Prevention & Community Education Programs February 2013

CBI and Mesa Prevention Alliance Staff attended the CADCA Leadership Conference in Washington, DC on February 7-10th

. The conference held workshops that educated coalitions on policy, advocacy, prevention strategies and new data on substance abuse/drugs. Our team was fortunate to meet with Congressman Matt Salmon and introduced the Alliance’s activities in Mesa. The congressman offered to assist the Alliance in any capacity and gave his full support of our initiatives. Our continuation application for year 5 of our Drug Free Communities funding was submitted on February 28

th. Our outcomes report

submitted for this application highlights that the Mesa Prevention Alliance has reached more than one million people since 2008. Marketing efforts for the “Protect. Don’t Provide” underage drinking campaign have launched on local Channel 11, newspapers, movie theatres, online advertising outlets, and city water bills. We are also actively engaging members in developing our annual strategic plan for the upcoming 2013-2014 fiscal year.

Community Education CBI provides community education and training for emergency responders, community partners, law enforcement, schools and the criminal justice system. The focus of our workshops presented an overview of agency services, signs and symptoms of drug use and emerging drug trends.

The following Education & Training workshops were provided during the month of February:

35 Magellan health providers learned about drug trends including synthetic drugs, Rx pills, heroin, alcohol, etc. and prevention resources at a Magellan training on

Tuesday, February 5th

35 Sunnyslope HS students in fire science class learned about synthetic drugs such as bath salts and spice and the harmful effects, and resources at a training on

Wednesday, February 6th

62 Daisy Mountain (Anthem) Fire learned about synthetic drugs: spice and bath salts, the symptoms to look for, the lasting effects and resources for help at a continuing

education class on February 8th and 13

th.

75 ASU students learned about synthetic drugs such as bath salts and spice and the harmful effects, and resources at a training on Thursday, February 14th

12 FRC family members learned about drug trends including synthetic drugs, Rx pills, heroin, alcohol, etc. and prevention resources at a Magellan training on

Wednesday, February 20th

Arizona Gives Day is a day for Arizonans to come together to make donations to as many nonprofits as possible in 24 hours. On March 20,

2013, from 12:00 am to 11:59 pm, supporters of Arizona nonprofits will go online, connect with causes they care about, and make tax-deductible

donations. CBI will promote Center for Hope programs that promote our services and impact in the community. Donating is easy and directly

supports families receiving services at Center for Hope. Please join us in spreading the word about this wonderful opportunity to GIVE.

CBI recently received a donation from the Enterprise Holdings Foundation to help support the replacement of infant cribs at Center for Hope. We were

successful in securing a $1,500 donation and look forward to new opportunities to partner in the future and we are grateful for their support of this

project.

Project H3 VETS is a collaborative effort to permanently house chronically homeless Veterans living on the streets of Phoenix. During the

month of February, all of the incredible partners in this effort celebrated the sweetness of our 100th Veteran moving home on February 14

th.

This partnership works- Thanks to the Arizona Coalition to End Homelessness, AZ Department of Veteran Services, Community Bridges, VA

case management, City of Phoenix (Mayor Greg Stanton in photo), ABC, and Native American Connections at their new complex- Encanto

Point.
