From the Editor’s DeskAsk just about any animal owner about their pet; teeming with pride they’ll most likely present you with more photos and anecdotal evidence of their animal’s quirky personality than you can handle.

It doesn’t take reading between the lines to understand just how much can be learned

from one’s furry Valentine. Boundless energy, fervent love and affection, and undying loyalty are just some of the ways in which pets thank us for making them members of our families.

Moreover, pets can stand in as dedicated exercise partners or great listeners, and serve as excellent icebreakers when meeting new friends.

Like most things, technology has made even pet adoption — an extremely rewarding investment unto itself — easier than ever.

Sites like PetFinder.com and CraigsList.com serve as relative “animal search engines” (my own term), if you are considering adopting a pet. On those sites, you’ll find the heart-melting faces and personal stories of all types of domesticated animals. Be careful who you fall in love with, though, horses and pigs (available online — seriously!) are not allowed in Corte Bella.

Enjoy the issue, please, and to you and your Valentine, good reading!

This month’s issue of the CB Times pays tribute to the wonderful world of pet ownership.

Stretching : the Truth Just this past year, a cat in Boston, Mass. fell 19 stories out of the window of a high rise building. Incredibly, the cat suffered only minor bruising (lungs) — and no broken bones or cuts.

How is that possible?

Studies show that cats have a better chance of surviving from falls of nine stories or more, because they have time to relax and orient themselves. During falls from such great heights, cats have the ability to spread out and slow their descent.

Furthermore, cats are known fans of stretching, and can be seen doing so after every one of their cat naps. This behavior has been proven to help with dexterity, muscular elasticity, and even injury prevention. Take the cue and make sure to stretch after extended periods of inactivity.

Letter from the PresidentDear Fellow Residents:

As I sit at my desk and write this I’m staring at a sea of sheets, blankets and towels that are being used to protect our plants. Unfortunately they probably will not work and Mother Nature will

again prevail with her apparently bi-annual assault on our vegetation. That’s the bad news. The good news

is that typically they just die back to the ground and then come February and March they all start to grow back. And, by then we will be enjoying warm temperatures and Cactus League Baseball and have forgotten this cold weather.

But what we don’t want you to forget is the Corte Bella Board of Directors Election that is

now upon us. This year there are four positions open. There is a crowded field for your consideration and so I sincerely hope that you take the time to read over all the material that has been sent to you and choose and vote for those candidates that will best reflect your views. At this time of year, I would encourage you to contact any of the candidates or Directors if you have questions that may be left unanswered.

Please also note that this year there will be in your packet an additional question on the application of excess income. On this year’s ballot you will find the following question:

“Shall any excess of membership income over membership expenses for the tax year ending December 31, 2013 be applied against subsequent tax year’s member assessments as provided by IRS Revenue Ruling 70-604?”

YES | NO

A YES vote effectively defers the tax liability on any such excess funds for one year and eliminates it entirely if the carried over funds are returned or are expended entirely for member-related expenses.

A NO vote means taxes will be paid on any such excess funds, reducing funds available to the association for operations. Depending on the amount of excess income, the tax assessment could be between 15% and 19%.

The current Board recommends a YES vote as it minimizes our tax liabilities and ultimately reduces future assessments.

All of these results will be announced at the Corte Bella Annual Meeting on Monday, March 4, 2013 at 6:00 PM. “This will be held at the Sun City West Foundation building on the southwest corner of RH Johnson Blvd and Stardust in Sun City West. Hopefully you will be able to attend so that you may be brought up to date on what has taken place in your community over the past year.

Thanks for taking the time to read and get involved. Hope to see you at the March Meeting.

Being a pet lover, I always enjoy seeing all the dogs being walked within the community. They seem to enjoy the outdoors as much as their owners do.

Since this is the “pet issue”, this is a good time to remind all pet owners of the rules pertaining to

pets. One of the most frequent complaints we receive in the HOA office is some of the pet owners do not pick up after their pets. As a courtesy to everyone, please be sure to pick up after your pets;

please see the rules listed on Page 15. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

Also, please join with me in welcoming Mark Everts to the Corte Bella Team (he has been with Corte Bella for just a little over one month). Mark is the new Facilities Manager; his office is in the Fitness Center (my previous office) next to David Jolovitz’s and the Volunteer offices. Congratulations Mark, and welcome to Corte Bella!

One Great DaneIlsa is a “lean” 130-pound Great Dane wrapped tightly in a soft,

majestic-looking brindle coat. Her fur’s swirling black and brown

pattern reads like nature’s understanding of army fatigues.

Standing with a chest that dramatically sweeps up into the small

of her waist, Ilsa may appear to many as a dog that was born to

fight. And sometimes, looks are not deceiving.

The now-healthy three-and-a-half-year-old Dane was engaged

in a fight for her life less than one year ago. Proud Corte Bella

parents, Kim and Glenn Abrew, explain:

“When walking Ilsa one day, we noticed that her right leg was

bigger than the other, where the upper forearm would be, right

below the joint,” Kim said. “So we took her to the veterinarian the

very next day.”

Doctors agree: Early detection can mean the difference between

life and death.

“Because of her age, we initially thought that she had contracted

Valley Fever, but after the tests came back negative, we were back

to square one,” Kim remembers. “Then, after several X-rays were

taken, we told that Ilsa had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma,

an aggressive form of cancer.”

“It was like somebody took the wind out of your sails. It was a

shock at first. Then you regroup and think, ‘what are you going

to do? You’re taken aback because this is your family pet and

you expect this breed to last 6 or 8 years. Some live to even 10

years.”

Following the devastating news, the Abrews met with an

oncologist to review all of the available treatments and pricing.

They were presented with three cancer treatment options:

(i) do nothing; (ii) medication and radiation; (iii) amputation.

The news was heartbreaking. Regardless of the treatment

selected, Ilsa was not expected to reach her fourth birthday.

With an incredulous pat on the back, the Abrews were told to

treat their dog’s every day as her last, and to make her feel as

comfortable as possible.

And so, at a time when her parents fought back their tears, Ilsa

decided to fight back against the cancer that threatened her life.

Following several rounds of radiation at Southwest Veterinary

Oncology in Gilbert, Ariz., and against all odds, Ilsa was found

to be cancer-free.

Because of Ilsa’s resolve to live, and her prized Great Dane

lineage, a breed that was first used in Germany to hunt wild

boars, her cancer didn’t stand a chance.

This beautiful, long-legged Dane

now goes for regular check-ups

every four months to monitor

the disease that has claimed

the lives of so many others. She

remains a happy and healthy

member of the Abrew family

and a fan favorite during her

victory laps around the Corte

Bella loop.

Ask Agnes: “Spot” Spots!

CC&Rs Revisited: Dog Doo-Doos and Don’ts

I’m a pet-lover. I like the smell when you walk in to Petsmart, pure

“animal by-products!” I’m speaking of the food… not the waste.

It’s okay if your home smells of dog/cat food, but not that other

stuff.

Pet odor from urine or feces is a very tough deodorizing problem.

The stain is the least of the problem. You must deodorize the spot

or the animal will return to that spot and use it again.

First, soak up as much of the liquid as you can and remove any

solids. Don’t panic if you don’t have an enzyme cleaner on hand.

Club soda can help. Pour it on and blot. Stand on the towel to

absorb as much of the liquid as possible. You may have to repeat

this.

Mix some white vinegar and water (1/3 c. vinegar to 1qt. water).

If you can put this in a spray bottle and spray on the pet stains

it helps to remove the smell. (Never use ammonia to clean up a

pet accident as the ammonia will attract an animal to the spot.)

If you own a pet, or even if you don’t, always keep an enzyme

cleaner on hand. It works as a laundry spotter for protein stains

from humans too!

Next time you’re in Petsmart just enjoying the smell, ask an

associate to recommend a good enzyme cleaner.

A kind reminder of the CC+Rs as they pertain to pet waste

Source: Exhibit C, Use Restrictions, Page C4 of C8

Rule 4:

(b) Pets shall be confined to the Lot or kept on a leash at all

times;

(c) Owners of pets shall be responsible for the immediate

removal and disposal of all solid waste of such owners’ pets;

Editor’s note: With this in mind, we at Corte Bella would like to

remind you to please clean up after your pet(s) when walking

them around the community. Doing so will leave the Community

as beautiful as ever.

PET PALS

A Westie’s TaleMy name is Millie Lau. I am a silky white, pure-bred West Highland Terrier, which I am very proud to be. I lived for six years in Boise, Idaho with my first Mommy who was very nice to me. She trained me to compete in dog shows for three or four years, and then she let me have a couple of litters of puppies.

I loved being a show dog and prancing around in front of people for prizes. (I think I usually won.) And I loved all my puppies. The only trouble was that my puppies were so cute and so white and so well-behaved, as soon as they were eight or nine weeks old, people would come by my Mommy’s house and fall in love with them and give my Mommy money to take them home. Most of them, I never saw again, and I kinda’ missed them, you know.

One day last year I got sick and went to the vet who said I had an infection. After surgery he told my Mommy I could have no more puppies. That was kind of okay with me. It was like being retired.

So while I was enjoying myself lying around the house and following my Mommy everywhere she went, this very nice lady and her husband stopped by our house and said they would like to give my Mommy some money to take me home with them. They said they wanted a pretty, well-trained, experienced “Westie” like me to take me to their nearby home and later to Corte Bella in Arizona where they live in the winter-time. They said they had looked lots of places and at lots of dogs, and I was perfect. (They sure know how to make a dog feel good about herself.)

When my Mommy saw how much love the nice lady and gentleman had for me, she softened her heart and let me go with them. I think she was kind of sad, but it was a real adventure for me. I found out their names are Ellen and Reid Lau and they live on a ranch near Sun Valley in Idaho half of the year and in Arizona the rest of the time.

Well, in a real short time I came to love the lady very much because she reminds me of my first Mommy a lot, and she rubs my belly and scratches my ears whenever I ask. I was a little scared of her big, ol’ rancher husband, at first, but I soon discovered he’s as gentle as a lamb. Now I wake him every morning to take me outside and, later, for a walk around the block. We’re walking buddies. (Maybe you’ve seen us. We greet lots of people!)

I’ve quickly come to love Corte Bella and I feel like I am just as retired as my new parents. I am one lucky dog. If you need a companion to make you happy, you could adopt a dog, too. As my new parents found out, there are lots of ways to adopt.

Reid and Ellen Lau moved to Corte Bella in 2005 after wintering several seasons in Sun City West and Sun City Grand. Reid was previously owner/operator of sheep ranches in Nevada and Idaho. Ellen is a retired music teacher. Millie is their third Westie.

A supposed origin of the idiom is sometimes falsely credited to strong rains that might have swept dogs and cats off of neighborhood roofs. Thus, animals falling from the Heavens remains a colorful fallacy.

A more accurate attribution is unfortunately a disheartening one.

The most probable source of the expression comes to us from an epidemic first noted in Jonathan Swift’s satirical poem, A Description of a City Shower (1710). Swift wrote of heavy rains carrying along dead animals and other debris through the cobblestone streets of 17th and 18th century England.

The piece is excerpted here:

Idiom Explained: “Raining Cats and Dogs”

Now in contiguous Drops the Flood comes down,

Threat’ning with Deluge this devoted Town.

...

Now from all Parts the swelling Kennels flow,

And bear their Trophies with them as they go:

Filth of all Hues and Odours seem to tell

What Street they sail’d from, by their Sight and Smell.

They, as each Torrent drives, with rapid Force,

From Smithfield or St. Pulchre’s shape their Course,

And in huge Confluent join’d at Snow-Hill Ridge,

Fall from the Conduit, prone to Holbourn-Bridge.

Sweeping from Butchers Stalls, Dung, Guts, and Blood,

Drown’d Puppies, stinking Sprats, all drench’d in Mud,

Dead Cats and Turnip-Tops come tumbling down the Flood.

The Nth Degree

Beatles Mania

That’s a pretty high level, the Nth degree. How does one accomplish as much or go as far as possible, to reach the Nth degree?

It takes a village, or in Corte Bella’s case, a close-knit group of over thirty unpaid volunteers. Their task is to create unique, educational, entertaining and life-enriching experiences for the Corte Bella Country Club social calendar. For nearly four years, these volunteers — your neighbors — have worked tirelessly on your behalf to make our community the envy of all others.

Their talents include:• Legal Attorneys• Human Resource Specialist• Engineer• Financial Specialist• Charitable Services Coordinator• Physician • Journalist• Photographer• Editor• Business executive• Restauranteur• Sous Chef • Wine Connoisseurs and Consultants

• Marketplace Coordinator• Travel Coordinator • Casino Trip Coordinator• Creative Typesetter• Web Site Assistant• Party Planners • Designer and Savvy Shopper• Ticket Takers• Fashion Model Volunteers• Collectively, the group speaks five languages They coordinate educational lectures, special dining events, Holiday celebrations, cooking demos, Marketplace, musical entertainment, ticketing, news stories and announcements. As an added bonus, the CB Interest Group Leaders provide residents with social opportunities in sports, recreational and educational pursuits.

Our volunteers are on the job, working nights, weekends and Holidays, giving freely of their time and talent. They take it to the Nth degree. With your support, CB social events are consistently sold-out and due to popular demand, new dining and entertainment venues are continually being added. These events make a significant financial contribution to the Anacapa and enhance the active life style of our community. Watch for announcements of coming events on the Corte Bella web site, at www.CorteBella.net.

A sold-out crowd of 210 patrons filled the Corte Bella Social Hall on Sunday, January 13, to enjoy a magical mystery tour of our favorite Beatles tunes, performed by the professional musicians of Paperback Writer™. The atmosphere in the room was lively and energetic from the first musical cord.

The four performers, each of them not too far from retirement age themselves, were svelte, sassy and strummed with nonstop action. One peek at their web site proves why this show was so special. They have performed around the world, on stage for renowned music fests, for Disney Entertainment, and have been featured entertainers aboard cruise ships.

Corte Bella Country Club once again offered residents its own cruise ship style of entertainment by staging a Mediterranean Buffet at Anacapa prior to the show. Over 160 patrons dined that night in European style and gave the chef and staff rave reviews for this unique dining venue.

Then it was on to the show! Looking very much like the Fab-Four, in their mop-top wigs, the audience enjoyed a chronological “tour” of the Beatles greatest hits. However, for those of us who lived through that musical period, listening to the emotions expressed in these songs, we re-lived our growing-up years.

The show opened with songs about young love — “I Want to Hold Your Hand” — and went right on through to “Yesterday” and “Will you still feed me when I’m 64?”

There was no holding back from the audience when the band rocked into their rendition of “Twist and Shout!” The ladies were dancing in the aisles. All this right here in the heart of Corte Bella! Thank you once again, to the Corte Bella Event Volunteers for bringing the world to our doorstep.

Cool Cars of Corte Bella“At the young age of 15, I purchased my first car; a 1951 Ford two-door. However, it never got past the primer stage due to my lack of funds. Many years later, after restarting several project cars, it was my dream to restore the same model ’51 Ford that I had when I was 15.

I had been looking at classified ads for some time when I saw exactly what I was looking for. It turned out that a woman had put in the ad without consulting her husband. She wanted to be able to park her everyday driver in the parking spot that was being occupied by the ’51.

We went to see the car, which was a rust bucket full of cans. After the husband and wife talked for some time and finally agreed, I became the owner of another ’51 Ford.

It took me about five years to complete the car which was been totally customized. It has a Ford big block engine with all of the comfort amenities. The paint is House of Kolor’s cobalt blue with cool graphics. We call the car, ‘Bad Boy.’

We drove it to Arizona from Minnesota in October, 2012 and passed everything but a gas station, and only got stopped once for speeding. This car, needless to say, is nothing like the ’51 Ford that I drove when I was 15.”

This poem comes to us from a Corte Bella resident with close ties to the devastating events that occurred at Newtown, Conn.

Newtown AngelsThey said their goodbyes and got kissed at the door,

and off they went to the school bus as they had the day

before

For they wanted to learn so much more,

so that they would be even brighter when they came home

once more

But the angels came and gave them wings,

so they flew to Heaven to learn about all good things

So we had to let them go, before we really got a chance to

know all the wonderful pleasures they would bring, so now

it’s only to their memory that we can cling

For man’s inhumanity struck once again, for which there

seems to be no end, and so I pray once more, please don’t

ever let this happen anymore!

Vanilla Cream• 1 vanilla bean, halved

lengthwise, or 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

• 1 cup chilled heavy cream, Whipped to stiff peaks

• 1/3 cup sour cream • 1/4 cup sugar

Angel Food Cake

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

1. In a food processor spin sugar about 2 minutes until it is superfine. Sift half of the sugar with the salt the cake flour, setting the remaining sugar aside.

2. In a large bowl, use a balloon whisk to thoroughly combine egg whites, water, orange extract, and cream of tartar. After 2 minutes, switch to a mixer.

5. Continue until all of the flour mixture is incorporated.

6. Carefully spoon mixture into an ungreased tube pan. Bake for 20-30 minutes before checking for doneness with a wooden skewer. (When inserted halfway between the inner and outer wall, the skewer should come out dry).

Starting in 2013, we are going to form an Anacapa Restaurant Resident Advisory

Team. We’re looking for residents who want to take an interest

in the goings-on of our restaurant, have ideas and

suggestions on how we can better serve our community,

and want to know more about all the work we do here

at Corte Bella. I’ve had many interested persons talk

to me already, and we are excited to move forward

with the opportunity to work with our residents.

What we ask of interested parties is to submit your e-mail address and contact

information to the Anacapa Restaurant’s Chef Dan Haywood at dhaywood@

cortebellacca.com. We are going to have a specific number of openings on the

team, and of course we can’t accommodate a huge number of people, so only the

most qualified candidates .

When applying, please let me know why you are interested, share with me any

food and beverage knowledge you may have, and please state why the Anacapa is

important to you. I will look over all the messages before I make my Advisory Team

appointments. Those individuals who do not have access to email, you may bring

in a letter containing the same information (and contact info), and give it to the host

or to myself directly.

If members of the Advisory Team are not able to attend quarterly meetings, I will be

happy to move persons in and out so that many persons are able to participate. We

want to create a positive open forum to talk about upcoming events, menus, the

good things we are doing, as well as challenges we may need to address. Many of

the issues that were discussed in the 2012 survey, as well as what I have been told

by restaurant patrons, will be important discussion points for our Advisory Team.

I feel this is a great step in getting more involved with our community and learning

what they want from us. I look forward to hearing from you. If you are contacted to

be a representative, we will send out meeting dates and a basic format for the rules

of conduct and structure of the meetings.

Cheers and happy eating.

Happy 2013 to all of our residents from the Anacapa.

Executive Chef Dan Haywood, Anacapa Restaurant

Have you ever been sore after playing tennis? Here are a few tips for stretching:

Stretching increases flexibility, improves circulation, and increases the range of motion of your joints. Having flexible muscles prevents your body from tightening up during your match, and hustling around the court will feel more comfortable and less tiring. Better circulation means blood can easily flow to your muscles, improved range of motion of your joints, improves your overall balance and ability to move around the court.

Here are some stretching essentials:

• Target the major muscle groups: Focus on your calves, thighs, hips, lower back, neck, shoulders, and forearms. Not only are these muscle groups important for tennis players, but these muscles and joints are routinely used on a day-to-day basis.

• Pace yourself: Don’t grow impatient while stretching or hurry through each exercise. In order to safely lengthen your tissues, hold each stretch for about 30 seconds and then switch to the other side. Do each stretch two or three times.

• Don’t bounce up and down: Bouncing when you stretch can tear your muscles, which can lead to scar tissue as your muscles recover and heal. Additionally, torn muscles make you less flexible and can cause more tightening and pain.

• Relax and breathe comfortably: Stretching should be a soothing and pain-free experience. You should feel some tension while stretching, but if you feel pain or sharp discomfort, try backing off a little bit. Take long, calm breaths and enjoy the process. Like most exercises, do not hold your breath while stretching.

Come to court 5 on Tuesdays for a fun cardio class! Beginners at 10 AM and Intermediate/Advanced at 11 AM.

It’s another way to stay fit and to have fun while you’re hitting a lot of tennis balls. For more information please, call Aide’ (623) 399-7022 or e-mail at [email protected].
