processes for making sense of mathematics. In addition, when students write, their papers provide a window into their understandings, their misconceptions and their feelings about the content.”

Math Journals

Purposes:– Record strategies and solutions– Reflect upon learning– Explain and justify thinking– Provide a chronological record of student math thinking

throughout the year– Means of assessment to guide future instruction
