Wellness Is this the way forward?By Matt Broadway-Horner

The traditions in mental health services has been to treat when the disaster happens or has happened and never on the prevention which seems strange when we pay attention to things when they begin to deteriorate like for example paint work on the house or oiling the gear shaft in the car. But with the mind, it gets left to the last minute and maybe this is because of the stigma that something so different from the peer experience may be viewed as crazy and some how defective and not able to function. But the truth is that when I look around, Is all as it seems or are we all trying to keep up appearances?

Foucault believed in a society where we all lived together and the strange parts of us make life interesting and add colour to our experience and celebrate it rather than dread it. The truth is we all need help at sometime and just like I notice that I need to touch up some paint work or oil the bike and help those items to last longer, maybe I need to pay attention to slight deterioration in the mind and focus on wellness and look at preventing the calamity, lets pause...and reboot and then there may be a chance of the mind lasting longer and developing resilience.

CBT Solutions for developing Resilience - Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Resilience

Resilience is the positive capacity/attitude to cope with stress and adverse life events. This attitude may result in a manner of coping in the individual “bouncing back” to a previous state of normal functioning, or using the experience of exposure to adversity to produce a “stoic effect” and function better than expected (much like an inoculation gives one the capacity to cope well with future exposure to disease). Resilience is most commonly understood as a process, and not a trait of an individual. More recently, there has also been evidence that resilience can indicate a capacity to resist a sharp decline in functioning even though a person temporarily appears to get worse. A child, for example, may do poorly during critical life transitions (like entering School) but experience problems that are less severe than would be expected given the many risks the child faces

The Body’s Stress Response

When you perceive a threat, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones rouse the body for emergency action.Your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, breath quickens, and your senses become sharper. These physical changes increase your strength and stamina, speed your reaction time, and enhance your focus – preparing you to either fight or flee from the danger at hand.

Pit stop....exerciseBy Matt Broadway-Horner

The anger 4 step is one that can help in the stickiest of situations. This is a useful exercise when used at the point of return. This is the point of control not the point of no return and the anger has swept you away.

Walk away is step one, this being an excuse you make to step out of the situation, giving the other person an option “ Can we discuss this later?’ and then get calm using the attentional training exercise

mentioned in the previous newsletter. Then rethink and ask yourself the following questions :Q Am I fostering the relationship by acting this way? and Q2 Do I have more than one option here? If the answer to those questions is no then go back and get calm until you are able to see the bigger picture.

Once achieved then step 4 is to go back to the situation/person and give a response. And you might find out that when some time has elapsed that the issue is not important anymore and decide that its a waste of time getting angry and may help to rebuild relationships.
