From the Manager’s DeskDear Residents:

With the Annual Meeting election upon us, I wanted to thank the board for their performance and dedication. The

directors are uniquely talented, displaying leadership, intelligence, class and genuine

concern for this great community with respect for the greatness of this community. This is what you deserve and should expect. I have managed

many communities over the years and truly believe that Corte Bella is special based on good

people electing good people to represent them. The directors do not always agree individually, but as a team, they make effective decisions on your behalf. Jim Williams is the most dedicated director I have seen working tirelessly on your behalf. His effort is amazing and skillful. Larry Leighton tends to think of everything and to grabs the reigns when necessary driving the horses down the road. Larry’s past is impressive, accomplished and very interesting. Walt Kearns is a man that if locked in a room for 24 hours, he could solve the worlds’ problems with time to spare. Focused and relentless in doing the right thing, I would

trust him with my life. Bill Blake, affectionately known as “The Mayor” has the ability to lighten up the mood and brighten up the room without trying. Bill is a classy man who cares deeply about everyone. Dan Luparello was new to the board this year and accepted responsibility with a determined charge ahead. I especially appreciate his work with the Anacapa and enjoyed getting to know a great guy. Michael McVeigh, also new to the board this year took on major responsibility and brought great leadership to the table. Michael commands respect by who he is. Talk to him for a minute and you will see. The only woman on the board was Regina Shanney-Saborsky. Regina has been dedicated and driven towards success with all she takes on. Her talent is apparent as a member of the “Water Team” and she is completing a six-year commitment. The board will miss her valuable contributions. It is important to know about those who serve you each day to ensure Corte Bella is what you expect it to be. Please make an effort to thank each of these exceptional human beings for their effort on your behalf. Let them know that you appreciate them, even if you don’t always agree with them. Being a board member can be a thankless, time consuming job and these individuals stepped up so you could enjoy life without concern over the state of the community and your investment. There are Fortune 500 companies whose boards are not as strong as this and you are fortunate to have them. It has been a great pleasure for me to serve with this Board of Directors. Your interest in Corte Bella is in great and capable hands.

Manager of the YearOur Management Company, First Service Residential (FSR) recently announced that Corte Bella’s General Manager, Mike Arrington, was selected as FSR Manger of the Year for

Arizona. This prestigious award was presented to Mike at the FSR Annual

all company meeting in late January. Peers, department heads (including Accounting, Accounts Receivable & Payable, Human Resources),

and the FSR Executive Team voted for whom would receive the award. Please

join the Board of Directors in congratulating Mike on this well deserved honor. Many of you already know the positive changes Mike has effected; he has indeed proven to be an exemplary Manager for Corte Bella. We are fortunate to have Mike as our GM!

2015 Annual MeetingThe Annual Meeting will be history by the time you read this. Election results will be announced via the web, email blast, FSR connect, and in the CB Times. The Annual Meeting included the election (counting, verifying and announcing the results), and reports from the GM, Board and Committees. David Wright gave an interesting presentation on Website content, use and navigation, and using the Resident and Visitor Management System. Residents were given time to address their concerns or to simply provide comments on how it goes in Corte Bella. The Board will conduct an Organization meeting on 1 April to determine Officer and Liaison positions, and other assignments.

Audio-Visual EnhancementsHopefully the Audio-Visual (A/V) system Phase I upgrade will be finished and used for the 2 March Annual Meeting. While writing this piece there were a few problems needing resolution that may delay turnover of the new system. The plan is now a “soft” turnover and first uses at the 20 or 26 Feb Board meetings, followed by full turn-key at the Annual Meeting. Many ceiling and outside speakers were found deficient requiring replacement. The HOA will accept the full system pending contractor demonstration of all venue requirements, completion of a walk-thru punch list, documentation, and staff training.

This Phase I system upgrade provides significant new capability and improvement. The upgrade includes dual high-resolution video projectors, new speakers, wireless microphones, and computer interface, wall panel access to video & audio, and the ancillary equipment and software to make it all work together. The upgrade also provides audio selection so that the Social Building, the patios, breezeway and the Anacapa can be

interconnected individually or in combination. Separate video events with audio and different media sources can be held simultaneously in the Bacara and Bella Stanza rooms, or single use in the Santa Barbara room. The wireless microphone system has greatly improved ease of use, audio fidelity, and ties into the ceiling speakers for good hearing room-wide. The HOA staff is being trained to setup and use the system to support all venues. A Web conferencing capability is also being provided so that residents can remotely “attend” Board and Committee meetings – viewing presentations, hearing the proceedings, and asking “text” questions via the meeting A/V moderator. Anyone with a PC, laptop, tablet or smart-phone can participate.

Long Term Planning Committee (LTPC)The Strategic Community Plan (SCP) effort was completed and has transitioned to the GM and LTPC. The GM and LTPC will use the SCP products (Vision, Mission, Milestones, Priorities and some thirty Goals and Objectives) as the basis for going forward with development and implementation of a long-term plan.

The kick-off of the LTPC has been delayed until March - April to give both the GM and LTPC newly appointed Liaison, Larry Leighton, time to strategize, time for the GM to conduct an information meeting, and time to complete Committee formation. Representatives from the six standing Board Committees have been selected, and one (of three slots available) volunteer member. As the long term plan and LTPC progresses, the community will also be requested (starting at the information meeting) to help with specific tasks/actions or goal categories that they are interested in. If you have any questions on LTPC, then let the GM know.

54• 1/2 Cup Butter or canola Oil

• 3/4 Cup All Purpose Flour• 4 Tbsp Creole Seasoning• 1 Cup Onions, diced• 1/2 Cup Green Bell Pepper, diced• 1/2 Cup Celery, Diced• 1 1/2 Cups Andouille Sausage, sliced• 1 cup Cut Okra• 1 cup Chopped Tomato (optional)• 3 Tbsp Garlic, chopped• 6 Cups cold Chicken Stock• 3 Fresh Bay Leaves• 1# small shrimp – peeled and

• ½ # Bay Scallops• 1/2 # Crab, clams or other seafood

you prefer• 2 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce• Hot Sauce to taste• Kosher Salt to taste, if necessary• 1/4 Cup Thinly Sliced Green Onions• 2 cups plus of Creole Rice • 1 baguette of Fresh French Bread

Mix your onion, celery, and bell pepper together: (The Holy Trinity of southern cooking.)

Heat the oil/butter in a heavy bottom sauce pan or cast iron pot over medium heat. Whisk in the flour slowly and cook,

stirring constantly, until you have a milk chocolate colored mix

called a dark Roux.

Add the Andouille Sausage, 1 Tbsp of

Cajun Seasoning, and the Holy Trinity, cook, stirring often, for about ten minutes or until the vegetables soften.

Add the Okra, and seafood, sauté for 3-4 minutes. Add ¾ of the cold stock, remaining seasoning, and Garlic.

Bring to a Boil. Bring this down to a simmer, and let it go for at least 1 hour at a low Slow Simmer stirring occasionally. If it thickens too much add a little stack as you go.

About 10 -15 minutes before finishing, Add the Worcestershire, Hot Sauce to taste, and 1/2 of the Green Onions. Check again for flavor.

To serve - In 4 large bowls, ladle Gumbo in. Serve with crusty slices of French Bread, Garnish with green onions. Spoon a ¼ - ½ cup of Creole Rice right on top.

Neighborhood Awareness & Safety Committee Report EMERGENCY LOCK BOX PROGRAMThe Sun City West Fire District Emergency Lockbox Program is designed to allow firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians to gain faster access and limit damage to homes

during emergencies, when no one is available or physically able to open the door. This is

a thick steel box with a locking faceplate on the front of it. The box is mounted to the home in a specific location near the front door. The Fire District can immediately use the keys inside the box rather than cause damage to the

structure in order to gain entry. The only keys to lock the boxes are controlled by the Fire District.

The emergency lockbox can be purchased for $50 at the Fire District Administrative Offices (18818 N Spanish Garden, SCW 623-544-5400). Once you have the lockbox, the Fire District staff will make an appointment to have it installed by Fire District personnel.

SMOKE ALARMS PROTECTIONIt is very important to ensure your smoke alarms are working properly. The Sun City West Fire District will come to your house and inspect residents’ smoke alarms, and change batteries as needed free of charge. You can set up an appointment by

TRAFFIC STUDYA Traffic Study project is underway to help determine the areas where excessive speeding and dangerous intersections are located. This will enable us to concentrate on improving the locations that could pose a danger to residents, and help improve everyones safety.

TRANSPONDER SAFETYPlease do not give your gate transponders to anyone. We have instances where vendors and others are using transponders to gain entry into Corte Bella. The transponders are for residents only and all other vehicles need to use the front gate for entry. We request you inform your service/delivery people to use the front gate for access and never the back gate. This helps us record and track who is coming into Corte Bella.

NEXT NASC COMMITTEE MEETINGThe next NASC Committee meeting will be on Thursday, April 2, in the Laguna Room of the restaurant. All homeowners are invited to attend.

Just a gentle reminder, the Design Guidelines specifically prohibit hanging any signs or posters on back fences. The prohibition extends to realtor materials, security posters and other signage. If you want to display a sign in the rear yard, it must meet the size limitations and be placed in the ground. Also, there are limitations on the number of signs, especially for realtors so review your guidelines. If in doubt, check with the HOA.

Also, a clarification regarding motion sensors – the prohibition is against spotlights (of any kind), not motion sensors. Coach lights

can be modified to include the motion feature. As always, any outside light cannot infringe upon your neighbors so golf course lots must also be aware of neighbors across the way. If in doubt of the impact of any lighting feature, visit your neighbors after dark and see whether your proposed fixture would present a problem. Outside lighting is a modification that does require ARC approval.

Please address your questions to the HOA. ARC members are always available to meet or speak with you and you are always invited to attend an ARC meeting to discuss an issue.

As most residents know, the Government Affairs Committee (GAC) has the chartered responsibility to represent CB-HOA in government oriented matters affecting our community. Over the past year-and-a-half the ‘Water Team’ has made significant efforts, working with the ACC, EPCOR, RUCO and local communities to successfully reduce CB residents’ wastewater rates. Although the war continues; the early battles have been successful. They should be com-mended. Thank you Diane Smith, Doug Edwards and Regina Kimbel (Shanney-Saborsky)

APS-SubcommitteeThe APS-Subcommittee was established, within the GAC, to pursue the APS street light problem that continues to ‘deflate’ our treasury. Originally there were 22 service agreements, established by Pulte Home Corp., Inc. with APS, for street lighting that were inherited in December 2007 when the community was transferred to the Corte Bella Country Club, LLC. (CB-HOA). None of the 22 agreements were re-negotiated by the CB-HOA at that time.

A Brief History:Between July 2003 and September 2006 APS installed 285 street lights throughout Corte Bella. As the streetlights were installed, Pulte Home Corp.,Inc., entered into service agreements with APS based on a tariff rate schedule, E-47, which provides dusk-to-dawn (D/D) street lighting service at an unmetered monthly fixed rate cost. A separate part of the monthly cost is for the lamps, anchor base and poles. Under the service agreement, APS retains ownership of the poles and CB-HOA pays a monthly fee, approximately $85-$89/month, depending on the lamp, along with the tariff schedule charges for the D/D lighting, as long as the agreements are in effect and as-long-as the services continue or until “terminated by either party with thirty (30) days writ-ten notice.” Some of the early agreements were in effect for five years while the majority were written for ten years. To date, all expired agreements have been maintained at the current (July 1, 2011) tariff schedule rates.

Eleven (11) of the 22 agreements have expired and are currently month-to-month; three (3) of the remaining 11 agreements will expire by the end of 2015 and the remaining (8) will expire by September of 2016.

In recent years, CB-BOD sought ways to reduce these monthly costs. They considered possibly purchasing the light poles at $1.4M, buy out the agreements, turn-off lights in areas where the agreements had expired, negotiate new agreements with APS; however, while these options were considered none were pursued because at that time there were too many active agreements in place and the resulting costs were too high. Keep in mind the issue is not only the cost of electricity, it is the continued ‘un-reduced’ monthly charges for light poles.

In 2014, the newly chartered Government Affairs Committee decided that the light pole situation must be addressed and some action must be undertaken to reduce these costs to the community. At that time, the APS-Subcommittee began investigating historical documents, the APS service agreements, the community transfer documents and the underlying premise that the charges for the light poles could go on forever. Recently, in 2015, we decided to investigate the possible legality of the agreements and the ‘infinite’ light pole charges. We concluded that under the Arizona Constitution, the real authority regarding public utilities and service corporations to make any changes/corrections lies with the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC). It is their duty and responsi-bility, as provided under Article 15, Sections 3 & 14 of the Arizona Constitu-tion, to, in brief, establish rates and charges and to ascertain the fair value of property from service corporations doing business in the state. Since APS has failed to depreciate the value of the light poles and continues to charge CB-HOA the ‘full market value’, since 2003, we see this as one avenue to address.

With the CB-HOA-BOD’s approval, the APS-Subcommittee plans to meet with APS to discuss our concerns and try to determine an acceptable course of ac-tion that will satisfy the interests of both parties.

It must be noted that IF we are able to negotiate a compromise effecting a cost reduction, unlike our water situation, the benefits will not personally affect each resident; the savings will be community-wide and possibly help to stem future increases in HOA fees. Cost savings is our primary goal.

Over the past few years we have tried to simplify and standardize our terminology in presenting Corte Bella financials. Take a look at the table of the final unaudited results for the Restaurant as of December 31, 2014, which was printed in the February CB Times:

As discussed in the narrative (with rounded numbers), the Restaurant’s actual revenue exceeded its expense by $13,000, but did not achieve the planned budget surplus of $27,000. The net result was an unfavorable variance of ($14,000), of which $9,000 was related to unforeseen equipment repair and maintenance. In addition, performance was impacted by the extended shutdown during the remodeling of Anacapa.

In Corte Bella, any department that has both revenue and expense (Admin, HOA Events, Restaurant, Spa and Fitness) will show either a surplus or deficit. Departments with expenses only (Facilities, Guardhouse and Landscape) show only the amount of the expense.

ConKerr Cancer...a Case for SMILES! Giving sick kids a reason to smile, one pillowcase at a time.

Damien is 4 1/2 years old. He has multiple challenges: Down’s Syndrome, Austism and Stage 4 AML Leukemia. I met him and his mom when I was delivering home-sewn pillowcases as part of the ConKerr Cancer organization to the children on the oncology unit at a children’s hospital.

Damien would not make eye contact and was non-communicative, but I convinced his mom to select two fun, brightly colored cases and she thanked me.

Later that day, I received an e-mail from Damien’s mom, telling me that Damien opened the case, put it on his shoulders and ran through the unit yelling, “Me Superman, Me Superman.” His mom went on to tell me that these were the first words he has said in two years! Imagine that a colorful, kid-friendly, home-sewn cotton pillowcase made him SMILE.

ConKerr Cancer is an inspired organization. My friends, Cindy and Gavin Kerr, started it in 2002. They began making brightly colored pillowcases for their son Ryan who was diagnosed at age 12 with a rare osteosarcoma and was hospitalized for long periods of time. The pillowcases brightened up his hospital room and put a smile on his

face. The pillowcases were so loved by Ryan that Cindy and her friends started making them for other sick children.

Ryan lost his valiant battle at age 17. ConKerr Cancer is his legacy and he is our inspiration to continue the mission. I have met and been inspired by these sick kids and their parents. They motivate me to keep sewing!

In 2007 I became a Coordinator for the organization, starting a Midwest chapter. This chapter is still going strong and in the past 5 years they have delivered over 35,000 pillowcases to three children’s hospitals.

Then in September, I was asked by Cindy to start a Chapter in the Phoenix area. In just 5 months time and with the help of 4 volunteers, we have delivered 460 Cases for SMILES!

Since its inception, collectively the ConKerr Chapters have delivered over 1 million pillowcases and now has over 121 Coordinators in the U.S., Canada, South Africa and England. The success would not have happened without countless volunteers. We won’t stop until pediatric cancer is eradicated.

You can HELP make hospital stays as pleasant as possible for chronically ill children. I am hoping you will join ConKerr Cancer and me in our mission to brighten the lives of sick children at Phoenix Children’s, Cardon Children’s and other local hospitals with pediatric units by sewing these colorful pillowcases.

Making a pillowcase is easy, rewarding, and it can have a positive impact on a child in need.

If you don’t sew, no problem (I didn’t either 8 years ago!), you can help cut material, iron the finished cases, and prepare the cases for delivery.

New Corte Bella Interest Group: Sheepshead: A Card GameCorte Bella resident Jerry Quartana, who is a native of the State of Wisconsin, is forming an Interest Group to play the card game of Sheepshead.

In the United States, Sheepshead is most commonly played in Wisconsin as well as the German counties in Southern Indiana, which has large German-American populations. That may be why you have not heard of it.

The game can be played with 3,4, or 5 players so it is very flexible to gather a group to play. Jerry is willing to teach the game, which is played with only 32 cards. Did Microsoft Finally Get It Right?

If you’ve been reading the technology articles lately like I do, you will have noticed that Microsoft unveiled a lot of new plans recently. Unlike the past few years, these announcements actually were generally applauded by the technology world as a whole – even by their competitors.

The most significant news to us was that Microsoft is making a major effort to bring us back to Windows. Coming soon is Windows 10. Microsoft will offer a free upgrade to this new version for both Windows 7 and 8 users. Yes, I know – whatever happened to Windows 9? Well, you already know the answer to that. Ten sounds better than 9 to marketers.

For any of you who have come to our meetings over the past year, you will have heard me lambaste Windows 8. And it wasn’t just me. It is universally acknowledged to be a flop, and it truly

threatens Microsoft’s market share if they don’t figure out how to right the ship. Whether or not Windows 10 solves their problems is anyone’s guess at this point. Based on first looks, it looks like it’s better, but only marginally so. But it might be good enough to keep people from jumping ship to something else.

Realize that Microsoft took a big gamble with a common problem. Their goal of making one operating system for all platforms was a lofty one. Apple has yet to take this plunge, where it has Mac OS X for desktops, and iOS for mobiles. Eventually Apple will be faced with the same dilemma. It’s not clear yet how they will fare. When everything settles, Windows might be ahead in the game. I say this while unfairly ignoring Linux. Linux has been one version on all platforms for years. As demonstrated in a recent meeting, it’s a free solution that can use your old hardware and satisfy most of us for years to come. Maybe Linux needs to get a marketing department that will call it Linux 10. ☺

The Corte Bella interest group “A World of Friends” (WOF) is celebrating its first year and we invite you to come join us. We are a gathering of friendly residents sharing their richness of history, music, customs, culture, travels and of course food. Throughout the past year, new friendships have been established and old careers revived.

Gayle Backes, a former French teacher says,” I was asked by two WOF attendees to tutor them. I love teaching French and joyfully delved into researching current text books and on-line curriculum.” Interestingly one of her new students lives two doors away and they never knew each other until meeting at WOF.

The Long JourneyA “Bucket List” wish came true for CB resident Karen Stratton last fall when she and two friends packed their bags and flew to Bangkok, Thailand, Chiang Mai and Pucket. They booked the all-inclusive trip through AAA and Go-Away.com.

“The tours were exceptional”, Karen said. “For two weeks we had a private car, driver and tour guide who escorted us into the most exotic places. And, there were more meals included than we had anticipated.”

They expected it to be hot and humid, but the weather was cooler than Phoenix. They were told everything was inexpensive and with an exchange rate of 30 to 1 they enjoyed their shopping adventures. That is until they discovered the custom tailor in Bangkok charged more than two times the price they found in Chiang Mai. And, a bottle of wine was five times more expensive than home.

“Chiang Mai took our heart,” Karen said. “We enjoyed the culture, ancient sights, the food and especially the elephant camp. We were able to spend a long day in the camp where we watched the elephants perform trained skills such as paint a picture on canvas with their trunks, play tunes on a harmonica, kick a soccer ball, dance and bow to the crowd when we clapped.”

“The highlight was a one-hour elephant ride through the grounds. We were seated in a basket-like saddle with a canopy overhead for shade while our elephant guide rode forward on his neck, “ Karen said. “At the end of the adventure, we were able to feed

the elephants sugar cane and bananas. They said good-by to us with a long sloppy kiss and a big elephant hug!”

“We had a frightening experience in Bangkok when we had a ride on a tuc tuc, which is a bicycle “taxi” that seats three persons in the backseat. Our driver didn’t speak English and the crush of traffic was hair-raising.”

A visit to the white sand beaches of Pucket was the last leg of the trip where they enjoyed snorkeling in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Karen works as Massage Therapist in the Corte Bella Spa and she took advantage the exceptional services offered at the very affordable price of $6 - $20 for an hour. “I was in heaven,” she said smiling.

She said the only negative aspect of the whole trip was the twenty-plus hours of flight time it took to get there. Massage, anyone?

Giving BackGiving back to and investing in one’s community is always worth acknowledging. Recently the Anacapa Restaurant was on the receiving end of very welcome donation from Shirley and Jen, Corte Bella residents who presented a commercial quality immersion blender with attachments to Executive Chef Dan Haywood. Chef Dan remarked that this welcome donation replaced an important piece of kitchen equipment that had been damaged. Chef Dan says this new blender will be used extensively in the kitchen and at his popular cooking demonstrations. According to Chef Dan, Shirley and Jen had questioned him about any equipment needs and when he mentioned the blender, the ladies graciously offered to replace this item with their donation. Chef Dan emphasized his gratitude not only for the donation but for the ladies’ “interest in what goes on behind the scenes in our kitchen.” Thank you Shirley and Jen for your support of the Anacapa and for your continuing interest in improving life in Corte Bella.

Children’s Easter Egg HuntThe annual Corte Bella Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Easter Sunday April 5, 2015 at 10 o’clock in the morning. This event is open to all children & grandchildren of Corte Bella residents and also to those of Corte Bella employees. The age groups for the individual hunts are 0 - 3, 3 - 5 and 6 – 9.

To facilitate this event, children must be pre-registered at the Fitness Center beginning Sunday, March 22nd. When registering children, you will be required to supply the child’s name, gender and age.

Each registered child will receive a raffle ticket to be used at the event’s drawing for prizes. Due to the popularity of this event, it is important that all children be pre-registered.

In order to avoid interfering with the Anacapa Easter Brunch, the plan is to use a different location for the hunt this year. All details of the event will be included in a flyer that will be emailed in March to all residents and posted on the Corte Bella website.

Fans gather for the big game

Super Bowl XLIX Hits the West Valley

Not only was the University of Phoenix stadium filled to capacity with football fans. The Santa Barbara room at Corte Bella was also filled to capacity, and the price of a ticket was only $5.00. The HOA Events group welcomed residents to the Second Annual Corte Bella Super Bowl party on Sunday, February 1st. Seattle Seahawk and New England Patriots fans, along with those who just enjoy the game, wore their favorite team colors and enjoyed the day. There was so much response to the event that an overflow crowd of about 20 gathered in the Anacapa to watch the big game.

Event founder and chairman, Bert Hoffman and his wife Roberta, along with all the event volunteers helped to make sure everything went off again without a hitch. Bert had his referee shirt on and whistle in hand, in case he had to call any penalties. Joel Piaskowski was the emcee and made sure the crowd had fun with trivia questions, door prize drawings, and an overall fun filled time. HOA Board member Mike McVeigh attended, and was in charge of the football “squares” pool. Jack Carollo was the luckiest winner, with winnings in three out of the four quarters!

Attendees again were able to vote on the commercials with signs indicating approval or “forgetaboutit”.

The Anacapa staff served a wonderful selection of “game day” food including burgers, brats, nachos, and chicken wings to mention just a few. Food and Beverage Manager, Fred Hernandez was spotted wearing his Dallas Cowboy jersey proving that “once a fan, always a fan”. Almost everyone stayed until the end as this year’s game which came down to the very end with the final score of New England 28 and Seattle 24. Now, as Super Bowl winners say, “I’m going to Disney World” until next year’s Corte Bella Super Bowl party.

To avoid the long lines at the Maricopa DMV office on Bell Road, gather a friend or two and drive to Wickenberg. The DMV office there is much less crowded and an afternoon of shopping and lunch in Wickenburg is a much nicer way to spend your time.

The steady real estate sales for 2014 in the surrounding areas ended up bringing us our

share of new residents to the Corte Bella community, we have been fortunate to showcase our beautiful club house and golf course to them resulting in many new resident/members this past year.

Corte Bella is one of a handful of golf courses that are steadily gaining membership and we are thankful, we realize it’s all about service, providing fun and paying attention to the details.

We recently started serving breakfast originally as a test on Friday thru Sundays. All Corte Bella residents and golf club members are welcome and it has turned out to be a hit, we consistently receive

praise for how delicious the food is, but also how inexpensive it is. We encourage you all to experience a hearty breakfast and meet the golf club staff, let’s keep it going.

We also welcome residents to come and participate in our “new” golf clinics, they are held every Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:30pm, the cost is only $15.00 for Corte Bella residents.

We also offer resident access to the driving range and putting greens, a day pass will run $15.00.

You can also book a private golf lesson with one of our golf professionals.

We have had a busy start to the season with parties, events and tournament activities. At the end of January the club had the honor of hosting the Corte Bella Disabled American Veterans golf tournament. The tournament was open to anyone who wanted to have a fun afternoon and make a donation to a worthy cause.

This year’s event raised $15,440 for the Disabled American Veterans of Arizona. It was a good time had by all, based on how well this event was received, and the level of participation, we are looking forward to hosting this event again next year. We thank all of our veterans for their unselfish service that grant us our safety and freedoms.

On Tuesday, January 13, 2015, there was a large gathering of Corte Bella Tennis Club members at the Corte Bella Social Hall. It was a record attendance for the annual meeting since CBTC’s inception.

The very enjoyable evening began with membership registration and a social hour. There were delicious pastas, salads, and desserts that were served buffet-style.

Following dinner, the meeting began with Joel Piaskowski, our president, presenting a very excellent and fun slide show that recapped the entire year of 2014, to include social events, tennis tournaments, and pictures of the tennis match with participants from Corte Bella and the students from Sandra Day O’Connor High School in December. The slide show was a highlight of the evening, and everyone appreciated Joel’s effort to put it together.

New officers were elected and updated bylaws were approved. The new officers are Donna Norton, Steve Downing, Dave Beams, and Mark Sivakoff. You can find their contact information at the close of this article, as well as the contact information of the incumbents.

There was terrific camaraderie amongst the crowd, and the evening was a great success!

CBTC HAPPY HOUROn January 27, 2015, the skies cleared after a previous day of rain, and the CBTC sponsored a happy hour on the patio at the Anacapa Restaurant. It was a joint effort of the CBTC Board, Chef Dan and Fred Hernandez who made sure the table was filled at all times with wonderful hors d’oeuvres. With the great service by the wait staff at the Anacapa and the beautiful weather, everyone enjoyed an evening of fun and relaxation.

The 2015 CBTC Board is busy planning the member socials and tournaments for the rest of the year. It will be another fun and exciting year for tennis at Corte Bella!

Our pickleball club membership runs from February 1 - January 31 of the following year. We kicked the year off right with a social event out at the courts on February 6. More than 70 members and guests came, enjoying a few games and then relaxing under our lovely lanai area with a pot-luck.

Next social, the final of the season: the morning of Saturday, March 21st.

Pickleball players from Corte Bella, Sun City West, and other surrounding neighborhoods gathered at the Palm Desert courts of Sun City West in January for a charity event. Corte Bella alone had eight teams present. Unfortunately, the weather turned bad and the event had to be rescheduled for February, but the great news is that $9,500 was raised for the Helping Hands organization.

March is prime tournament month and many of our Club members will be participating: - Sun City West Fun in the Sun: March 9-11 - Robson Ranch: March 18-21 - Sun City Spring Slam: March 27-29

With the temperatures rising, open play for Club members is every morning at 8:00 a.m. We have courts set aside for both novice and intermediate players. Come on down!

Want to learn what the game is all about and get some basic instruction? We have clinics scheduled on both March 8th and the 29th at 2:00 p.m. on the courts. In addition, every Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. there will be a representative from the club to assist Members and Non-Member beginners/novice players in learning the game in general and also technique improvement.

We’ll look forward to seeing everyone out on the courts.
