CCA Picnic

On a cool and breezy Sunday in October, over 300 CCA members and friends gathered at Tropical Park for CCA’s annual fall picnic. It was a wonderful day to meet and greet old friends, make new friends and enjoy the park and great weather. Families brought chairs and tables and blankets and spread out around our pavilion to enjoy the day together.

Aunt June Chin said grace before everyone enjoyed the delicious lunch of green salad, pasta salad, fricassee chicken, and rice and peas catered by Gilly and Shirley Simm. There were also hot dogs and watermelon for everyone to enjoy. Lola Chen face painted the children from 10 am to 2 pm. The children played in the playground, ran up and down the hill and many members rented a bicycle and went bike riding. There was a wonderful Tai Chi performance by Taoist Tai Chi Group and later in the afternoon, the kids competed in a hula hoop contest, three legged race, lime and spoon race, chopstick and peas race, and fill the cup with spoons of water race.

We would like to thank the social committee who organized the picnic, Lena DeQuattro, Lurline Tenn Yuk, Margaret Lee, Anna Casey, Ellen Lee, JoAn Fong-Yee, George Yap, Ken Lee and Debbie Lowe, for all their hard work in making the picnic a success. Thanks also to Lola Chen for facing painting, to our servers at the picnic and those who helped to sell the picnic tickets. Remember to get tickets to our Christmas Dance on December 19th at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Has 2009 gone as you hoped it would? Did you achieve all of your personal and professional goals in 2009? If so, congratulate yourself. If not, the best time to properly plan is now as 2010 is just around the corner. Many of us have strong abilities at creating effective short-term plans and strategies when given the long-term goal, but just can’t seem to identify and pursue our own individual dreams. This is not because there is a lack of wanting to be prosperous, but rather there is a misunderstanding that if you are able to create excellent short-term goals and strategies, then one day you will wake up and magically be enlightened with a true sense of purpose and your vision will be predefined for you. Well, don’t wait until then because that time may never get her. Instead, take a proactive approach to analyzing your life and visualizing your personal and professional future. Your vision must be powerful and your

inner self must believe in it, otherwise you will decrease the probabilities of fulfilling your lifelong dream.

You can determine whether your defined vision is powerful if can you close your eyes and feel a magnetic pull of your vision toward happiness. If you have a powerful vision statement, you should get very invigorated and enlightened when discussing your vision with others? If you don’t, then chances

are there is something missing. To strengthen your vision, ask yourself these three questions: (1) What is my true passion? (2) What are my strongest capabilities? And (3) What would really make me happy . . . whether it be family, spiritual happiness, and/or financial wealth. A powerful vision statement contains a combination of: (1) Passion, (2) Potential, and (3) Prosperity. Start now in identifying and defining your own personal vision statement. And, the next time you feel a little lost, ask yourself, “Do I truly believe in my vision and, if not, when am I going to make that change which will enhance my life forever?”

games Day

On Sunday, October 4th and November 1st, a group of approximately 30 members enjoyed games day at our new temporary facility, the South Miami Bridge Club, on US 1 and 121 Street in the Dixie Belle Shopping Center. A delicious lunch and dinner was made by Leslie Chin. Games day is organized by Richard and Lena DeQuattro. Thanks to the DeQuattros hard work in locating a place, we are temporarily using this facility, which is convenient for all our members. Hopefully this will be our games day new home.

WeddingsIf ever there was a perfect day it should

be your wedding day and August 1, 2009 was such a day for the celebration of the wedding of Kerry-Ann Chen & Jason Rin. The bride and groom are the children of William and Carmen Chen and Arman and Evelyn Rin. The ceremony was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church and afterwards over 300 guests were treated to an elaborate reception

full of great entertainment at the Deauville Beach Resort. The love and happiness of the bride and groom were felt by everyone throughout the evening. The talented Wing Lung Kung Fu & Tai Chi Association started off the evening by performing the traditional dragon dance ceremony believed to bring good luck. Congratulations once again to the happy couple.

AccomplishmentsMARCUS A. MIGUEZ, was named to the DEAN’S LIST

of the College of Engineering for the Spring term of 2009 at the University of Florida. Marcus is the son on Enid Miguez and J.C. Miguez and the grandson of Victor and Gloria Chen.

DUSTIN CHIN & SHEILA MILITANTE were married on 10/12/2009 in Las Vegas. The wedding was attended by many friends and relatives from Miami, including Dustin’s dad, Don Chin and apo, Cynthia Chin. Dustin grew up in Miami and moved to Las Vegas where he met Sheila.

SHANNON BLAKEY & JAMES PRATHER were married in a beautiful backyard service in Maui where the couple resides. Shannon is the daughter of Kevin & Grace Blakey and granddaughter of Cynthia Chin. Shannon and James are originally from South Florida.

DANIEL CHIN & LINDSEY BARBER were married on October 3, 2009 in a beach service held at the lighthouse at Billy Baggs Park on Key Biscayne. The party then moved to the home of Al and Patsy Merritt where the new couple and guests were treated to a dinner prepared by Uncle Anson Chin. Daniel is the son of Morris Chin

(formerly of Port Antonio, Jamaica) and Margaret Chin. The couple resides in North Carolina.

DeathsCHANG, KWAI YING, 86 passed

away on October 15, 2009. She was the beloved wife of Ah-Chen (passed), kind & devoted mother to Yuet (passed) & Sharon, Tim & Sherilyn, Yat Wing; beloved grandmother (Popo) to Alicia, Derek, Deanne, Nicole, Sabrina, Alessandra, Isabella and Vanessa. Popo lived a long and eventual life in China , Jamaica , and US. From a Hakka farming town, Popo experienced

China ’s history from WWII to communism. Popo lived simply in Miami, with multiple pictures of all grandkids.

YAP, PATRICK, 96, passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 22nd, 2009. Predeceased by his beloved wife Mabel, on December 27, 2004. He is survived by his loving and ever so grateful children: Gloria (Ken Phang), Eric, Hope (Late Edwin Chang), Shirley (Gilbert Simm), Theresa (Authur Wong), Doris, George

(Late Einez), and Richard (Yvonne); 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

TENN YUK, FLORENCE MAY, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her beloved family and friends on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Pre-deceased by her loving husband, Charles, she leaves behind seven children: Charles “Junior” (Lurline), Yvonne “Sue” Yap (Richard), Hector “Benny”, Colin (Elizabeth),

Here are a few tidbits on my recent trip to China:

MEMORY CARDS – Months before the trip, memory cards were on sale so I bought 2 x 16-GB cards. I took almost 4,000 pictures using a single memory card.

A/C ADAPTERS FOR CHARGERS – Hotels had western style electrical outlets. No problems recharging batteries.

INTERNET/E-MAIL – We were able to access email every day. Hotels provided free internet for 30 minutes or had a minimal charge.

SUBWAY/TAXI – In Beijing , we met one of my cousins that lived there. Getting around town was easy and cheap! Subway maps, signage, and announcements in the train were in English and Chinese. We also had a 20 minute taxi ride that cost US$4.00.

TOUR GUIDE – Take along a nice new Jamaican T-shirt. If you go with Palmetto, chances are that Davis will be your tour guide. Davis is a really, really great tour guide, very personable, very knowledgeable, ensures that you are having a great time, and he loves those crazy Jamaicans that like to have a good time. The t-shirt is for Davis .

CUSTOM MADE JEWELRY – I ordered a couple pieces of custom made jewelry that had to be shipped to me in the US . No problems – I got them according to promised schedule
