The Unsung Heroes in Blue I am often asked the question, “Who are the

guys in the blue shirts that I see around the property?” The answer is; they are the facility maintenance staff personnel and should not be confused with some

of the Golf Club employees that also wear blue. The HOA crew consists of 6 men and they work under

the supervision of your Facility Manager, Mr. Stoney Amerine. Richard Lopez is the crew’s lead tech and has been with Corte Bella over ten years now. Richard has become quite a skilled asset to the team and community. Richard sets the standard for his fellow workers when it comes to dedication to the community and performing his duties.

Under the leadership of Mr. Amerine, the crew has taken on more and more reducing the need for outside contracted vendors which typically cost the association much more than on-site labor. These guys do everything from janitorial housekeeping of facilities to electrical and mechanical maintenance of facilities and equipment. Most of them start their day prior to 6 A.M. and cover every day of the week, Monday through Sunday. Some of them work into the evenings to support events or activities after 6 P.M. even on the weekends.

These guys all have different skill sets. They care for the pool and other water features like spas and fountains while keeping them flowing crystal clear. They travel around the community reloading doggie stations with bags and emptying trash containers at the pocket parks. Housekeeping functions include cleaning of locker rooms, showers, bathrooms, offices and restocking of supplies in those areas. Carpet and floor cleaning, sport court cleaning and sweeping, repair of equipment in all facilities including Fitness center/Spa, Anacapa and Social Hall. Maintaining the association owned lighting is also a time consumer as they change out bulbs, re-set timers, replace ballasts and repair broken fixtures.

Supporting events by operating Audio Visual systems and set-up and tear down of events is another major part of their responsibility. They work behind the scenes out of sight most of the time preparing facilities for your use and enjoyment while taking great pride in their work. The entire crew to the man understands their role and how important it is. They are dedicated to take care of every need even if it means coming in earlier, staying later or returning back to work in an emergency after hours. They press on in the summer heat, rain or even the occasional cold weather to accomplish whatever is put before them. Rarely do they require the closing of a facility to do what needs to be done as they adjust their schedule around those enjoying it. These men do an extremely necessary and important job for the community without much acknowledgement in most cases. As the General Manager, I understand them for what they do and how they do it and take this opportunity to thank them for the special consideration and effort that they put forth on a regular basis in service of Corte Bella.

The Corte Bella Country Club Association 2015 Organizational meeting was held 1 April 2015. Newly elected Director Donna Norton and returning Directors Walt Kearns, Larry Leighton

and Jim Williams were certified and seated. May I introduce your 2015 -

2016 Board of Directors pictured right. Elected Officer positions, and Liaison and Focal assignments covered at the meeting are also listed.

Your Board of Directors reaffirms its pledge, as your trusted agent, to continue

meeting our fiduciary responsibilities. The Board is taking on a number of new initiatives during 2015. We just completed our first annual GM performance evaluation – driven by the 2014 Governance Policy. This annual report is a needed component and tool to foster improvement of FSR’s on-site team and capabilities. A follow-on (to 2014) Operational Analysis will be completed in 2015 to evaluate staffing and facility needs in more detail. A Collections policy and process was approved in late February; Corporate Records and Communications policies with procedures are also planned for 2015. The Anacapa Business and Marketing plan will again be pursued - building on the framework that the team completed in 2014. Heeding the experience as garnered from other communities, a unified HOA Rules, Regulations and Procedures Manual will be developed.

The January 2015 CB Times Board Talk article provided a lot of detail on what is planned for 2015. I won’t repeat what was covered then; suffice it to say that the GM, Board and Committees, and other volunteers are working together to complete many important goals for the community, including a long term plan, an improved communication infrastructure and processes, improved traffic safety, improved general safety and security, an asset management system with a technology inventory, and more.

I feel confident that we will continue to meet community needs under your Vision “Corte Bella is committed to being a preferred active adult gated community providing lifestyle opportunities in a professionally managed, beautifully maintained environment”. You are, of course, always invited and welcome to help out any way you want – everything from volunteering for a committee, a project or a task, to simply providing constructive comments and suggestions.

CULINARY

May is always a month of transition for us at Corte Bella. We start heading into some warmer temperatures, residents start to take off to cooler climates, and Mother’s Day is our unofficial start date for our summer season. We want to thank all

our residents for their patronage; we’ve had a great season. We also look forward to transitioning to our summer menus, which will take place the end of May. Please look for these changes posted on the website and bulletin boards outside the restaurant.

We will have two big events in May with Mother’s Day Brunch, and our resident’s Memorial Day dinner-dance. Our last cooking demo will happen on May 1st, and will return in October with another series.

Poached Pear Salad with Brie and Raspberry VinaigrettePoached Pear Salad with Brie and Raspberry Vinaigrette• 2 cups sugar• 2 cups red wine• 4 cups water• ½ tsp cinnamon ground• 1 star anise• 2 pinches Allspice• 1 orange, halved• 4 small pears• Small non reactive 3 Qt. sauce pan• Small piece parchment paper

Add all ingredients into sauce pan.Peel pears, placing them into the poaching liquid - whole. Place parchment on top of water and place small plate that fits inside the pot on top to weight down the pears so they are submerged completely

On low heat, bring the poaching liquid to a simmer slowly. Let simmer slowly for 20 minutes. Remove weight and take a pear out of the liquid. Using a small knife, pierce the pear to the core. If it is tender all the way through, they are done. If there is still a lot of firmness, continue poaching until tender, another 10-15 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand for 15-20 minutes. Refrigerate pears in their liquid over night.Remove pears from liquid and cut in half. Using a knife or melon

baller, remove coreSlice into fans and set in refrigerator

for use on the salad.

Mike Wolfson - PM Line SupervisorIf you have ever delighted in the taste of the special sauces served at The Anacapa, then you have experienced the culinary mastery of Mike Wolfson. Mike has been at The Anacapa for almost six years, and is currently the PM Line Supervisor. Creating and making the sauces is just one of Mike’s many duties. Some of his other job functions include ordering produce, inventory control of all frozen

products, overseeing the sauté station, appearance presentation of all plates of food, and overall quality and consistency of food for the evening shift.

Mike has a very interesting background to say the least. He was born in Brazil and lived there until he was fourteen and then moved to the U.S. Mike’s father had a high profile job as the Head of Latin America for Exxon Oil. Mike attended Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and received his degree in International Banking. For those of you who may be a true Hoya or basketball fan, Mike had the opportunity to shake hands with Patrick Ewing. After spending seven years in International Banking, Mike decided to persue his true passion of culinary art. Traveling throughout Europe, he held various apprentice positions in the restaurants in Italy, France, Spain and Greece. Most recently, he completed a nine-month education course at the Arizona Culinary Institute.

Mike is married to his wife Karen who is a Pharmacist. The Wolfson house if filled with their four legged “kids”, (dogs) Freida, Diego, Tasha, Lexie, Binkley, Bianca, and (cats) Diva, Boris and Ivan. If you’ve been counting, that’s nine. In addition, Mike’s hobbies include competing in Triathlons, yes, swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and then just run 26.2 miles. He plays piano and guitar, enjoys photography, cycling, and reading anything about the culinary arts.

When asked “What do you like best about working at The Anacapa”?, Mike stated, “ I like the freedom Chef Dan Haywood gives me to be creative”. The next time you have dinner at The Anacapa, and the presentation, quality and taste surpass your expectations, you can sit back and savor every bite knowing that Mike Wolfson is just doing what he loves.

Stephanie Posey – Anacapa BartenderWhen ordering a drink at the Anacapa bar, chances are you were greeted with a warm friendly smile, called by your name and cheerfully asked, “What can I get for you?” Then, your drink(s) were timely prepared and mixed with perfection. Nothing to it…..right? Well, welcome to the work shift of Stephanie Posey, your Anacapa bartender.

Stephanie has worked at the Anacapa for just over five years. She started as the daytime hostess and held that position for almost two years. She then became a server and assisted with banquets. When a bartender left, Stephanie approached Food and Beverage Manager Fred Hernandez and shared her interest in becoming a bartender. With no previous training, Stephanie studied hard and mastered the craft.

Stephanie is one of the rare people you meet who actually grew up in the Phoenix area. Most of her life she spent on her parents farm in Laveen, AZ and her friends have given her the nickname of “Country”. Stephanie shared a little known secret about herself. When she was in 4H club she won a second place ribbon for her prize pig!

Stephanie attended Grand Canyon University for two years. She also coached girls Junior Varsity softball at Cactus High School. Her free time is spent with her best buddy, “Wrigley”, her Chihuahua. Her hobbies include playing sand volleyball on Sundays, going to movies and just hanging out with her friends.

When asked what she likes the best about working at the Anacapa, she paused for just a moment, smiled and said, “The members here are so nice. I feel they treat us as family”. So look for Stephanie at the bar Tuesday through Saturday nights, and you are sure to have your night brightened a little by having Stephanie take your order.

Wine Appreciation – A Self Discovery VoyageEuropeans and particularly Italians have been wine drinkers for centuries. During the Roman Empire wine was flowing from large jugs at any time of day, at least according to Hollywood pictures. But, truth be told, the Romans had an irrefutable success with grapes and thanks to their invention of glass blowing, the storing of wine went from clay vats, which eventually altered the flavor of wine, to a product guaranteed to maintain the original flavor and taste. In ancient Rome wine was very high in alcohol content and for that reason occasionally diluted with water, but however enjoyable, it was increasingly seen as a necessity, a dietary health component, if you will. As in present days, wine was served with every meal and was an essential element to one’s perfect food feast. Wine and ancient Rome has quite a history and maybe best explored in a separate article.

So, centuries later, how does one learn to appreciate the flavor of wine? For me it was a very slow process made easier by moving to Southern California in 1981. While the opportunity to explore many small non-commercial wineries was at hand in California, it also became very evident how much I did not know: about grapes, about wine in general, and about California wines altogether. My only wine experience came from my native Italy, and in those days I was drinking just like the Romans – fulfilling a dietary health component.

Thanks to the insights of a good friend who has lived in Southern California for the best part of her life, I was introduced to Zinfandel for the first time in the late eighties. Very few establishments

carried it in those days and one had to specify Red Zinfandel or you would otherwise be served the ever popular White Zinfandel. It was love at first sip for me, wonderfully fruity with very low tannins, and irresistible to this day. It was the best kept secret at least for a few years but inevitably it hit the market and is now widely known simply as Zin. Over the years an appreciation for wines became a journey of self discovery, not necessarily just a cultural predicament or an anecdote by many of our great ancestral writers, but a connection of all senses, a balance of heart and mind.

Many years later and present day Corte Bella, the Wine & Dine International interest group offers its members the opportunity to make that same journey, one event at the time. The concept of wine appreciation and discovery was the group’s clear focus from the very beginning, and food pairing continues to be a serious undertaking. At the beginning of March a Wine Tasting format gave us the opportunity to experience five “high end” Zin based Napa Valley wines, all of them the product of ancient vines. Australian, French and Italian wines will be featured in the next few months. In my experience, I feel it is important, when tasting wine, to immerse ourselves in the land it comes from, and discover the diversity of soils and climates which ultimately determines the characteristic of the grapes.

Well, whether you already enjoy a glass of wine for medicinal purposes or deem it a dietary necessity like the Romans, I can assure you it is worth taking the voyage of self discovery one sip at the time. Salute!

Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Thank-you!I want to start off this month by thanking Al Schroder, Dan Drogowski, Greg Zanowski, Alan Luher and Bill Blake for their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm and for their continuing contribution to our Community- and to NASC in particular. Several initiatives would never have been started, let alone been finished, if it had not been for these fine neighbors and volunteers.

Tim Norton was confirmed as the Vice-Chairman of the Committee at the March meeting. He will also be serving as Acting Chairman as we take steps to replace the volunteers who left the committee. I want to thank Tim, Barbara Drury, and Steve DeBoer (new members) as well as Ed Colihan and Tom Newman for stepping up and volunteering their time and effort to help make Corte Bella as safe and secure as we can.

January 7th Townhall Meeting on SecurityResidents have been talking about security for a long time, but we have had added emphasis since the few isolated incidents reported in January and March. The NASC sponsored a Townhall Meeting on Security in the Social Hall on January 7th where 58 separate questions, suggestions, and recommendations concerning our safety and security were brought up. The committee completed their review and analysis and briefed the BOD and those present at the April 15th and 22nd BOD meetings.

58 Items were addressed- 25 Items have procedures in place, no further action required- 12 items recommended for implementation- 3 items require further research- 18 items not recommended for implementation, no further action required

The spreadsheet listing all 58 items shown at the April BOD meeting, along with the presentation to the May Board meeting has been posted on the website under the NASC- Miscellaneous Documents.

The M & M IntersectionAnother issue that has been around for a seemingly long time was dubbed the “M&M Intersection” or “M&M issue”. In case

you are not familiar with this one, it concerns the intersection at N. Micheltorena Dr. and N. Mission Dr. Some residents living out in the western panhandle portion of our community identified an issue with speeding, improper turning, and the lack of a crosswalk at that location. The BOD hired a professional traffic engineering company to complete a Traffic Study on all intersections around the Mission/Carrera circle and Corte Bella Drive. They reviewed claims of excessive speed and poor operations along the “the panhandle” streets of Micheltorena Drive, Las Positas Drive, and Sola Drive. The study was completed in late March and the results briefed to the BOD at the April meetings. (This article is being written prior to that meeting so BOD decisions are not known at this time.) The NASC did recommend approving the Traffic Study report as written. Action items inlcude removing the stop sign on the eastbound Sola Drive approach to the Las Positas Drive intersection, adding cross-walks at the “M&M intersection” and the El Sueno Drive/ Carrera Drive intersection, improving the visibility of cross-walks, and trimming the landscaping around all of our intersections. The Traffic Study report and the NASC presentation are on the website under the NASC - Miscellaneous Documents.

Leaving for part or all of the “dry heat”?As you prepare to leave the “Jewel of the Northwest Valley”, don’t forget to update your information in the “Away from Home” section of the Resident and Visitor Management System (RVMS). It will only take a couple of minutes to fill out. Securitas will then know when you are away and they will include your home in the Vacation Home Inspections as they make their random roving patrols throughout Corte Bella. If you have any questions or problems with this form, please contact the HOA office for assistance.

Next NASC MeetingThe next NASC meeting will be held in the Bella Stanza Room at 9 AM on May 7th. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Financial Summary – Three Months Ended March 31, 2015 Results of OperationsFor the 3 month period ending March 31, 2015, excluding reserve contributions, we realized a net operating surplus of $118,000. This was $52,500 favorable compared to the budgeted surplus of $65,500. The March Financials were approved by the Finance Committee on April 23rd and will be presented to the Board at the May 20th meeting. Following is a brief discussion of departmental results and significant variances compared to budget:

Administration – $ 477,700 net surplus, $22,500 favorable – Delays in hiring a Board approved position and a vacancy in the HOA office resulted in favorable salary and wage and related employment costs. Legal, printing, postage and depreciation expenses were favorable, while contingency was unfavorable due to the engineering fees paid for the street safety study.

Facilities – $277,200 total expense, $7,100 favorable – Salaries & wages and related payroll costs were favorable due to the delay in hiring a Board approved position. Telephone, gas and building maintenance costs were over budget, while water and sewer costs were significantly favorable due to Jan-Feb rain and improved water management practices. A small benefit was realized on several residential water meters as a result of the rate reduction efforts of our Government Affairs Committee.

Guardhouse – $42,600 total expense, $5,200 favorable – Cost of gate repairs was significantly favorable to budget.

HOA Events – $4,300 surplus, $1,700 favorable – Revenue was significantly higher than budget due to a greater number of events, offset partially by additional entertainment related expense.

Landscape – $82,400 total expense, $11,300 favorable – Expenses associated with plant replacement and pest control were significantly favorable due to budget timing.

Restaurant – $54,000 surplus, $4,100 favorable – Overall revenue was favorable for food, beverages and banquet activity, offsetting expenses for unbudgeted promotional discounts. The cost and benefit of these discounts will continue to be under review. Expenses for food and beverages were 13% above budget in the 1st quarter due approximately 60% to volume and 40% to cost. Banquet equipment rental was favorable and operating supplies were somewhat unfavorable.

Spa – $5,800 surplus, $3,300 unfavorable – Overall income was on budget while laundry services and other miscellaneous expenses were unfavorable.

Fitness – $34,100 deficit, $3,900 favorable – Personal training

income was significantly favorable and most fitness center expense categories were under budget.

Paint Maintenance and Granite Replacement – $12,400 surplus, met budget. There was no activity for painting or granite replacement in the first quarter.

Reserve FundsRepair and replacement fund – The fund balance increased $97,000 from the 2014 year end amount. Minor funds were expended for social hall furniture related to the 2014 renovation and fountain repairs related to replacement of sand filters.

Capital projects – The fund balance increased $7,100 from the 2014 year end amount. Reserve fund fees from home re-sales, used to fund capital improvements, were $2,000 higher than budget. The only significant expenditure was the purchase of a golf utility cart for $10,000.

SummaryOverall, the first quarter financial results were quite favorable. The favorable operating variance of $52,500 was largely attributable to delays in hiring board approved positions, reduced water and sewer charges and budget timing for various landscaping and maintenance tasks. Our contingency account took a hit to fund the street safety study.

Our Reserves are starting to rebuild after the major projects last year for street repair and restaurant remodeling. On the horizon, we need to continue to be diligent on potential major pending expenditures for streets and fountains. Second engineering opinions on streets and fountain repair are pending.

Based on our reserve analysis and the related contribution rates, total reserve funds appear adequate to meet future repair and replacement requirements contingent on future requirement associated with street repairs. The Capital Improvement Fund also continues to grow as we add transfer fees from home sales to fund the account.

Our cash position is sufficient to meet our operating needs. From an investment standpoint, we continue to maintain our conservative investment strategy to minimize risk and ensure liquidity, while seeking yield improvement opportunities. We plan on proposing alternate investment scenarios to the Board to enhance returns, with minimum risk.

The four Bridge Clubs of the Sun Cities are uniting for the second annual “The Longest Day” to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association for research and care, announced Ellie Workman, Event Chair.

Each Club will make donation forms available at all bridge sessions over the next three months. The four Bridge Clubs of the Sun Cities include Sun City Duplicate Bridge, Kiva West Duplicate Bridge of Sun City West, Sun City Grand Bridge, and Corte Bella Bridge. Donations can be made through

The Longest Day campaign will culminate in a joint Sun Cities Bridge Clubs sanctioned ACBL Bridge Session on June 21, 2015 at the Lakeview Recreation Center, 10626 W. Thunderbird Blvd, at the corner of Thunderbird and Deb Webb Blvds., in Sun City.

Bridge players are invited to reserve their seats through your Sun Cities Bridge Club or contact Ellie Workman, 623-975-4069 to RSVP. All session fees will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. The game fee will be $5 per person. Registration will be from 1:00-1:20 P.M. The game will run from 1:30 to 5:00. Refreshments will be provided.

In addition to the funds raised at the games, the American Contract Bridge League is donating all of the table fees to the Alzheimer’s Association. The ACBL has joined with the Alzheimer’s Association in this annual fund raising event. Bridge clubs all across North America hold special games in support of this worthy endeavor on June 21.

Research has shown that mental activity, such as bridge, can play a role in reducing the effects of Alzheimer’s.

We have had a LOT of “Comings and Goings” since our last Kudos Korner in January!

Here goes! Several Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee (NASC) members have recently announced that they were leaving the NASC: Greg Zanowski (Feb.) Dan Drogowski and Al Schroeder (March) and Alan Luhr (April). Al has been a stalwart volunteer and the Committee Chair for over a year. Dan Drogowski has been a steadfast volunteer for six years and provided the impetus for many projects including our Visitor Control System, Speed Minder system and many safety related projects. Dan was Vice-Chair the last two years.

Government Affairs Committee (GAC) member Dawn Ferch and Finance Committee (FC) member Ed Dupke also left their positions in March/April. Dawn joined the GAC when it was formed in May 2013 and she was the focal for Transportation. Ed has been with the FC for about a year and was the Vice Chair.

Dan Drogowski also left the Buildings and Grounds Committee (B&G) after serving nearly two years. Al Schroeder also left the Architecture Review Committee (ARC). AL helped with

inspections, review of resident requests and workied on changes to the Design Guidelines.

Tim Norton recently joined the NASC and was selected Vice Chair (currently acting Chair) in March. Tim brings some 32 years of Highway Patrol and Phoenix Police Department experience. Ed Colihan re-joined the NASC and has picked up where he left off as camera and recording systems focal.

Paul Knowles, Tara McKowen and Tim Norton have recently joined ARC. Gene Stumvoll joined the B&G in February he and has a lot of construction and road experience. Jamie Lane, with diverse management, accounting and financial experience is the newest member to join the FC.

For all the committee volunteers who left - a genuine THANK YOU for your exceptional service. You have enhanced Corte Bella and we wish you all the best. Thanks also to the new volunteers for stepping forward to make Corte Bella the best it can be!

In a presentation ceremony held on April 7th, 2015 at the John J. Morris American Legion Post 62 in Peoria, AZ, Hugo Tringali was presented the Chevalier (Knight) of the National Order of the Legion of Honor by Mr. Gerritt M Steenblik, Honorary Consul of France in Arizona. “The government of France is

pleased to announce that the eight World War II veterans from Arizona were approved for the award” said Mr. Steenblik. The award is the highest honor France bestows on its citizens and foreign nationals.

The Master of Ceremonies was Mr. Bill Montgomery, Maricopa County Attorney and also in attendance was the Mayor of Peoria, Ms. Cathy Carlat.

Technician 5 Hugo A. Tringali served in World War II with the US Army as Artillery Combat with the 8th Infantry Division with service in France, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. His significant decorations include the Good Conduct Medal and EAME (European – African - Middle East) Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars. Hugo resides in Sun City West (Corte Bella), AZ with his wife, Elsy.

Guests of Hugo included his lovely wife Elsy; Corte Bella neighbors Dan and Mary Luparello; former neighbors Rick & Pat Szymura; Jack & Rachel Koennecker and Michael McVeigh. In a letter from Axel Cruau, Consul General of France, Mr. Cruau stated: “This award testifies to President Francois Hollande’s high esteem for the merits and accomplishments of these honorees. In particular, it is a sign of France’s infinite gratitude and appreciation for your personal and precious contribution to the United States’ decisive role in the liberation of France during World War II”.

The Legion of Honor was created by Napoleon in 1802 to acknowledge services rendered to France by people of exceptional merit. The French people will never forget your courage and your devotion to the great cause of freedom. “I’m so grateful, (but) all active service members share some part of this,” said Tringali.

Gerry Berger, Corte Bella resident and Commander of the American Legion Post 94 in Sun City West was recognized for her contributions in arranging the ceremony. All of us in Corte Bella thank Hugo for his honorable and distinguished service. McVeigh, Berger and Luparello are all members of the CB Vets group.

In the LoopSummer is coming. Have you had your air conditioners checked out before the season gets HOT to make sure everything is running properly? Waiting for days in the July heat for a repairman to show up would not sit well in the memory bank.

Are you leaving for the season or taking an extended vacation during the summer? If you don’t have a house sitter you may want to prep your house by leaving the air conditioner set somewhere in the mid-eighties rather than just let your house overheat. Know how you can tell when a hot water heater goes bad? You come home to find a river of water running through your garage. You may want to consider shutting off the water to the house when you leave or just shut off the water to the water heater. The heater can also be turned off completely or set down to the coolest setting.

Seal the toilets with clear wrap or something comparable so the water doesn’t evaporate, leaving behind the smell of eau de

sewer. Ask a neighbor to make sure there is no break in the irrigation lines, which could amount to wasting thousands of gallons of water if not repaired.

Please speak to the HOA office and put yourself on a vacation list. The security guards will inspect the outside of your house when they do their roving patrol.

Consumers Reports just rated supermarkets throughout the United States. Trader Joes was number 3, Costco number 6. Sprouts number 8 and WinCo number 11. WinCo is building a store just west of the 303 on the South side of Bell road. Sprouts is building a store at Lake Pleasant and Happy Valley in the now long deserted Best Buy store. Number one in the country is Wegmans but they are located in the Northeast so it’s not worth putting up with the winters just to shop there.

BitcoinAt the April meeting of the Computer Club we discussed the digital currency, Bitcoin. Understanding what Bitcoin is and how this monetary system relates to computers, is rather involved – hence, the need for a meeting completely devoted to it.

Here’s a one-paragraph, uber-short explanation for anyone who is unfamiliar with the product:

In 2008, an anonymous author using the pen name “Satoshi Nakamoto” published his concept for a digital, decentralized virtual currency and payment system. In 2009, the author followed up with the release of an open-source software to make his concept a reality. There are many facets of this system, but here are a couple of points to remember: (1) It uses cryptography to control its creation and transactions, thereby making its transactions anonymous, and (2) nobody owns the Bitcoin network, similar to how no one owns the technology behind email. There is no central repository or administrator. Bitcoin is controlled by the Bitcoin users around the world. It’s not reliant upon any country. Therefore, theoretically, it is not affected by what happens politically or economically to countries throughout the world.

Nakamoto’s concept and software went viral, and quickly attracted the attention of others who began making transactions. Since it is open-source, many others have jumped in to improve upon the software. Other third-party software developers have addressed needs not provided by the Bitcoin software itself, such as a “virtual wallet”. Merchants are rapidly adding Bitcoin

to their online methods of payment. As of the time of this writing, the value of all Bitcoins in circulation exceeds $3.5 billion, with millions of dollars of Bitcoins exchanged daily.

Bitcoin has had a bumpy ride to acceptance, and no one is entirely sure of its future. However, it is certainly innovative, and appears to be gradually evolving into an accepted concept. It’s not that far-fetched to say that it could be in some form the currency system of the future, so it’s probably good that we learn more about it.

Reverie on Corte BellaEmilie and I love living in Corte Bella. Every time we drive in, it’s like arriving at a resort, especially through the front gate. The February CB Times got me thinking about how people living here must be willing to give up some things and to put up with others.

But the same is true when vacationing at any wonderful resort or living in any fabulous neighborhood. The first thing we give up is choosing some other beautiful place. We also give up doing some things that we might like with our properties because of laws, rules, or neighbors’ opinions.

And we have to endure HOA fees, which are like taxes except that we don’t get to vote directly on whether to raise them. Then the house colors that may be too restrictive or too varied, depending on tastes. Next, the yard rules that won’t allow planting what you want where you want or require planting things you don’t want. Finally, for me, there are the neighbors reporting on neighbors for having a dead plant or a weed when (a very few) homes have been in terrible shape for years and when the common areas have weeds just like yours.

But—my goodness—just look at that puny list of complaints! If that’s the worst we have to put up with, we have no serious complaints. And we do have a governing system that we can work within to make changes to rules and to the governing system itself if we can persuade enough residents to agree.

Beyond that, we can complain. When we move here, we don’t surrender the ability to think or the right to have an opinion or to complain, even to the point of annoyance. But we could use an official “complaint forum” where we would be heard by people who are really listening.

Perhaps our board and committees would consider occasional meetings just for presenting our issues to have them recorded

and considered. Such forums might keep interruptions at regular board and committee meetings to a minimum.

And, ultimately, we can decide that Corte Bella is not for us. Most of us know of someone who has moved because another community was more to his or her liking. Wouldn’t the world be boring if everyone liked exactly the same things?

Those of us who are joiners will get together in social groups, working committees, or volunteer organizations that appeal to us. Then too, there’s always tennis, pickle ball, bocce ball, and the beautiful pool where we can brag about grandkids and where we went to eat last night. And I think it’s great to see your kids and grandkids at the pool and on the street, reminding me that I am still alive and have not yet quite gone to . . . heaven?

But some of us will keep to ourselves and simply marvel every time we drive in and think how lucky to have found a home in Corte Bella. Perhaps you can write a song about Corte Bella. My suggestion begins with . . .

Beautiful, beautiful Corte Bella Just like our own little town ‘Neath Anacapa’s lights On our merry nights Let us clink and drink one down

One little boy was very excited about his soccer ball Easter basket when he checked in, but when the time came to gather eggs, he was a little overwhelmed. Consequently, when the hunt was over he had one lonely egg in his basket. Luckily, he did manage to snag a gift basket that contained a squishy toy that he wanted, so was quite happy.

Afterwards, his family came to say thank you and told me that

another family had noticed the only egg that their great grandson had. They brought their children over to him, shared their eggs and also gave him an Easter present. Needless to say, that brought tears to my eyes! Let me say, “Thank you, Corte Bella”. That’s the true meaning of community and one of the main reasons that Corte Bella is such a great place to live. Blessings to all families who teach their children the meaning of sharing.

Corte Bella Women’s Golf Association played host to the first annual Can-Am Golf Tournament in February, a fun competition between Corte Bella friends and neighbors from Canada and the US. Wendy Trofimuk captained Team Canada while Shirley Herring led the US contingent.

The inaugural event included a “pairings party” to introduce the teams and distribute bandanas bearing the team national flags. As the rosters took shape, it became clear that Team Canada’s numbers needed supplementing so several US citizens became Honorary Canadians for a day. (Rumors that they received free health care for that day were not substantiated.)

Game day was only slightly influenced by cooler weather and as the competitors returned to the clubhouse and the match play results were posted, emotions ran high. In the end, Team Canada prevailed but it was agreed that everybody won! The tournament was followed by good food and drink and a commitment for next year’s event, likely in early March 2016.

Kudos to Captains Wendy and Shirley for their personal leadership and hard work. Special thanks to Adam Erspamer, Corte Bella’s head pro and his staff, who provided tremendous support to the tournament and also to Lisa Sanchez and her team in the Grill for the refreshments and food.Julie Waxham, John Waxham and Diana Pilson relax after

The Corte Bella Ladies 18 Hole Golf Association held their annual Club Championship event in March. The winner for 2015 is Fran Marsden.

“I have been very fortunate and also very honored to win a few club championships at Corte Bella. I won the Club Championship in 2011, 2012 and this year 2015. I was fortunate enough to also win the Senior Club Championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012,” Marsden said.

“There is a strong field of lady players at Corte Bella and when someone wins it is typically by slim margin! It has been my day a few times but it can be anybody’s game” she added.

Fran, from Alberta, Canada has been a golf enthusiast for many years. She commented that she does more work in building the game in Canada more than she actually plays the game. She is a member of the Rules and Championships committee in Alberta and on the Governors Council, Heritage Committee, Scholarships and University Grants Committees at Golf Canada.

“I was honored by my home province of Alberta in 2007 when I was elected to the Alberta Golf Hall of Fame with a Distinguished Service Award for my part in building the game in Alberta and in Canada”, she said proudly.

“Volunteerism has been one of the love’s of my life. You get so much more back in knowledge and in friendships than you actually put in. I can honestly say by playing golf and volunteering through golf, I have learned so much and have made friends throughout the world. What a great sport”, Marsden added.

In the golfing world, “The In Season” denotes the time frame from November through April where the West Valley is blessed with fantastic weather and moderate temperatures - both of which attract an influx of Snowbirds who descend to the Valley from our northern states and Canada.

However, CB Golf Club is open 7 days a week, all year long! So what happens in during “The Off Season?” …….…..A lot!

The spring and summer golfing months offer our patrons more of a laid-back feel. It’s a great time to come over and discover our golf course and try your hand at the game of golf. Come experience what all the hubbub is about - without any pressure.

Current membership in our Pickleball Club : 120!

We had a great spring season, with increased membership and participation in this fun sport. Dozens of people have come out for our monthly clinics, and many are now part of the club.

There was a lot of participation in local tournaments. At our “end of season” morning breakfast party at the courts, there were more than 50 people - see photos.

Now the temps are heating up, and some of our club members are heading north for the summer - enjoy! It is interesting that a lot of our members have found places to play pickleball at their summer residences, both indoors and outdoors. Fastest growing sport in America!

But there is still a very active group out on the courts.

• Club member play now starts every morning except Sunday at 7:00 a.m. Remember that we have courts designated for both novice and intermediate players, so everyone can join in.

• Who or what is a Simon? Club members are very excited to have our own ball machine specifically for pickleballs. You can set the height of the ball trajectory, the force, plus the length of time between balls. Great to practice any kind of shot. Simon is stored in a locked box next to the pickleball courts. We ask that you get a short tutorial on how the machine works before trying it out.

Corte Bella is fortunate to have residents who represent Corte Bella while competing against other tennis players from the West Valley. Please find recaps from the captains of Corte Bella’s own 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 teams.

The Las Raquettes, 3.0 Team, by Donna Norton, CaptainNurys awoke to another early Thursday morning to put on layers of clothing to hit the ball with her friends on the 3.0 team just as the sun was rising. She saw her breath in the morning cold and made mention that this was “insanity,” but it was what she was ready to do in preparation for the season ahead. Fortunately, practices moved to the afternoon and the sun shone brightly as the team got underway with another season of winning tennis. The 3.0 ladies finished in first place for a second consecutive year in the West Valley Senior Women’s Tennis League.

The West Valley Senior Women’s Tennis League was started by two gals in Sun City West who saw a need and filled the void, allowing different residential neighborhoods to compete with each other every week beginning in October and ending in March of the following year. The cost is $8 and goes towards a luncheon and trophies for the winning teams. We welcome anyone who might be interested in playing on our team. The Corte Bellas, 3.5 Team, by Linda Sivakoff, CaptainThe Corte Bella ladies 3.5 tennis team participates in the West Valley Senior Women’s Tennis League with 9 other teams. Their matches are played from mid-October until early March each year, with 3 courts playing doubles tennis at each match. Matches are played in Corte Bella as well as in other communities.

This year the Corte Bellas finished in third place. Many matches were very close, and in the end, it was determination and teamwork that helped the Corte Bellas win. Their final team record was 36 match wins and 18 losses. Great job, ladies!
