    1. Course Aims:

    This course aims to

    Provide knowledge about the foundations of information management using

    business information systems;

    Equip students with the essential skills to use decision support and business

    intelligence tools in todays business world;

    Explain business information systems relevant to their professional career in HongKong and globally.

    3. Teaching and learning Activities (TLAs)(designed to facilitate students achievement of the CILOs)

    Lecture: 26 hours

    Laboratory: 13 hours

    TLA1: Lecture

    Concepts and general knowledge of information systems are explained.

    In-class discussion: Students participate in discussions in lectures (e.g. face-

    to-face discussion, using mobile devices) and the lecturer provides feedback

    based on students response.

    Concept map: The lecturer uses concept maps to conceptualize presented

    materials.

    Recap: In the beginning of every lecture, the lecturer will summarize the

    topics covered in the previous lecture and provide feedback based on

    students concerns and questions.

    TLA2: Computer Lab Tutorial

    The tutorial covers the technical aspects of various information management

    tools and decision support modules/systems.

    Computer lab exercises: e.g. hands-on activities on information management

    tools for decision making.

    Case/Group project discussion: Students will be given a real-life

    information management business case that will be used for small

    assignments, and for a semester individual project. The semester project willinvolve applying strategic information management and business skills to

    make a case for a newly proposed mobile application by each student. The

    project is designed to leverage and review the key course concepts in a real-

    world setting.

    TLA3: Outside classroom activities

    Additional help provided outside official class time.

    Online Helpdesk : An online system to provide extra help to students having

    difficulties with the course outside the classroom. During the assigned

    periods, students can raise their questions about the mid-term test and final

    examination in the online system. The tutors will answer their questions in

    office-hour for one week before the test and exam.

    4. Assessment Tasks/Activities(designed to assess how well the students achieve the CILOs)

    AT1: Participation (10%)

    10% is given for students participation in terms of quality of questions, answersand student engagement in both lectures and tutorials throughout the semester.

    AT2: Individual Project (30%)

    The individual project involves a written formal business case on a newly

    proposed mobile application, along with associated business plan. The quality of

    written English will account for a total of 5% of the 30% grade contribution.

    AT3: Homework and Reading Quizzes (20%)

    To ensure reinforcement of reading, lecture, and tutorials various homework

    assignments and in-class and out-of class quizzes will be used throughout the

    system. These are designed to gauge the students grasp on managementinformation systems concepts and knowledge, as well as the ability to apply

    them to solve business problems in various situations.

    AT4: Final Examination (40%, one 2-hour exam)

    The examination is designed to gauge the students grasp on management

    information systems concepts and knowledge, as well as the ability to apply

    them to solve business problems in various situations.
