Cleveland College of Art & Design is an amazing place to be. We are one of the few specialist art and design colleges in the country and excel in providing students with an educational experience which is second to none.

In 2010, we came top in the National Student Survey when compared to all specialist art colleges in the country, which judged student satisfaction within their place of study.

We pride ourselves in having highly professional staff with up to date commercial experience in studios that are equipped with high quality, industry standard equipment.

From the moment you walk through the door we will be preparing you for your future employment.

Your practical work will be supported by professional practice modules at all levels of study to ensure that you are totally prepared for the workplace.

We have excellent links with industry. Employers are heavily involved in the design of our programmes, in order to ensure that they equip you with the skills to meet the needs of the creative industries. During the course of your programme ‘live’ project briefs, set by real companies, will be a feature of your studies.

We ensure programme content remains relevant to the sector through Industrial Liaison Groups. These groups are made up of working professionals, practicing both in the region and nationally. Their support is invaluable in ensuring that the programmes we run have appropriate content and the correct equipment to allow you to develop employability skills that are appropriate to the needs of industry.

Additionally, there will be opportunities to go on study visits and show your work at trade fairs, take part in national competitions and have live briefs set. Our students have won numerous prestigious awards and often sell their designs. All of our programmes are enhanced by a wide range of professional speakers.

The College is noted for the support that it gives to students and this is reflected in the number of taught hours on the programmes, which are higher than similar programmes in universities. Our intimate size means that the lecturing staff will know you well and be able to offer you the individual support that you need to succeed.

The College has all of the latest equipment and resources needed to ensure that you can complete your programme and stretch yourself to your full potential. The studios boast industry standard equipment from a digital laser cutter to high end digital backs in Photography to Gerber digital pattern development system, digital fabric printer and knitting machines in Fashion. Film & Moving Image students have the benefit of both 16mm and digital HD equipment across the production areas.

All programmes have their own specialist resources, dedicated studios and workshops and IT facilities with appropriate software and peripheral equipment.State of the art large format printers are available in Textile, Fashion and Photography studios.

Highly skilled and friendly technical staff are present on all programmes to advise and assist you.

The College’s IT facilities are excellent with a broad range of industry standard software titles specifically tailored to each discipline. We offer a wide variety of printing facilities and an exceptional interactive whiteboard provision for each programme along with more specific IT solutions to provide for the more technically specialist programmes.

We have computer suites in all programmes. These are maintained by the IT support team who can also offer helpful, friendly advice and assistance in the use of software titles and computer equipment.

Learning resource centreYour studies will be informed by a well-stocked, specialist Art & Design Learning Resource Centre. Stock includes over 25,000 books, 100 current magazine and journal subscriptions, 1600 DVDs. In addition, a wealth of online resources are also available, such as access to over 10,000 magazines, newspaper articles and over 300 e-books.

The LRC has photocopying facilities and a suite of networked workstations with internet access and a range of software.

Further support will be available via our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Blackboard. All of our programmes have a presence there and learning materials, a study skills website and additional information will supplement your studies.

Our Art Box shop offers a range of specialist art and design materials which are sold at discounted prices to students. We also have a vast menu of subsidised food on offer at our new Atrium Restaurant.

Cleveland College of Art & Design offers undergraduate programmes in our new dedicated HE campus.

Following the acquisition of prestigious historic buildings over recent years, CCAD has expanded significantly and now boasts the Leadbitter, Archive and Municipal buildings as part of the impressive campus.

These locally, well known buildings encapsulate the essence of being an Art College, they draw stark contrasts between old and new and put us at the heart of Hartlepool’s Cultural Quarter.

As part of our new campus, we have opened The Creative Lodge, with the aim of supporting our graduates in setting up a creative business. The Creative Lodge offers everything you need to start up your own creative business - including affordable, low cost rent and flexible high quality office/open studio accommodation and access to specialist college equipment.

This facility allows entrepreneurs to share contacts, concepts and creativity in a professional set up in the heart of the town centre.

Hartlepool is a vibrant town with a wealth of attractions, which represent a rich mix of the very old and the very new. From hydroballing to an award-winning maritime attraction. A whole series of public and private sector investment have seen Hartlepool change beyond recognition in the last 20 years.

The 500 berth Marina is the jewel in the crown of Hartlepool and is a 24 hour environment, which is also home to water-based activities, including the testing ‘Walk on Water’ challenge and the stunning ‘Thundercat’ speed-boats, which will take your breath away. All around the Marina area you will find superb restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs offering a fine selection of food and drink.

The ideal place to find out about all manner of entertainment in Hartlepool is the impressive Hartlepool Art Gallery, which is in the heart of Hartlepool’s Cultural Quarter, alongside our very own campus.

Only a minute’s walk away you will find ‘The Studio’, this award-winning, regional venue boasts live performances and events showcasing artists and styles from around the world. Flix Movie Cafe is next door which hosts movie quizzes and screenings of the latest releases.

As well as this host of entertainment and attractions, Hartlepool also has its fair share of modern-day facilities. The seven screen Vue Cinema is a short walk from CCAD, as is UK Superbowl.

In terms of nightlife, the choice of pubs and clubs is very impressive. As well as the fantastic offering on the Marina, the town centre also offers a fantastic variety of nightlife.

Hartlepool is also a fantastic coastal location as it is next to Seaton Carew with its broad sandy beach, traditional amusement arcades and cafes, Seaton Carew is a traditional british seaside destination. The beach stretches over one mile in each direction from the resort centre. Cyclists can enjoy the promenade which affords easy access northwards to the Marina.

Neighbouring towns such as Middlesbrough offer an energetic live music scene with popular venues like Middlesbrough’s Empire, Medicine Bar, and The Arena which holds a student SKINT night every Thursday.

The Empire has been host to some of the world’s best DJ’s including Roger Sanchez, Paul Oakenfold and Pete Tong, and the venue still attracts first class acts on an international scale. Club M in Yarm is another club not to be missed locally. Many dance acts , such as Faithless, Deadmau5, Eddie Halliwell and Tiesto have performed there.

All scenes – indie, rock, electro, hip-hop, garage and house to highlight a few – are appreciated and strongly supported.

Middlesbrough also plays host to a number of free events including most notably the Middlesbrough Mela, an event celebrating Asian culture, food and music, Intro (formally Middlesbrough Music Live) with many big name acts appearing in Middlesbrough Town Centre and Middlesbrough Fashion Week. With neighbouring Stockton-on-Tees playing host to the fantastic Riverside Festival, which showcases some truly stunning street theatre.

Newcastle is well known for having good nightlife it has become famous for its eclectic and bustling social scene. The Gate, is a big complex full of nightclubs, bars and restaurants. TigerTiger which is outside The Gate is a popular venue and offers a student night every Monday with cheap drinks. The Quayside is also a popular attraction offering a range of bars and clubs to suit every taste.

Sunderland is popular with students and locals. Nightlife in Sunderland offers something for everyone, from traditional pubs to lively bars open late into the night for party-goers around Park Lane. The Glass Spider offers live music, comedy nights and resident DJ’s. If you want to see the latest up- and-coming and established bands in an intimate setting, Plugged In is the venue for you.

The North East is renowned for the opportunities to shop until you drop! Hartlepool itself boasts the third largest indoor shopping centre in the North East, with a selection of the best high street retail stores. In Middlesbrough, you can shop in some of the trendiest retail boutiques in the country, including Psyche and Triads these shops offer you the latestdesigner gear whilst alternative shops including Deep and Howl sell unusual vintage clothing. Just a short train ride away are the fantastic facilities on offer in Newcastle and the largest shopping centre in Europe, the MetroCentre.

For film enthusiasts, the North East has proved to be a fantastic backdrop for several notable films. Films which were shot on location in the North East, include Atonement, Get Carter, Robin Hood (Prince of Thieves), Billy Elliott, Harry Potter and notably Alien 3, which was directed by CCAD alumni Sir Ridley Scott.

From the A19 turn onto the A689 sign posted Hartlepool. Continue on the A689 for approximately 5 miles to the town centre.

At the traffic lights adjacent to the fire station turn right onto Huckelhoven Way and take the first left onto Tower Street. We are on the left-hand-side at the end of the road.

There is on street pay and display parking available within walking distance of the College. Long distance coaches stop in Stockton Street only a few minutes walk from the campus. The train station is situated off Church Street which is also a few minutes away from the campus.

At Cleveland College of Art & Design, we believe in supporting our students, to enable them to achieve their full potential. Our friendly, flexible Student Support team offer a range of services designed around our students and their specific needs.

Within Student Support we can offer Information Advice and Guidance from experienced knowledgeable advisers on subjects such as:

what wiLL i studY on this programme?This exciting and unique programme of study looks at the development of skills for the entertainment industry. It provides a multi disciplinary content tailored to the individual learner and their chosen area of exploration. Delivery is by a highly skilled and dedicated programme team of academic and support staff. The programme is well equipped with a wide range of specialist workshops, and studio space is provided for each year group, which includes IT facilities with the latest industry standard software.

In your first year, Level 4, you will be introduced to the three main specialist areas of set, costume and props. Studies will include introductory workshop practice, pattern cutting, mould making, sculpting, model making, spatial design, and technical drawing. In addition to this, and continuing throughout all levels, modules in Visual Studies, Professional Studies and Contextual Studies will help to develop the theoretical knowledge which underpins practical development.

In your second year, Level 5, you will explore two chosen areas of specialism and through negotiated learning develop a range of specific skills and techniques pertinent to both areas. During this year work experience and live assignments are encouraged.

In third year, Level 6, you will develop your individual assignments through a minor and major project by concentrating on a single specialist area of study. However, the unique nature of the programme allows for the development and crossover of specialist skills from all three disciplines should you wish to do so.

what skiLLs wiLL i deveLop?Included in our portfolio of practical skills are drawing development, storyboarding, model making, pattern development, costume construction, moulding and casting, sculpting, scenic painting, digital art, and character development. An understanding of relevant working practice within employment will be developed through professional studies which, along with the underpinning contextual studies will support all aspects of the programme. More importantly you will acquire skills as an independent learner, which will help you to develop and progress beyond higher education and into professional practice.

what can i do after this programme?Career opportunities will lead the successful graduate into practically all areas of the creative industry. This includes TV, film and theatre production but increasingly our graduates have progressed to publishing, illustration, museum design, interior architecture and computer generated imagery for the games industry. Many others develop careers in art education, youth work or art administration. The programme also provides an ideal academic foundation for individuals who wish to progress on to postgraduate study.

Cheryl Holmstrom has her sights set on a sparkling future after learning the tricks of the trade from dancewear specialist Chrisanne – creators of the star studded designs seen on TV’s 2010 version of Strictly Come Dancing. Cheryl took part in a work placement with the spectacular company, which was so successful that she’s been offered a permanent role for her first graduate job.

what wiLL i studY on this programme?If you have ever been inspired by the beautiful costumes worn by actors, dancers and performers in the entertainment industries, this programme will give you the opportunity to develop the specialist skills required to create them. This degree was developed in response to industry requirements for highly skilled and versatile costumiers to interpret costume designs and concepts.

First year, Level 4 modules include; Cut and Construction Skills, History of Dress, Embellishment Techniques, Introductory Professional Studies and Work Related Costume Skills

Second year, Level 5 modules provide you with the specialist skills needed to enter the costume industry, they include; Tailoring, Millinery, Contextual Studies, Professional Studies and Work Related Costume Construction. This final module should include a period of work experience and an individual negotiated project.

This programme is taught by practitioners in the costume industry, and is enriched by a range of study visits and live assignments.There are fully equipped costume workshops and studio spaces. Technical support is always available outside of timetabled sessions.

what skiLLs wiLL i deveLop?Flat pattern cutting, and draping on the stand using period and contemporary silhouettes, structured underwear construction, fabric sourcing, research skills, study drawing techniques and technical drawing. Embellishment and costume finishing techniques are covered, along with opportunities for buying, sourcing / hiring and styling. During your second year, more advanced skills are developed in tailoring, looking at period and bespoke techniques. Millinery includes flat pattern and blocking techniques, and you will work with a range of hat and headdress trim and embellishment techniques. Research and professional practice skills are developed to prepare students for the workplace, or continuing education to BA (Hons) level.

what can i do after this programme?Work in theatre as a costume maker, costume finisher, wardrobe assistant, cutter or costume supervisor. In TV or film as a costume buyer, runner or on-set costume artist. Within heritage industries as a costume curator, restorer or keeper, and there are many related arts based costume careers you will be prepared for. Graduating students may alternatively continue onto the BA (Hons) Entertainment Design Crafts (costume option).

A Costume Construction for Stage and Screen student has opened a new chapter of her life – by making book props for an international play. Kayleigh Temple, an ex pupil of Stokesley School, jetted out to Dubai to work on a production of the comedy All the Great Books, where she had to make soft books that can be hurled at the actors without hurting them.

The experience was offered to Kayleigh courtesy of the courses great industry links as she worked for Belmondo Hat Productions, which is run by Bad Girls star James Gaddas and his brother Chris, who are originally from Stockton-on-Tees.

what wiLL i studY on this programme?This innovative award-winning programme aims to inspire and produce a new generation of fashion design entrepreneurs. The programme encourages students to develop individual flair alongside market intelligence. Skills are underpinned by knowledge and understanding of contemporary and professional issues.

Studies include design technology, marketing, visual communication, contextual studies, professional practice and enterprise.

During your first year, Level 4, you will experience a broad range of learning activities designed to stimulate your creative, practical, critical and professional development, and awareness of fashion enterprise culture.

At Level 5 you will build upon your knowledge, skills and understanding of fashion enterprise. Professional practice is emphasised through live projects and enrichment activities. Students are encouraged to become increasingly independent, through Negotiated Learning Plans.

In your final year, Level 6, you will consolidate your skills and knowledge as you focus on your individual career goals. National competition work and the production of a capsule collection and exhibitions, encourage a move towards creative and professional autonomy in preparation for the challenges of commercial life.

The programme prepares you to compete in the fashion industry. Enrichment activities include educational visits, fashion shows, work experience opportunities,

Visual, verbal, digital and written skills will be developed in order to communicate ideas to a variety of audiences. You will also develop critical and analytical skills.

what can i do after this programme?The enterprising nature of the programme encourages students to become successfully self-employed, or take their skills into employment or post-graduate study. Alumni are working in the following roles:

Leah Cooper has graduated from BA (Hons) Fashion Enterprise and is working as a designer, where she gets to showcase her skills by designing men’s, women’s and children’s wear for a highly successful supplier in Northumberland.

Leah’s skills are so highly regarded by her employer that she also has the accolade of designing for external brands such as Start Fitness/More Mile and Goldbrothers/Heritage of Scotland.

Leah also manages all samples and feeds back directly to the production sites in China and India.

what wiLL i studY on this programme?The Fashion industry requires highly skilled individuals to respond to the increasing demands within this commercially focused environment and to be able to demonstrate creative, dynamic talent. This is an innovative programme with emphasis placed on all aspects of the design process, from concept through to mass production of the product development cycle. You will be encouraged to combine commercial design knowledge and understanding of technical skills alongside business awareness to gain a rounded experience of the fashion industry.

You will explore fashion consumer behaviour related trends and how collections are developed to produce key looks. Within this you will also be taught how to analyse brands and their position in the market place.

You will be introduced to fashion styling offering the student the opportunity to design, produce and create the overall styled image through looking at the working life of a stylist. Magazine styling, personal styling and fashion PR are all explored and investigated.

Technical ability and professional presentation skills as used in industry will be developed through pattern construction and garment manufacture including; samples, specification sheets, manufacturing processes and fabric sourcing including compositions, form and function and technological developments.

Live, client led projects will inspire and promote a competitive spirit within the students and work experience will be a crucial element in personal development and progression of skills in the workplace. The programme will provide a wide range of work related opportunities for students including live assignments, visits to trade shows, competitions and work experience in design, manufacture, retail and marketing. The College has excellent studios, workshops and resources. You will be supported in your learning by a team of professional academic and technical staff.

what skiLLs wiLL i deveLop?You will learn how to work with clients, plan, research, originate and develop ideas and acquire technical skills such as pattern cutting, moulage and garment production. You will learn about CAD CAM for the fashion industry, including experience on the Gerber PDS2000 Accumark system. A range of visual, verbal, digital and written skills will be developed in order to communicate a range of ideas to a variety of audiences. You will also develop critical and analytical skills and increasingly manage your own learning.

what can i do after this programme?You can either go into employment or progress into the third year of the BA (Hons) Fashion Enterprise. Employment opportunities include:

Vicky Wake shares a wealth of knowledge of the fashion industry with students giving them an insight into the business. For eight years, Vicky worked for Ally Capellino, in London, as a design coordinator.

Vicky, a former CCAD student, now programme leader for the BA (Hons) Fashion Enterprise and FdA in Creative Fashion Practises courses, designed men’s and women’s wear for the prestigious design label, in which she oversaw the running of the studio the pattern cutters and machinists. In addition to this, she liaised with factories to ensure the samples were correct and was very involved in all preparations leading up to London Fashion Week twice yearly, along with travelling widely taking collections to agents around the world.

what wiLL i studY on this programme?This programme is about exploring a broad range of approaches to the culture of photography. what wiLL i studY on this programme?This is a course designed for students to learn about and be prepared to enter the exciting and demanding industry of Professional Photography.

Level 4 introduces you to the basics of photography via film capture and hand printing. The course covers industry standard digital capture and print production, covering current practices ranging from advertising to social photography. Combining business and retouching skills, you will make images for external agency briefs, and have an opportunity to explore personal creative work. An overview and introduction to the history of photography underpins practical work.

Level 5 expands upon the professionalism acquired in the previous year. There is an exploration of contemporary techniques, both in the studio and on location. The year ends with you presenting a portfolio of work. In a professional capacity you will design a personal web site and business card, have the opportunity to register for a student press pass, and join the main professional associations.

The College provides the ideal environment to study in, with a dedicated programme team who continually keep up to date with latest developments in the industry. We have a new state of the art high-end digital Apple Mac suite and brand new darkrooms for traditional Black and White or even Colour printing. Commercial photography students have snapped up worldwide recognition after helping to promote Hartlepool on a global stage. Their images were chosen in a competition organised by Hartlepool Borough Council and published in the borough’s annual calendar which was sent as far afield as Australia and New Zealand and even hangs in the House of Commons in London. The overall winner Claire Harman was awarded £500 for her black and white image of Hartlepool’s Quayside. She also had a further three images selected for the calendar

what wiLL i studY on this programme?This programme enables future graphic designers to respond to the challenges of a dynamic and rapidly changing profession. It emphasises industrial relevance through live projects, specialist speakers and advisors from industry, and includes work based learning as a central focus. Creativity and skills are the key ingredients.

The first year, Level 4, provides an introduction to fundamental concepts and skills required by graphic designers. Modules include Typography, Ideas Generation and Visualisation, Digital Graphics for Print, Design Process and Professional Practice. Awareness of visual culture and study skills are introduced in the Introductory Contextual Studies module. The year concludes with Working to a Commercial Brief, which includes a client led major project.

Second year, Level 5, modules explore graphic design in greater depth. Work becomes increasingly demanding as you become ready for work or progression to honours level.

Practical modules include Visual Identity and Branding, Editorial Design and Multimedia. Contextual Studies explores theoretical issues in graphic design and you can select an area of interest for a research project. what wiLL i studY on this programme?This programme provides an exciting learning experience in a professional environment making short, drama, documentary and experimental films, as well as a range of negotiated and self-defined projects and client work. This supports the production of a show-reel of original work, applicable to a wide range of platforms, including the gallery, cinema, broadcast media, and the web.

Working in groups or individually you will learn to use a range of equipment with confidence, from Super 8 and 16mm film cameras and Steenbeck editing, to HD filming and post-production to bring your ideas to life. Communication, organisation, commitment and energy, will drive your projects forward, enabling you to work to the best of your ability in a supportive and professional environment. You will find and develop your own unique ways of working and be supported in the creation of individual and group productions.

You will be part of a selected cohort with plenty of access to equipment and your own specialist areas of study to work in. Technical support is provided enabling you to work independently outside of taught hours. what new skiLLs wiLL i deveLop?Students are, within a project framework, introduced to a large range of media, processes and techniques – colour theory, basic visual language and composition introductory painting principles, the research process and appreciation of contemporary art. An experimental approach to media and materials supports the development of increasingly individual creative responses. Drawing is developed from basic principles through to an appreciation of drawing as a major medium for expression, and with a programme of life drawing to develop observational and analytical skills. The course is supported by growing experience of the issues and concerns underpinning contemporary art. Through a variety of activities and projects students develop research skills and the capacity to think creatively and conceptually and to apply this to the creation of challenging and ambitious work. In the second year students design their own individual projects and work with higher levels of independence supported by tutorials and seminars.

what can i do after this programme?The programme has an excellent reputation for sustaining high progression rates, to degrees in Fine Art.

Successful completion of the course will also enable students to take part in the College arrangement to progress to higher level programmes within the College.

It is likely that you are a mature applicant, who, unlike school or college students, cannot readily seek advice from your teacher, but instead consult with various careers organisations (such as Connexions). when to appLYStudents should apply by the 15th January 2012 to be considered as an on-time applicant. Students should ensure they meet the deadline for applications.

Applicants will be invited for an interview with theirportfolio, before an offer is made.

International students should apply through UCAS and will be asked to submit an online portfolio for inspection. An interview will also be arranged via telephone or skype.

interview preparationDuring interview at CCAD a significant emphasis is placed on evidence of visual and creative ability in the form of a portfolio of work.

Applicants for Art & Design courses are normally invited for an interview which enables you to see our outstanding facilities, meet staff and students, and view current work. It also provides us with an opportunity to discuss your portfolio and help youdecide which is the best degree route for you.

All applicants are considered on their own merit and usually will have successfully completed one of the following routes:

BTEC Edexcel National Diploma, Foundation Studies in Art & Design, AVCE, A Levels or other comparable level qualifications.

CCAD welcomes applications from a wide selec-tion of qualification backgrounds, including students with nontraditional qualifications. The portfolio and interview remains an important part of the selection procedure. Please refer to the website for up to date entry requirement information.

It is expected that all students will have a level 2 qualification in English. Where appropriate, a condi-tional offer of a place will be made in terms of a tariff score.

2nd Year entrY Students should apply as normal through UCAS for advanced entry.

feesAt the time of print, the fees for higher education in 2012 had not been set. Please visit our website www.ccad.ac.uk for updates on tuition fees.It is important to remember that:

• No fee is payable up front. The cost is covered by a loan, which you would start repaying when you have graduated and are earning over £21,000 a year. These payments are deducted through the PAYE system, the same way your national insurance payments are taken.

• Repayments will be 9% of income above £21,000 (so if you earn £22,000 you will pay back around £1.73 a week!)

• There are scholarships and grants available depending on your household income. At time of print, the Government had not announced details of these, but please visit our website for updates.
