Foundation Portfolio in Media
50% of your AS media grade requires you to complete the
following set brief. Your summer homework is there to prepare you
for this work.
Print Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation
program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine,
featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some
appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates
must produce a DTP mock-up of the layout of the contents page to
demonstrate their grasp of the program.
Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a
new music magazine.All images and text used must be original,
produced by the candidate, minimum of FOUR images per
candidate.
Task 1:1) Set up a blog using Blogger. You will need a Google
account for this. Your blog address should

2) Add the following gadgets to your blog (as a
minimum):LabelsBlog listLink to the teacher blog
(ghostasmedia.blogspot.co.uk)
3) Set up accounts in the following:Scribd to embed text
documentsSlideshare to embed PPT documentsFlikr to embed image
galleries and slideshowsGoogle Drive used to share files in and out
of schoolSoundcloud useful for some of your presentations
4) Customise your blog. You wont have time to do this as we
progress through your coursework so use the summer to prettify your
blog and make it your own. BUT remember it will be seen by the
examiner so professionalism is key.
Any work you produce will be uploaded and marked by your
teachers on your blogs. You should upload your summer homework to
your blog in time for the new term to begin.
Task 2: Research 10 examples of each of the following types of
magazine. Try and think outside of the box and look at different
target audiences in each category. Fashion Music Sport
You should find copies of front covers for each magazine and
paste these into a Word document. Save the document or convert it
to a PDF and upload it to Scribd. Use the embed code from Scribd to
paste into the HTML view of your blog post in Blogger.
Make sure you add a label to your blog post this makes it easier
for the examiner to search for your work.
Task 3: Read one of the following types of magazine and complete
a case study on it. Fashion Music Sport
Things you must write about: The magazine type and what features
appear in it Analysis of the front cover of the magazine to
include: Standard magazine front cover features (masthead, cover
lines, etc). Artists featured Colours used Language used Styling of
main artists (clothing, make up, etc) Body positioning Font types
and sizes C, T or F theory layout (youll need to research this)
Which production houses publish the magazine, how often, and for
how much Which audience the magazine is aimed at and how you can
tell this
