CHILDREN'S CHURCH MAY 17, 2020 TODAY'S VERSE: 1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4 KEY PASSAGE For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. - 1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4 JESUS FORGIVES AND RESTORES Jesus forgave Peter and gave him a mission When Jesus first called the disciples to follow Him, Jesus had promised to make them fishers of men. Instead of catching fish, they would tell people about Jesus (Luke 5:1-11). Even though the disciples had left Jesus when He was arrested and even denied Him, Jesus still wanted to use them in God’s plan. Jesus showed Peter forgiveness and restored him in order to use Peter as a leader in the early church. Peter did not deserve to be forgiven—none of us do! But Jesus doesn’t forgive us based on what we deserve. Jesus forgives and restores people based on His love and the sacrifice He made on the cross to defeat sin. Jesus rose again to show that death had no power over Him, and that the way back to God was complete. Jesus is the Lord who forgives and makes things right again. When we trust in Jesus, we are forgiven and restored to God. He sends us the Holy Spirit to help us live holy lives and live on mission to tell others about Jesus! Big picture question: What is our mission as believers? Our mission as believers is to make disciples of all nations by the power of the Spirit.

Idea #1. "Jesus Forgives" CrossPrint out the cross template on this page. Then write the word“Forgiven” vertical on the cross. Then write the words “Your Sins”horizontally on the cross. The letter “R" in "Forgiven" and "Your"should overlap. Your cross will Say “Your Sins Forgiven.” Decoratethe cross with markers, crayons, or colored pencils. See example inthe links section on this page. Have fun!

Write different scenarios on fish-shaped cutouts and place a largepaper clip on it. Create a simple fishing pole with a dowelrod/straw (or anything you have at home), string, and a magnettied to the end. Guide your kiddo to “fish” for a situation. Whenthey catch a fish, read what it says. Does your child think it wouldbe easy to forgive someone in that situation? Take time to discusswhy it’s easy or hard.

Situation suggestions:•Your family forgot your birthday. •Your friend didn’t keep a promise to you. •Your mom lost your favorite pair of socks. •Your brother/sister ate your dessert. •Someone took your Bible home by mistake. •A classmate made fun of you.

It can be hard to forgive others. Sometimes we may feel that noone could forgive us. It is a good thing Jesus isn’t like us. We cannever mess up so badly that Jesus stops loving us.
