Cayo Christian Academy’s Mission Statement:

The mission of Cayo Christian Academy is to provide a secondary education to the youth of Belize that will prepare them to meet the challenges of their time. We will seek to develop the spiritual, physical, intellec-tual and social needs of each student through relevant curriculum, both academic and vocational that will give each student the abilities to live a life of excellence.

WELCOME STUDENTS:

On behalf of the faculty, we would like to welcome you to Cayo Christian Academy for the upcom-ing academic school year. We are looking forward in assisting you in achieving your dreams. Cayo Christian Academy has a history of fine academic and extracurricular accomplishments. We will do whatever is essential for you to be successful and to make our school a better place. You can benefit from everything Cayo Christian Academy has to offer by being actively involved in your classes and the programs offered. If you encounter difficulties, seek out any of our trained professionals, and we will do the best to help you. We are here to make your year as successful, yet educationally challenging, as possible. We welcome the opportunity to help you as you proceed through your high school career.

Cayo Christian Academy’s Goals

The goals and objectives of Cayo Christian Academy is to provide a secondary educational institution that will develop the spiritual, physical and intellectual need of Belize’s Youth. Each student will develop vari-ous skills from the specific and concrete to the general and abstract.

Goals:

(1) A knowledge and practice of Godly and healthy lifestyles

(2) An appreciation of and respect for different people and cultures and a commitment to justice and equity for all

(3) Spirituality, social skills and positive personal qualities

(4) Intellectual skills and qualities

(5) A knowledge of Belize and a commitment to its nationhood and development

(6) An understanding of the economics of Belize and the world, the appreciation of work, the capacity to partici-pate in economic activities, skills in design and the ability to use a range of technologies

(7) A knowledge of the universe along with the solar system and a special understanding of the earth.

(8) An understanding of systems and sub systems in the physical world, including the natural environment and the need to preserve it

(9) An understanding of number,(numeracy and literacy)quantity and space and the application of relevant concepts

(10) An appreciation and participation in the expressive arts, particularly within the Belizean culture

(11) The ability to communicate proficiently in the languages prevalent in Belize with fluency in English and Spanish

Closed Campus for CCA students:

Cayo Christian Academy will be a closed campus. This means every student will have their breaks and eat their lunch in the designated area on the school campus. There will be opportunity to purchase snacks and / or a lunch each day. Students may also bring their own lunch. Parents that bring a lunch for their child need to leave it with the cafeteria staff. There is no eating or drinking (except bottled water) inside the school buildings / classrooms.

Students are not to leave the school campus for any part of the school day unless they have permis-sion to leave from the principal or teacher in charge. Written permission from the principal will be given to the student that needs to leave campus to travel home during the school day.

VISITORS OR PARENTS:

All visitors or parents are expected to check with the school receptionist / principal before proceeding anywhere on the campus. Only under emergency or counseling situations will a student or teacher be called out of class. Any visitor can leave messages with the CCA office for teachers or students.

Confiscated items (excluding electronic or computerized devices)

• ANY ITEM CONSIDERED TO BE A WEAPON or not beneficial to the welfare of the school/ student WILL BE CONFISCATED AND WILL NOT BE RETURNED. Expulsion will be considered.

• $20.00 for any other confiscated item. Retrievable items are items that contravene the school rules ex-cluding items that are deemed dangerous. Parents must personally retrieve any retrievable item. Report card will not be issued unless payment is made.

• Cayo Christian Academy will not be held liable for any items that have been confiscated.

• At the end of the academic school year all unclaimed items will be disposed of.

Policy on Cell phone, CD players, MP3 players, game boys, flash drives, cameras

• Cameras (not cell phone cameras) may be used during school hours if it is for school related activities.

• Cell phones and all other electronic devices must be turned off during school hours and / or while on the school campus.

• If a student has an electronic device on during school hours the device will be confiscated and 5 demerits will be given.

• Confiscated electronic devices can only be retrieved by parent in person within 1 week from the date of confiscation for a $25.00 fee.

• Electronic devices left after 1 week from the date of confiscation can be retrieved by parent for a $35.00 fee.

• Cayo Christian Academy will not be held liable for any electronic devices unclaimed after 1 week.• At the end of the academic school year all unclaimed items will be disposed of.

• Flash Drives may only be used for class related activities only.

Buying and selling Policy• No student is to bring items to school for the purpose of buying or selling those items.

• Only CCA approved fund raising will be allowed.

Tardy policy – All students coming to school late must report to the CCA office upon arrival to school. • Students must receive a late slip from the CCA office in order to enter class.

• 2 excused tardies per quarter allowed – on the third tardy and every tardy after during a given quarter parents will be notified.

• If a student has more than 5 tardies in a given quarter parents will have to come to school for a con-ference with principal.

• If parents call on the phone and give reason for child’s tardiness the student will be excused from being tardy.

• Missing the appropriate bus to get to school on time will not be an acceptable excuse.

Skipping classes (The student is / was already present at school)

• If a student skips any class or portion of a class 3 demerits will be given and the amount of time that was missed is doubled and made up after school. Parents will be notified.

Skipping school (The student has not yet reported / arrived at school or leaves without permission)

• If a student skips school or any portion of the school day 5 demerit will be given and the amount of time that was missed is doubled and made up after school. Parents will be notified.

• Leaving during a school related activity and / or field trip while on the field trip without the consent of Principal or Vice Principal will result in a minimum of 10 demerits. Parents will be notified.

Absent Policy

• Parents are asked to call via phone the CCA office before 7:50am to indicate that their child will not be attending classes for that day. Phone number 802 - 2009

• If the parent does not call a note must be sent with their child when the child returns to school.

• Failure to present a note will result in disciplinary action. Students forging their parent’s signature will be disciplined accordingly.

• If a not is not brought the parent will have to present reason for absence in person. Student will return to classes only when parent accompanies them.

• Absences with a medical excuse from the hospital / doctor will not be counted at the end of the year against promotion policies. Valid medical papers must be presented.

• Upon returning to school the student must report to the CCA office with their excuse note from home before morning classes begin and receive a re-admit slip.

• Spanish speaking parents: Excuse notes may be written in Spanish.

• Students may not enter classes unless they have a re-admit slip from the CCA office.

Educational Tours / Field Trips

• All Students must have written permission from parent or guardian.

• Students forging parent signatures will be disciplined according to CCA Rules.

• All students will normally be given the privilege to participate on educational tours.

• Any students not participating on educational tours / field trips will be required to present themselves at school on the day of the tour.

• In some cases the non-participating student may be required to do research reports / class presentations on given topics.

Student textbook storage compartments: • Textbook storage compartments are to be kept in an orderly fashion.• No food / drink items are to be kept in the compartments.• CCA is not responsible for any text books taken from storage compartments.• Each student is entitled to the use of one storage compartment.

• Students are not to leave text books in the classrooms that are not their homeroom.

Eligibility to participate in CCA sports competitions:

• Must be a CCA student

• Cannot be older than 21according to national sports rules starting in September of each school year

• Must have a Social Security Card,

• Must be passing Bible, English, Math, and Science at end of a quarter grades.

• Must have less than 15 Demerits on first demerit card.

• Must practice with team the day before a competition or player will not start the game in the following competition.

• Must regularly practice with the team.

• STUDENT MUST BE PRESENT AT SCHOOL THE DAY OF COMPITITION

Cayo Christian Academy’s Eligibility for Entrance:

1) Students that have successfully completed Std 6 and / or the PSE.

2) or Students that have attended other high schools and wish to transfer.

3) or Students that can successfully complete a placement test given by Cayo Christian Academy

4) The proper documents must be submitted.

A. All students are asked to supply a birth certificate, a copy of their passport or a copy of Social Security card

B. Permanent residents of Belize must also submit proof of residency.

5) Submit Transcripts from previous high schools or Standard 5 and 6 report cards if entering high school for the first time.

6) Submit recommendation form from Principal of previous school.

7) As of 2011 – 2012 school year ALL students are required to have a valid Social Security Card.

All RENTED books must be returned at the end of each school year. If any rented books are in need of minor repairs then a small fee (between $2.00 to $20.00) will be charged. If books are beyond repair or lost then the student will have to pay the full price of the book to replace it.

• A student must have an average of 70 or above to pass a subject. Failed courses that are required must be retaken to get credit for them. All subjects except English and Biblical Studies can be repeated only once. Failure to pass the repeating subject will cause the student to repeat the form they are presently in. Subjects that are passed cannot be repeated. In the case of the student being promoted the student will have to take the required subjects for that form along with the repeating subject.

Repeating a Form • Students may only repeat any Form one time. • Student must withdraw from school if they fail a Form a second time.

Transfer students (Any student that has been enrolled in any other High School)

• Students will be on probation for the first 2 quarters upon their entrance with all subjects meeting the passing mark of 70. Failure to meet passing mark will result in academic intervention.

• Conduct guideline - Student must not obtain more than 10 demerits within any given quarter during the year.

• Failure to meet the conduct guidelines will result in withdrawal from school at the end of the school year or before.

• If the student is repeating a Form for the third time due to failing in their previous institution twice al-ready they may only take that form once at CCA

Exam Policy

• All students will be required to sit final exams.

• If fees are not paid by the issuance of the first report card $150.00 will have to be paid in addition to the normal late fee charges to secure report.

• If exams are missed due to an absence they must be made up the day the student returns to school.

• Final exams are 25% of the quarter grade.

Transcripts• Transcripts will only be issued if all school fees have been paid in full.• There will be a charge of $10.00 for the transcript.

Guidelines for Promotion:Any one or more of the following will / may result in promotion being denied.

Preparatory class

• Must pass all subjects to be promoted to 1st Form. Unless, student has been identified to enter the Alter-native Curriculum Program.

1st through 4th Form

• Promotion denied – If a student fails English and / or Biblical Studies at any grade level.

• Promotion denied --- If a student fails a third subject along with English and Biblical Studies if the subject is Math or Science

• Promotion denied -- If a student fails any three of the following subjects Science, Math, History, Geogra-phy or an elective class.

• Promotion denied-- If the student fails to attend less than 166 days of the 180 required days of attendance. NOTE: Extenuating circumstances will not affect the 166 day count. Absences due to unavoidable medi-cal conditions verified by a physician who has been approved by CCA will not affect the 166 day count.

Final averages are determined by adding the averages of the quarter grades and dividing four (4)

The final decision for promotion will be made by the Principal and Vice Principal who are in consultation with the CCA board.

Quarter report cards

• Parents can speak specifically to subject teachers concerning your child’s grade in that subject.

• Parents are to receive quarter reports from their child’s homeroom teacher.

• Parents are to pick up quarter report cards from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on designated report card day.

• All report cards that are not picked up on designated day and time will be issued from the school office by Principal or Vice Principal.

• End of the year Report cards will be ready for parents to receive the first Thursday and Friday after classes have ended.

• The Principal may request a conference with parents concerning their child’s performance.

There are 3 important stakeholders in the success of a CCA student:

3. Cayo Christian Academy

Unified cooperation towards success is of the utmost importance. CCA is committed to the success of each student. However it cannot accomplish this on its own. WE need the parent and the student to do their part also.

The following accountability program will therefore be implemented this 2011-2012 school year.

Academic accountability:

• Homework / projects will be assigned by each teacher in a reasonable fashion.

• All homework / projects must be done by the student in its entirety on time.

• All quizzes must be taken at said times. If student is absent they have 2 school days to make up quiz. Quizzes are to be taken after school under the supervision of Teacher.

• All tests must be taken at said times. If student is absent they have 2 school days to make up test. Tests are to be taken afterschool under the supervision of Teacher.

Actions to be taken if student does not fulfill his or her homework / project responsibilities

1. Principal and parents will be notified.

2. Student(s) will have to stay after school on the same day to complete homework. Ar-rangements will be made between teacher and students.

3. Student can only get a maximum grade of a 90% on home work.

4. Failure to stay after school to do homework will result in a zero on that homework.

5. Parent and Student may have to come in for consultation

Actions to be taken if student does not fulfill his or her Quiz or Test responsibilities

1. Principal and parents will be notified.

2. Parent and Student may have to come in for consultation.

3. A grade of zero will be awarded.

CCA Honor Roll Criteria (Jewels for your crown!)Four honor rolls will be issued each year at the end of each quarter based on quarter marks.

Principal’s Honors:Students who maintain a 95% or above average, with no grade below 90%. High Honors: Students who maintain a 90% or above average, with no grade lower that 85%. Honors: Students who maintain an 85% or above average, with no grade lower than an 80%. Honorable Mention: Students who maintain an 85% or above average, with no grade lower than a 75%.

How can a student earn jewels for their CCA crown? 1. Make the CCA Honor Roll. 3 – 10 jewels2. Be an active spiritual leader. 3 – 15 jewels3. Do not lose any merits on your Merit card for 1 entire quarter. 3 jewels4. Be a student that wears their uniform properly on a consistent basis. 2 jewels5. Show responsibility in your duties at school. 1 – 5 jewels6. Volunteer to help at school without being asked. 1-5 jewels7. Be consistently involved in extracurricular activities. 1-5 jewels8. Get your parents to do volunteer work at school. 5 – 15 jewels9. Get your parents to actively participate in school activities. 10 – 20 jewels10. Actively keep the school grounds clean and well cut. 1 – 7 jewels11. Never miss doing a homework assignment. 5 jewels per quarter12. Perfect attendance, on time for all classes and activities. 3 jewels per quarter

How will I receive my Jewels?

• If a student feels they have earned any jewels for the week they must apply for those jewels every Fri-day. How? The student must write out the good works they had accomplished for the week and submit it to the office.

• The staff of CCA will collectively agree on the number of jewels to be awarded to each student on a weekly basis.

What will happen to the jewels you have earned?

• The top 10 students with the most jewels for their crown at the end of the school year will receive a reward for their faithfulness. The reward will be monetary or merchandise or equivalent in nature.

• The student must have obtained a minimum of 250 jewels to be eligible for the reward.

Duties of Teachers

• Teachers are to sign in by 7:45am and may sign out when responsibilities have been completed. Aca-demic Accountability 3:00

• Every Monday Teacher and Support Staff meeting will start at 3:00pm

1) Teachers are required to develop under the supervision of Principal, Vice-Principal or Head of Department as applicable, annual and weekly teaching plans with reference to the national curriculum and status and needs of their students in relation to the specified learning outcomes of the national cur-riculum.

2) Teachers are required to prepare for and conduct classroom and other intramural educational activities in accordance with their teaching plans and with school policies and plan for the education of students.

3) Teachers are required to regularly assess student progress, maintain records of such assessment and regularly report on student’s attainment to parents and school administration.

4) Teachers are and shall be required to supervise and to monitor the well being of students in their care and to identify and refer students requiring special attention to the administration.

5) Teachers are and shall be required to maintain a record of student attendance and other pertinent school records.

6) Teachers are and shall be required to participate in official school development activities as de-termined by the Managing Authority.

7) Teachers are required to participate in home-school and community liaison efforts, including Par-ent Teacher Association meeting, for the improvement of communication and working relationships with parents and the community.

8) Teachers are and shall be required to participate in educational and professional development activities as determined by the Principal and management.

9) Teachers are required to participate in official civic and spiritual ceremonies and activities, where such activities occur during normal school hours, or as agreed by staff.

Expectations of all Teachers

1) Teachers are required to be in their respective classrooms in reasonable time to receive their students for class instruction prior to classes commencing.

2) Teachers shall attend staff meetings scheduled by the Principal and / or management.

3) Teachers are expected to conduct themselves on and off campus in a manner that reflects a Godly life-style.

4) Teachers are expected to appear before their classes professionally attired.

5) Teachers shall be liable for disciplinary action for the following offenses:

(a) Misconduct whether in the course of his duties or not, inconsistent with the fulfillment of conditions of service.

(b) Habitual lateness

(c) Absences without permission or without other reasonable excuse

(d) Habitual or substantial neglect of duties

(e) General inefficiency in the performance of his duties

Such disciplinary action may take the form of a warning, reprimand, suspension, and deferral, loss of increment or dismissal. The action taken will be in accordance with the Education Poli-cies Pages 92-102

6) Teachers shall be responsible for the proper care of all school property. Any loss or damage of property may result in compensation or replacement of property in the case of the teacher’s negligence to give proper care.

Cayo Christian Academy Student Rules

Minor offences warranting up to 5 demerits including, but not limited to, the following:• Attendance • Behavior • Chewing or Spitting • No demerit card or loss / damage of demerit card • Equipment• Neatness• Punctuality (2 late arrivals in given week or repeated late arrival) • Uniform• Inappropriate use of electronic devices (Cell phones must be turned OFF while on the CCA campus)• Other (issues that have not yet arose)

Major offences warranting up to 10 demerits or but not limited to the following:• Repeated Violations of the above Minor offences• Using obscene language• Disrespect for teachers and peers • Cheating on homework, quizzes, tests (plus a grade of ZERO)

• The willful destruction of school property and / or the property of others. (Perpetrators will be expected to replace property or pay for damages incurred)

• Repeated violation of dress code

• Possession of pornographic material or other writings or drawings that are deemed unwholesome to the mind of the child.

• Fighting includes verbal confrontations before, during or after school

• Intimidating other students

• Other (issues that have not yet arose)

Offences resulting in the form of an in-school suspension including but not limited to the following: • Earning 15 demerits on the first demerit card

• Cheating on a Final Exam plus a grade of ZERO on the Exam

• Writing of gang symbols on school property or the displaying of gang symbols on person or in materials i.e. notebooks, backpacks, cell phones etc. brought or used in school.

(Including hand signals, bandanas / wash clothes, gang colors, tattoo’s)• Any act of immorality • Common assault and /or fighting• Disrespect for authority

• Theft of any nature• Purchasing and /or consuming of alcoholic beverages Student may be asked to submit to blood test

• Purchasing, and / or smoking / chewing of tobacco in any form

• Anyone who is caught, voluntarily admits or where there is probable cause in the use of illicit drugs. Student may be asked to submit to blood test

• (Professional counseling and rehabilitation will be mandatory before reinstated back to classes) • Attendance at clubs, discotheques, dance halls, or bars

• Any misdemeanor as defined by the Criminal Code

The Principal / Vice- Principal or Board of Management reserves the right to the search of any person or their personal property or any other place on school property if there is probable cause to believe that students are bringing or in possession of weapons, alcohol, illicit drugs or any item that would pose a threat to the school. The search will be conducted by no fewer than two members of staff and may involve a Police Officer.

Serious offences resulting in the automatic expulsion from school:• Any Student earning an accumulative total of 30 or 15 demerits • Refusal to serve the one week in-school suspension. • Abortion• Membership in gangs or the use of gang symbols• Burglary• Aggravated assault• Grievous harm• Possession, peddling and trafficking of illicit drugs • Bringing lethal weapons to school or the use of at school

• Any other felony as defined by the Criminal Code

Pregnancy/Parenthood

Cayo Christian Academy is a secondary school for boys and girls that are single and living with parents or legal guardians. Therefore parents, expectant parents or students who cohabit will not be eligible to enter school or if already enrolled they are required to withdraw from school.

Any male student that is responsible for a pregnancy will be expected to withdraw from school the remainder of the school year. He may be readmitted to school the following year. At the time of readmission he must undergo counseling sessions. He will have to repeat the grade / subjects he was in at the time of with-drawal. Any male student that is responsible for a second pregnancy will be expelled. A Blood Test may be required to prove or disprove the legitimacy of each case. This will be done by physician approved by CCA.

Any female student that becomes pregnant must withdraw from school immediately. She will be re-admitted the following school year provided that she is not still pregnant or has not terminated the pregnancy through abortion. She will have to repeat the grade / subjects she was in at the time of withdrawal. She must undergo counseling upon being readmitted to school. If the same female student gets pregnant a second time she will be expelled. A medical exam by a medical doctor may be performed to prove or disprove the legitimacy of each case. This can be done by a physician approved by CCA.

Explanation of Merit / Demerit System

• Every student will be issued a merit card at the beginning of the each school year. It is the job of the student to keep all of his or her merits. Be a good steward of God’s blessings.

• If a student cannot produce their merit card when asked 2 demerits can automatically be given in addi-tion to their demerits for the offence. Students must have their merit cards available at all times.

• A fee of $15.00 will be charge if a student loses or damages their card. If a student reports to the office the loss or damage of card before being required to present it no demerits will be given.

• Prep, First and Second Form students will have a total of 15 merits each merit card with every 5 demer-its resulting in a “JUG”.

• Third Form and Fourth Form students will have a total of 15 merits on their merit card with every 5 demerits resulting in a “JUG”

• Third Form students will be issued a second merit card with only 10 merits on it.

• Fourth Form students will only be issued one merit card with 15 merits on it.

If a Fourth Form student earns 15 demerits they may be asked to withdraw from CCA

• A “JUG” will result in manual labour for 1 – 4 hours after the school day. The “JUG” will be served on school property or if applicable within the community as a community service. In the case a student hav-ing to serve more than 2 hours the time will be divided into two segments and serve in two consecutive weeks.

• All “Jugs” will normally be served on Wednesdays or Thursdays of each week.

• If a “Jug” is not served within one week of getting the jug an in-school suspension may occur.

• If an in-school suspension is not served the student will be expelled from school.

• Amount of hours will normally be determined by the grade level which the student is enrolled in.Prep – 1 hour1st Form – 1 hour2nd Form – 2 hours3rd Form – 3 hours divided by a 2 hour and one hour segments

4th Form – 4 hours divided by two 2 hour segments

• Parents or legal guardians will be notified when every 5 demerits are earned via written notice sent with their child.

• At 15 demerits for a Prep, First, Second Form and Third Form the student will be placed on a one week in-school suspension and will be required to go before the discipline hearing committee along with their parent. Student will be required to meet with school Chaplin a minimum of 3 times at the Chaplin’s convenience.

• At 25 demerits for a Prep, First, Second Form and Third Form a written notice to parent will be sent home via student.

• At 30 demerits for a Prep, First, Second Form and Third Form the student will be expelled.

• At 10 demerits for a Fourth Form Student the student will be will be required to go before the discipline hearing committee along with their parent.

• At 15 demerits a Fourth Form Student will be expelled from school.• In extra-ordinary disciplinary situations a student may be subject to a 3-day in-school suspension.

• An in-school suspension will result in manual labor for 1 week during the school hours on the school property or if applicable within the community as a community service.

• Parental supervision during the in-school suspension may be required. • A parental conference will be required before the student is readmitted to classes. • Time missed will have to be made up.• Students refusing to co-operate may earn extra time.

• After the in-school suspension is served and a parental conference has occurred the student will be re-admitted to classes and given a second and final demerit card.

• If the Suspension card is filled the student will be subject to expulsion from school.

• All homework given during an in-school suspension must be completed as the teacher requires. Tests will be made up the following week of suspension. It is the Student’s the responsibility to find out about homework assignments.
