1| Page CBSE’s initiative towards Continuous Professional Development The Central Board of Secondary Education is committed to provide opportunities to teachers/ principals for continuous professional development. The Board advises the schools affiliated to it to facilitate one week’s training for all its teachers once every year in association with teacher training institutes recognized by the State or Central Government or the Board itself or the CBSE Centres of Excellence (Rule 3.3-vi, Affiliation Bye-laws). One of the major objectives of the Academic, Research, Training and Innovation Unit of CBSE is to organize various capacity building and empowerment programmes to update the professional competency of teachers. The CBSE Training Cell has been working in consonance with the CBSE’s Centres of Excellence to meet this objective. A brief overview of the strategy and processes involved in this initiative is presented. 1. CBSE’s initiative towards Continuous Professional Development

The Central Board of Secondary Education is committed to provide opportunities to teachers/ principals for continuous professional development. The Board advises the schools affiliated to it to facilitate one week’s training for all its teachers once every year in association with teacher training institutes recognized by the State or Central Government or the Board itself or the CBSE Centres of Excellence (Rule 3.3-vi, Affiliation Bye-laws).

4. The Modality of Trainings at CBSE

The CBSE has been conducting trainings for the Principals, Teachers and Students through the following modes:

5 Present Programmes conducted by the COEs

• Capacity Building Programme for Teachers of English Core (Class XII)

The two day programme on Challenging Areas in teaching of English Core (Class XII) has been

developed for teachers to lend scaffold to teachers so that they are able to tackle the challenging areas in

English Core during classroom transaction. The programme is comprehensive in nature and discusses

numerous strategies for teaching different genres of literature and skills along with some hands on

activities.

• Capacity Building Programme for Teachers of Mathematics (Class X)

The two day programme for Mathematics teachers (Class X) has been developed to orient teachers to

current pedagogical issues and concerns in teaching of Mathematics. This programme has interactive

learning sessions that would equip Mathematics teachers to frame learning objectives, to design

instructional strategies that cater to diverse learners, create gender equitable environment in the

classrooms, recognize the common errors committed by students and assess learners in a holistic manner.

• Capacity Building Programme for Teachers of Social Science (Class X)

The two day programme for Social Science teachers (Class X) has been developed to equip teachers to

deliberate upon the challenge of teaching Social Sciences in the present scenario. The programme

highlights the importance of teaching Social Science through an interdisciplinary approach and includes

interactive sessions on lesson planning, effective instructional strategies, assessment and framing of test

items among others.

• Training Programme for Teachers of Assessment of Speaking and Learning Skills

The one-day programme on Assessment of Speaking and Learning Skills is organized with the

purpose of building a country-wide team of potential Examiner Trainers (ASL-ETs who would be

responsible for cascading the assessment training to teachers of the schools affiliated to CBSE in India and

abroad.

• Training Programme on Gender Sensitization

The changing educational scenario demands young people to be equipped with skills and attitudes that

will help them to develop as more responsible, adaptable and humane members of the society. They are

expected to be sensitive towards diversity. In this regard, the Board has initiated a one day training

programme for Gender Sensitive Pedagogy with the purpose to provide guidelines for being

responsive towards gender with reference to the education sector. It includes sessions on teaching through

a gender sensitive pedagogy, using gender sensitive teaching learning materials, creating a gender

sensitive classroom environment among other measures.

• Training Programme on Co-scholastic Areas

The two-day programme for teachers on Co-scholastic areas of Continuous and Comprehensive

Evaluation introduces participants to various co-scholastic areas of CCE familiarizing them with life

skills through activities, tools and techniques. It includes interactive sessions on values education, gender

sensitivity, awareness of health and physical well-being.

• Training Programme on Scholastic Areas

The two-day programme for teachers on Scholastic areas of Continuous and Comprehensive

Evaluation introduces participants to the concept of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation and

familiarizes them with the concept, features and tools for both formative and summative assessments.

• Training Programme on ICT Skills in collaboration with Oracle

Today the teachers need to be equipped with ICT skills so as to prepare them for the world of work. The

Board in collaboration with Oracle conducts a two day training programmes on ICT skills for teachers

so that they are able to infuse ICT into the transaction of curriculum.

• Training Programme on Cyber Safety

The two day programme on Staying Safe Online is being organized by the Cybersecurity Education and

Research Centre (CERC), Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi for CBSE teachers.

This programme aims at acquainting the participants with the basics of cyber safety including sessions on

different social media, threats that they pose to students as well as teachers and strategies to protect

students and their parents from such threats. It also orients the participants to the Facebook and Twitter

Help Centre.

• Training Programme on Life Skills

The one day programme on Life Skills has been developed for perspective building in life skills. It aims

at preparing the participants to transact life skills in the classroom by familiarising them with different life

skills and their assessment.

• Training Programme on Inclusion and Inclusive Strategies

The two-day programme on Inclusion and Inclusive Strategies for teachers creates awareness about

the needs of differently abled children, prompting them to reflect on their attitude and knowledge of issues

related to Children with Special Needs (CWSN) and preparing them with practical inclusion strategies.

Besides this, provisions, exceptions and certification for CWSN are also discussed in detail in this

programme.

• Training Programme on Classroom Management

The two-day programme on Classroom Management for teachers focuses upon managing the

classroom. It familiarizes the participants with managerial skills, techniques and effective strategies

enabling them to analyze their teaching style and strengthen it further to effectively manage large classes.

• Training Programme on Library and Information Sciences

The one day programme on Library and Information Sciences aims to orient the teachers to

effectively transact this subject by introducing them to effective pedagogies suitable for the subject and

assessment.

• Training Programme on Theatre Studies

The two-day programme on Theatre Studies aims to orient the teachers to effectively transact the

subject by introducing them to effective pedagogies and assessment strategies.

7. Mode of Registration

The registration for the training programmes may be done through the CBSE ‘Capacity Building Programme Micro Website’ within the CBSE Academics Website (http://cbseacademic.in). The schedule of different training programmes by CBSE will be uploaded on this website. Participants may register for the training programmes and pay the training fee online (net banking/e-challan/debit card).

Alternatively, the registration can be done offline too (through emails and telephonic confirmations) by contacting the concerned Centre of Excellence.
