CBS research focuses on three functional domains that contribute to the strategic focal points of novel product discovery, medical mycology and bioinformatics

6

2

Core activities: Research

The research focus for CBS distinguishes between an overarching strategic focus on specific, strategically important topics and a functional focus on the general research domains the CBS is specialized in

Strategic focus

Novel product discovery is about identifying fungal species with specific properties that make them potentially useful in drug development, enzyme discovery etc.

Medical mycology is focused on the characterization and early detection of potential harmful fungal pathogens to humans and animals, their fungal properties, dispersal and infection.

Bioinformatics encompasses the generation, storage and analysis of (meta)data on fungal strains to accurately describe fungi, identify patterns and map their (genetic) characteristics.

Functional focus

The functional focus of CBS research is on three domains delimited primarily by the fungal species that present themselves in them (agriculture, health and industry). Where they overlap, existing knowledge and data from one domain can prove useful to research in another.

The CBS collection focusses primarily on fungi that have been subject to publishing, reference strains and type strains

7

3

Core activities: Collection - fungi

CBS collection focus

The CBS fungal collection focus is determined primarily by its acquisition focus, defined by both active acquisition (actively pursued by the collection curator) and reactive acquisition (based on material offered to CBS by third parties)

Proactive acquisition of new strainsa) Strains that have been subject to publishing by CBS or third parties

b) Reference strains used in quality control

c) Type strains of new species

Reactive acquisition of new strains (where offered and dependent on capacity)a) Strains of fungal species that are new to the collection or to the known

biodiversity (maximize type strains)b) Multiple strains per species when important to CBS research projects and/or

market demand

Included in focus Not included in focus

Relevant to CBS or third party research Bacteria*

Genome-sequenced strains Non-culturable strains

*Bacteria are not part of the focus of the CBS collection, a number of actions will be initiated to determine the future of the bacterial collection (see strategic roadmap)
