Color Correction Filter Guide
The Simple Way to Select Photography Filters
Have you ever wondered which CC filter is the right one for you? Many photographers have seen swatch
books with samples of color correction filters and color effect gels, but have trouble understanding how
these filters translate in a photograph.
This guide it meant to take the guess work out of the filter selection process by giving you a visual
reference to color correction filters. If you’ve ever wondered what a ¼ CTO filter looks like vs ½ or full
CTO filter, then, this guide is created just for you.
How To Use The Guide
To the naked eye, all light appears the same but different types of light source, including the sun, give
off different levels of color temperatures. At times, certain types of lights require color correction, and
this is when CC filters come into play.
To create this guide, I used a Sekonic C-800 color temperature meter and measured the exact color of
my light source. Once I had the temperature of my light source, which was 5516 Kelvin, I set the white
balance on my Nikon Z7 to 5620K and used a Color Checker passport to make a custom camera profile.

The last step before taking my first image, was to get an exact light meter reading. I used the Sekonic L-
858D-U to read my light before adding any color correction filters. The exact light meter reading was
F/4.7 at 1/125th with an ISO of 400. I set my camera to f/4.5 @ 1/125th at ISO 400 and took the first
image for this guide. It is important to note that all exposures in this guide consistent for the entire
duration of this color correction filter guide. All images were shot at F4.5 @ 1/125th at ISO 400.
