Additional Resources: Potential Workplace Scholarships: Have an afterschool job? Check with your workplace to find out if they offer special scholarships to their employees. Examples include Walmart, Chipotle and Burger King. Potential Scholarships through Your Parent’s Workplace: Many companies offer scholarships to dependents of their employees. Check with your parent’s workplace to find out if they have a scholarship program. Potential Bank Scholarships: Have a bank account? Check with your bank to find out if they offer scholarships to their account holders.

DACA/DREAM ACT/NON-U.S. CITIZENS: Searching for scholarships if you are under DACA or are a non-U.S. citizen can be challenging since a lot of scholarships require U.S. citizenship or that you are a permanent resident of the U.S. (i.e., have a Greencard). HS Finder (Hispanic Scholarship Fund) – Scholarship information for Latino students.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund – Provides scholarships, programmatic and capacity building support to the 47 public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund – The nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted to providing college scholarships for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI).

American Indian College Fund – Provides Native American students with scholarships and financial support for the nation’s 33 accredited tribal colleges and universities.

Dell Scholars Program – Recognizes academic potential and determination in students that have a definite need for financial assistance.

UNCF – Awards 10,000 students each year through 400 scholarship and internship programs so that students from low- and moderate-income families can afford college tuition, books and room and board.

A “Before-You-Apply” Checklist

Many scholarships require you to report a lot of information. Before you apply for scholarships, have handy the following items so the process goes as quickly as possible:

A transcript – While completing applications, you may be asked to provide your grades.

Having your transcript nearby will help you fill in this information quickly. Email the CCC, Ms. Stork at jstork@usd259.net for an electronic copy of your transcript.

A resume or activity chart – This document should include the following: o A list of clubs and organizations in which you have participated since your

freshman year as well as any corresponding leadership positions. o A list of honors and awards that you received since your freshman year. o A list of volunteer organizations with which you have served and the number of

hours served with each, plus any awards and honors that you have received for your participation since freshman year.

Two letters of recommendation – Many scholarships require you to submit one or two letters of recommendation. Identify two adults in your life who can write about your character strengths. It looks good if you have one teacher/counselor/CCC/administrator as well as one individual from outside of school (i.e., your boss, your volunteer supervisor, your pastor, etc.).

Family Income – Some need-based scholarships will ask you to include information about your family’s income. This is to help determine your “need” for certain scholarships.

Personal Statements/Essays – Often times, scholarship applications will as ask you to write about your goals, a leadership experience you have had, and/or what has motivated you to pursue a college degree. Spend some time typing up about 500 words for each of these potential prompts. You’ll thank yourself later.
