Texas-Tuscan style draws from the old-world look of Italian vineyards, villas and farmhouses but adds the drama and scale for which the state of Texas is known. Decorating in this hybrid aesthetic does not have to involve renovating your entire home. Instead, use samples of favorite features in the rustic design tradition and combine them with a bold, earthy aesthetic. Texas-Tuscan decor blends well with primitive, western, lodge, bohemian modern, farmhouse, southwestern, Mexican hacienda and country decorating schemes

Large-scale architectural elements set the tone. To go for a totally Texas-Tuscan redesign, consider a iron gate at the entry. Try keeping natural materials unpolished and unpainted for an earthy look. A stone wall, exposed brick, wooden wall posts or ceiling beams looks more old-world Tuscan with a natural finish. Subtly brighten surfaces without smoothing over their rough textures with a thin coat of milk paint in cream, pale yellow, stone gray or a faded earth tone.

But this is Texas, so integrate bits of shine and glam. Bottle green or cobalt glass tile, wall murals of landscape scenes or fresco-like faux finishes on interior walls add a touch of showmanship.

Accessorize with prominent pieces and natural elements. Continue the theme of blending indoors and outdoors by framing windows and doors with hanging plants, window boxes or vases filled with wildflowers. Large woolen rugs in reds, browns, oranges and deep blues bridge the palettes of the traditional west and Tuscany.

If you think estate sales and small town antique stores are full of old junk and aren’t worth your time, you might be missing out on a treasure trove of antiques and collectibles. For Gregg Harrison, a local attorney and Coles resident, some of the treasures he finds decorate his home, while others makes him a profit when he refurbishes and sells them.“I grew up in the New York City area and my mom was an interior designer,” said Gregg. “We would always end up in warehouses, wholesale districts, furniture showrooms, and sample sales, throughout my childhood; she was always redecorating or re-doing something in the house. There were always tile or wood scraps or paint cans in the garage from a recent project. I guess it rubbed off on me. I’ve been collecting and going to auctions, estate sales and flea markets since right out of college” he elaborated. “I always remember my mom’s friends asking her advice for furniture, accessories and colors…now my friends do the same thing to me…” Gregg laughs as he pushes things out of the way as we wander through his garage where he stores items he is restoring. “My friends call this the warehouse,” as he points out three different lighting fixtures hanging from the ceiling. “I always have someone calling asking what I have that they can use for their own homes, “ he continues. “You should be here when we do the annual Coles Crossing Garage Sale. People line up early to see what I have for sale each year.”With all Gregg’s experience in finding beautiful quality antiques there is one general rule he imparted that I find especially important for those of us who might want to

AUCTIONING – · Visit numerous auctions and see how items are bid on and for how much they are selling. In other words, at first - just go, watch and observe the auction process. Each auction is different and sometimes the crowd can seem overwhelming and intimidating. · Don’t bid on something unless you know how much you want to pay for it. If you go in blind with a credit card or check – it is easy to get caught up in the bidding – and you can easily overpay ! Remember – once you bid – you bought it!· Always attend the ‘preview’ portion of the sale – most auctions sell items ‘as is/final sale’ and you always want to inspect a piece before it goes up for auction. You cannot examine a piece when it is on the auction stand.· Find out what the ‘premium’ percentage is at the auction house – this adds money to your purchase so be aware. The percentage is usually 10-20% of the purchase price.· Know what you are bidding on and buying before you raise your paddle!!! Do your research!

A zebra skin: fiesta dinnerware; antique books; a fencing set: all mix to form an alluring, decorative impact in Gregg Harrison’s home.

When Old is Better Than New

dabble at finding our own treasures: “Only buy if you can re-sell the item for the same price you paid.” Along with that rule, he shared with me some ways to begin treasure hunting for antiques that anyone can use. Some of Gregg’s tips:

FLEA MARKETS/ANTIQUE STORES – This is a fun but tiring process and you have to wear your comfortable walking shoes to make a day of it. There are tons of antique stores throughout Houston and, of course, Texas! The Heights has great stores. Round-Top (twice a year) is a great place – but be ready to walk for hours and bring a truck. Every antique store or flea market has something of value in it and sometimes it is marked at a reasonable price. My general rule is “everything is negotiable” - always make an offer less than what it is marked. Sometimes you just have to search under piles of antiques to find your particular treasure.

ESTATE SALES – These are random sales all year round at private houses. The crowds can be aggressive and are lined up before the doors open. I have seen everything from: valuable paintings, to sterling silver, to Lalique crystal, to animal mounts at estate sales – The thing is - you never know what you are going to find! Some homes are packed to the brim and it takes an estate sale ‘crowd’ to dismantle it! These sales can be a lot of work – but it is hard to walk away from an estate sale empty handed! · Only buy something that you enjoy and can see in your own home· Set a limit of spending at an auction sale· Never buy a piece that is still mass-manufactured or sold in today’s (current) stores· Research an artist in depth before buying a valuable piece of art.

What Gregg has excelled in is recycling. He has rescued antique items from demolition and reclaimed them to bring a dramatic change to the rooms of his home. Using his skills to personalize his home, he has also added the element of fun to finding his personal treasures.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is an after-school program that is new to the Cypress area. Ashley Bass brought GOTR to the Coles Crossing neighborhood in fall 2010 and had a team of 24 girls. The program has already grown to two teams for the spring 2011 season - serving 36 girls in Coles Crossing.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is an international after school program for girls in 3rd - 5th grade that uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being girls. The program focuses on building self-esteem and improving emotional and physical health. During the 11-week program, girls are empowered with a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, happy and self-confident young women. Each session is led by trained female coaches who guide and mentor girls through a fun and uplifting curriculum. Coaches teach specific life lessons such as dealing with body image and the

media, resisting peer-pressure, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community. Along the way, the girls train together to run in a 5K (3.1 mile) event.Molly Barker is the Founder of Girls on the Run. In 1996 she piloted the earliest version of the 24-lesson curriculum with 13 brave girls in Charlotte, NC. 26 girls came the next season, then 75, and so the program grew. In 2000, Girls on the Run International became a 501c3 non-profit organization. To date, more than a quarter million girls age eight to thirteen years old have participated in this life-changing, experiential learning program - and enrollment is still growing. Today, there are Girls on the Run programs in 169 cities across North America, with over 62,000 girls and 33,000 volunteers participating each year. Girls on the Run was started here in Houston in 2003. This spring there are 11 programs in Greater Houston - and we are anticipating a 20% growth for fall 2011.

Our end of the season 5K race (for all Greater Houston GOTR participants) will be on Saturday, May 14, 2011 - this race will be open to the public as it is the largest fundraiser for Girls on the Run Greater Houston. Please check our website for more information - our race information and registration will also be found on active.com

If you are interested in getting involved with Girls on the Run of Greater Houston there is always a spot for you! You could volunteer at the race, volunteer to be a running buddy for a current participant, or you could start new site at your local school, church, or neighborhood. Roadside BouquetsWild flower bouquets can be amazing elements of interior floral decoration, be it for your home or for a special occasion. They are a harmonious bend of color and form, with their predominantly bright colors and blossoms, that vary from large to small.

When these wild flowers are arranged into a creative assortment, their beauty is enhanced to breathtaking heights. To make a simple yet stunning wild flower bouquet, the flowers should be cut to a desired height of various lengths. The larger flowers should be placed first, and the smaller wild flower blossoms should be arranged around them. Fillers like foliage, stalks and stems can be added in the end.

Easy wildflowers to find in this area are: Black-eyed Susan, Indian Paint Brush, Coneflower, White Prickly Poppy, Bluebonnet, Daisy, Buttercups, Crimson Clover, Texas Dandelion, and Yellow Thistle.

These little Oreo eggs are just too easy-- and they taste incredible. If your family loves Oreo cookies, there’s no way you can go wrong with this Easter candy recipe. For Easter, shape the Oreo truffles into cute little eggs instead of balls, and add pastel-colored white chocolate to the outside. Easy, cute, and impressive.

Recipe makes about 30 eggs, depending on size.

1 (1 lb.) pkg. Oreo cookies (don’t use double-stuffed) 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, at room temperature 1 tsp. vanilla extract 16 oz. white chocolate almond bark Food coloring of your choice, as needed (optional)

Instructions: 1. Break Oreos slightly and add them, cream and all, to a food processor or blender. 2. Grind until Oreo crumbs resemble something like coarse coffee grinds. 3. Dump Oreo crumbs into a bowl and add cream cheese and vanilla. 4. With an electric mixer on medium speed, beat Oreo mixture until well mixed. You can also do this by hand. 5. Cover and refrigerate about 45 minutes to an hour. 6. With your hands, shape into small eggs (about 1 1/2” long). Place eggs on waxed paper and refrigerate another hour. 7. When ready to dip, melt your white chocolate bark. Add food coloring if and as desired (see note below for some great decorating ideas). 8. Spear each Oreo egg with a toothpick and dip in white chocolate. Allow the excess to drip away. Place gently on waxed paper. 9. Let sit 15-20 minutes to set. Decorate with drizzled chocolate as desired. Cover and store in the refrigerator until ready to eat. They taste even better the next day!

Hat EtiquetteDon't wear a hat wider than your shoulders. Don't wear a hat that is darker than your shoes. If your hat has feathers, make sure they are never bent or broken. Sequins don't look good in the daytime. Easter hats should be white, cream or pastel even if it's still cold outside. For a look that is both elaborate and damure, try a chapel veil.

Cypress may be a small town dwarfed by Houston, but Cypress Woods High School now sparkles with an awesome world-class sculpture, created by local Coles Crossing resident Shirley Skidmore. Installed just weeks ago, Shirley’s eight hundred pound bronze sculpture of a wild cat, the school mascot, is more than just a statue. It was the accumlation of study and determination to be one of the best at the lost wax process for bronze artwork.

For ten years Shirley was a typical stay-at-home mom. But she still felt that their was something more she wanted to create. “Clay was something that always fascinated me,” Shirley told me. “As a child, I couldn’t wait to sit in front of a bronze sculpture and marvel at the thought that someone could create

something so wonderful; that would last that long.”

With that yearning, Shirley decided to take a ceramics class at Lone Star College. “ People would come up to me and ask me how I did my pieces so quickly and how much training I had prior to attending the classes. I had never had any kind of training, and so my curiosity grew as to why people were in such disbelief.”

Her professor suggested that she enter an art show competition, where Shirley won first place in ceramics and the college purchased her first vessel. It was at that moment that she knew she could make something special, and the relationship between Shirley and her new found art grew more profound. “ I finally knew what I was born to do,” she said.

For the next three years she worked in clay where she perfected her craft and moved into sculpting. When she hear that Cypress Woods was looking for a professional to sculpt a large wild cat for the school, she applied to win the opportunity to create the statue. “ I had nothing to loose; and everything to gain.” Through hours, days and months of work, the bronze statue took shape. Now it is the pride of the school, with an official ceremony for the display before the end of this school year.

Shirley currently works on custom commissioned pieces for businesses, schools and churches. “There isn’t anything I won’t try to sculpt,” she said. Some of her work can be seen at The DaVinci Art Gallery in Tomball.

Spring is officially here, and the months of March and April are ideal times to get out and work in the yard. Whether you maintain your own landscape or have a yard maintenance service, these tips will help you maintain an attractive, healthy landscape to enjoy for months to come.

If you have not done so already, have the soil tested by a reputable soil testing laboratory as soon as possible. Results will usually take about 7-10 days depending on the laboratory workload. Apply fertilizer according to the soil test recommendations. Remember to water the fertilizer in well. Avoid weed and feed type products around flowerbeds, trees and other susceptible plants.

Prune back any dead wood or vegetation to allow for new growth, and apply mulch to about 3 inches deep. Avoid piling mulch around tree trunks, do not prune plants back more than 1/3 of their size, and keep string trimmers back from around any plant trunk or base. It is best management practice to water deeply and infrequently during dry conditions.

Mow the lawn at the proper height according to the type of grass, and make sure the lawnmower blades are sharp. If insects, diseases, or weeds become a problem use pesticides sparingly and carefully, and always follow the label instructions accordingly. Most pesticides are available at local lawn and garden stores and feed stores. There are a lot of good sources of information out there, but make sure it is from a university or other reputable source and relative to your area.

From rustic to prestigious, a subdivision’s name can be a question without an answer

With subdivisions spreading faster than pink eye at a preschool, the names that developers give these subdivisions links their residents to a label. For years, subdivisions were tagged for the farmers who had worked the land. So, it was with that thought, that I began to wonder if a man named Cole used to own this land or if the name Coles Crossing had any historic meaning.

I began to ask around and found that the developers of Coles Crossing chose the name without any thought to a farmer or history. The name had just won the drawing out of a hat. But then, as I dug deeper, a strange story began to emerge.

The land that is now Coles Crossing began as the Bodin Land Grant. The grant was given to a man named Bodin in 1838. Butting up to this land was the Hamblin Land Grant and farm. There were very few families in Cypress at this time, and Texas had just won it’s freedom from Mexico.

The oldest family in the area were the Burnett’s who lived on Cypress Creek where Telge Park now sits. For a short time, the Burnett’s farm was a stop for the earliest Republic Post Office called Big Cypress. When Mr. Burnett died in 1842, the post office closed.

The center of Cypress moved to Burnett’s upstream neighbors, the Hamblins, who lived in the vicinity of today’s Randall’s on Barker Cypress. Here, they maintained a post office called Hamblin’s, until 1851. The 1850 Census

The Name Game - Coles Crossing

28 CC-Style Magazine | March - April 2011

Page 29: CC-Style

shows the Hamblins, and a Mr. Allard who ran an inn in this area. Also, in this group of the 1850 census residents, were the Coulters, the Chambers, and David Cole.

Who was David Cole? David became the first Post Master for the town of Cypress Top in 1851. This is the first mention of the formal name for Cypress Top in the records. Digging deeper into his life we find that he was born in Louisiana, but migrated to Texas around

1830. He was a war hero; in fact, he was one of the six men credited with the actual capture of Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. After being Post Master in Cypress, Mr. Cole was granted a pension of $100.00 per year. By 1861 he was living in Colorado County where he became a rancher, lost his sight and was killed by Indians in 1871.

I can’t say that the first actual Post Office was in Coles Crossing, furthermore, I have been told that the subdivision knew nothing about David Cole when the name was chosen. But it is a wild coincidence that 160 years ago, David Cole was here. It is another coincidence that the first post office may well have been located in or near Coles Crossing. We may never have all the answers, but to my mind, this makes Coles Crossing much more interesting than just a nice sounding name.

I would like to thank Cypress Historical Society for all their help and research for this story.

“A Taste of Louisiana” is this upcoming year’s festival theme beginning Friday, March 25th and ending Sunday, March 27th. Three days of fun, food, adventure, rides, live music, carnival games and support for our local businesses. Benefiting several area organizations, we look forward to Cy-Fest 2011 becoming a successful event and an annual tradition in our community.

Cy-Fest will be held on Old Hempstead Hwy between Spring Cypress Rd (behind the Target strip center) and Skinner Rd. Close to a half mile of road will be closed and fenced off to provide a “street festival” like atmosphere. The food vendors will highlight a gallery of Louisiana’s best and most traditional plates including Spicy Boiled Crawfish.

The festival kicks off on Friday night at 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm. Admission will be free. The gate opens at 10:00 am on Saturday. Admission will be $4 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under on both weekend days. Cy-Fest concludes on Sunday 11:00 am - 6:00 pm.
