What is CCAP?The Virginia Western Community College Access Program (CCAP) is a series of public/private partnerships striving to make college available tuition-free to area high school graduates who meet program guidelines. The program covers the cost of tuition for two years at Virginia Western Community College. CCAP supports as many students as possible based on student need and funds available.

College Access CampaignTo support CCAP, the Virginia Western Educational Foundation seeks partnerships with individuals, businesses, foundations, local governments, community groups, alumni and friends who will work to strengthen educational opportunities for students across the Roanoke Valley. Together ... with your commitment ... we can make college possible.

CCAP for the Roanoke ValleyIn fall of 2013, CCAP began serving the entire Virginia Western service region, including the Cities of Roanoke and Salem and the Counties of Botetourt, Craig, Franklin and Roanoke, with the addition of Botetourt, Craig and Roanoke Counties to the existing program.

College PresidentDear Friends,

A region-wide Community College Access Program is a momentous achievement for Virginia Western Community College and the Roanoke Valley. All the localities served by the College are now integrated into CCAP and able to provide education and economic opportunities for their high school graduates.

Through CCAP, our local economy will directly benefit by having a better educated workforce. The cost of higher education will no longer be a barrier for high-quality students seeking to better themselves and achieve their goals. The College is committed to providing the support services needed to succeed in the classroom and the workplace.

CCAP is administered by the Virginia Western Educational Foundation, and is a public/private partnership that funds up to two years at Virginia Western. The Educational Foundation is committed to providing a first-class higher education experience and giving program participants the tools needed to thrive and survive the first two years of college.

The goal of CCAP is to provide the opportunity for local high school graduates to gain a college education. The continued support of private individuals, companies and governments is ensuring that the Roanoke region remains economically strong for generations to come. Investment in CCAP translates to investment in the next generation of local business leaders.

Virginia Western continues to transform the future of the Roanoke Valley, as 85 percent of our graduates serve the local workforce. The College prides itself on being a good neighbor and community partner, and is honored to serve as a quality educational resource and as the primary economic engine for the Roanoke Valley.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Robert H. Sandel, President Virginia Western Community College

Educational Foundation PresidentLooking forward to the upcoming academic year, I focus on the role the Virginia Western Educational Foundation Board of Directors plays in making the College an economic engine for the Roanoke Valley. As president of the Board, I know this vital role requires community support and shared vision.

The partnerships forged with each locality in the Roanoke Valley and the expansion of CCAP region-wide is an important advancement for the future of the Roanoke Valley. CCAP will now provide access to higher education for students across the College’s entire service region.

Support for CCAP from corporate sponsors Advance Auto Parts, Carilion Clinic, LewisGale Regional Health System, Mechanical Development Company, Inc., Medical Facilities of America, Inc., Optical Cable Corporation, Quantum Medical, Richfield, Trane, Salem Tools, Inc., DBA ST Solutions, and Waldrop Development; as well as private organizations Botetourt Education Foundation, Powell Charitable Foundation, Roanoke Women’s Foundation, and the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission; and an ever-increasing number of individuals complements the municipality investments from Salem City, Roanoke City, Roanoke City Public Schools, Botetourt County, Botetourt County Public Schools, Craig County, and Roanoke County.

This investment by businesses, organizations and community members significantly impacts students’ lives, allowing the College to provide affordable and accessible education. The Educational Foundation is committed to building on its successes and making college possible for people across the region. CCAP must be a viable and sustainable program, and the Board of Directors looks forward to providing guidance and leadership to guarantee its success.

CCAP: A brief history

Second-year CC AP students apprec iate the benefi t s o f a tu i t ion- f ree co l lege educat ion .Amber Wingate graduated from Salem High School in 2012 and enrolled in Virginia Western through CCAP. She was accepted into Virginia Western’s Dental Hygiene program and plans to work in a local dental office after graduating in Spring 2014. The City of Salem was the first locality to establish CCAP as a partnership with the Virginia Western Educational Foundation in 2008.

In 2009, Roanoke City piloted its own CCAP. Julian Johnson graduated Roanoke City’s William Fleming High School in 2012 as the youngest of three children. His family did not qualify for enough financial aid to cover tuition. He said CCAP helped him realize that he still had the opportunity to attend college. Noah Glover graduated Roanoke City’s Patrick Henry High School in 2012 and said he chose to attend Virginia Western because of CCAP and the opportunities provided for financial assistance and personal development.

Franklin County launched a CCAP pilot program in 2011. Robert Gump graduated from Franklin County High School in 2012 and joined the second class of Franklin County CCAP students at Virginia Western.

“CCAP has allowed me to pursue many other opportunities at Virginia Western, since the massive burden of college debt has been lifted from my shoulders,” he said.

With the addition of Botetourt, Craig, and Roanoke counties for 2013-14, graduates of 12 local high schools will have the opportunity to attend Virginia Western tuition-free. CCAP is removing the financial barriers and truly making college possible.

Throughout the following pages, you will read the stories of students impacted by CCAP—beginning with second-year student Julian Johnson, and then a first-year

student from each of the participating high schools now served by the Community College Access Program.

CCAP students representing the localities served by CCAP in 2012-2013.

I love the fact that you can get the same education at Virginia Western as at a four-year institution and I love that it’s for a fraction of the cost of a four-year institution and there is a smaller teacher-to-student ratio.

You Make College Possible! The 2013 Diploma Campaign marked the third annual campaign supported by Kroger and Stop-In Food Stores to benefit Virginia Western’s Community College Access Program (CCAP).

Left: Students participated in CCAP Days at local Kroger and Stop-In Food Stores to help raise funds and awareness of the program.

Right: The Kroger and Stop-In Food Stores locations that raised the most funds through the Diploma Campaign were both in Franklin County. Managers and cashiers of the stores were recognized by Virginia Western President Dr. Robert H. Sandel, Virginia Western Educational Foundation President Edwin C. Hall and Virginia Western Vice President of Institutional Advancement Dr. Angela Falconetti for their support of Virginia Western and the Community College Access Program students.

The annual Diploma Campaign occurs in May across the Roanoke Valley and is the opportunity for community members to make college possible for local high school graduates.

Page 33: CCAP 2013-2014

CCAP Workshop teaches success skillsLeft: First- and second-year CCAP students participated in the 2012 CCAP Goal-Setting Workshop. The 2013 Workshop will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7 at Charter Hall, which is on the top floor of the Market Square Building in downtown Roanoke.

At the CCAP Goal-Setting Workshop, students participate in break-out sessions focused on transfer and career readiness, goal-setting, CCAP success, and teamwork. Vice President of Trane North America Jason Bingham (pictured bottom left), a Virginia Western Educational Foundation Board member who was instrumental in establishing CCAP in Roanoke City, leads the presentation.

Trane Music Festival benefits CCAPRight: High school concert bands from the localities that were currently participating in CCAP—Patrick Henry, William Fleming (pictured middle right), Salem and Franklin County—participated in the first annual Trane Music Festival to benefit CCAP. Sponsored by Trane (pictured top right), the 2013 event raised over $23,000 for CCAP.

The 2014 Music Festival will be held on Saturday, April 5 at the Shaftman Performance Hall and will include artistic performances from high schools across Virginia Western’s service region. CCAP now serves the entire region, including Botetourt, Craig, Franklin and Roanoke Counties and Roanoke and Salem Cities.
