CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGEHaving been digging in the CDS archives,

I noted that this is not the first time the CDS has staged a Ray Cooney farce….and an ever popular farce is Not Now Darling. But first, in looking back and with many thanks from a couple of our audience members, I discovered a copy of Ray Cooney’s One for the Pot programme that CDS produced back in 1974. A few of our Lifetime Members who continue to support CDS: Barry Smith, Mike Austin and Arek Joseph actually were in that show, —thank you for your continued support. That show in 1974 kicked off the fundraising campaign to build a theatre, and I quote “Funds are needed more than ever as we embark upon the biggest project ever undertaken by Cayman Drama Society – that of building a theatre of our own – a theatre for Cayman – a theatre for you….” While it took some time to get the land and build the theatre (some twenty years later), here we are tonight in the “theatre for you”. While we are proud of all the work our pioneers put into getting us where we are today, we now need your help to continue to build on our theatre, to expand and to be able to continue to provide quality live theatre. Please read our Theatre Managers report to find the exciting new things on the horizon.

We are also thrilled that we have expanded our work toward fulfilling our mission—to educate, entertain and enrich. With a successful pilot training programme completed in December, we are pleased to announce that our training classes are a fixture at the CDS. Revenues that are generated from our productions and special events help to fund not only our physical surrourdings, but also our after school outreach programme which we hope to start to roll out to public schools in the near future. So the time is now, please look for ways in which you can volunteer and how you can make a difference! It is with the dedication of teams like this one who present Not Now Darling to you tonight, that are making the difference. I would like to take my coat…oops, I meant to say my hat off to this

incredibly talented team. They will have you in the aisles in stitches! To our Director, Juliet Fenn…thank you for all your hard work and for bringing this rollicking comedy to Cayman. To our producers, Beverly and Andrew Edgington, thank you - for you tirelessly manage the finances, the bar and have taken the daunting role of the Producers with much aplomb. Of course, any production like this takes an incredible team and team work to pull it off. To the very talented cast, you are all amazing—and to the talented crew who are back stage, side stage and in the sound booth, thank you all for the hours and the dedication you have brought to the Playhouse. In theatre, there are no small parts, and without the crew, the cast would be lost, without the cast there would be no show! Thank you all very much.

Also, a big thank you to the incredible team who worked tirelessly on building this great box set. This also takes a good deal of planning and team work, then all hands on deck hammering, stapling, ironing, painting and everything in between.

Finally, I would like to say another big thank you to our front of house volunteers and bar volunteers and their fearless leader, Beverly. Her imagination on matching the happy hour specials with the shows theme is incredible! A big thank you to you all, for without you, we also would have no show.

Last but not least, thank you for coming tonight. We hope you enjoy our show and would encourage you to become involved. Come along for the AGM on March 6th! A great time to become a member! We have a membership level to suit everyone, from Students to Lifetime Members. Join a social member, or get more involved. There are many opportunities to volunteer at the Prospect Playhouse with the Cayman Drama Society. We look forward to sharing our shows!

THEATRE MANAGER'S MESSAGEIf Not Now, When?

Congratulations to Peter Pasold on constructing the set for Not Now Darling. Bill Mervyn and Liam Oko put in hours alongside Peter but he was the man!

Most elements of a box set such as you see tonight are stock items stored in the theatre. They are used over and over again. There are the flats which form walls, the special flats which house doors and windows, and the trusses on which raised-floor staging is constructed. All of this requires storage space, as do the costumes and props that we keep. We dispose of anything which is easy and inexpensive to obtain. All that glisters is definitely not gold. But we still have space issues and they are not easy to solve overnight. But they can be solved.

There are three elements which will

guarantee that we have space enough to support our productions. First, we can call on our generous members to lend items needed for set decoration; second, we can continue to encourage sponsors to loan furniture and other big ticket props which bring a set to reality, and third we can take better advantage of facilities around the Playhouse. To this end, the old Props Room upstairs is now converted as an additional store for costumes, and all props are now housed in the outside storage building as part of an agreement with the

Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman who have donated use of the entire building in exchange for a smaller storage shed more suitable for its needs.

We are currently designing an extension to

the south of the building to house a black-box training theatre, a revised bar area, and a new office with combined box office. We hope to apply for planning approval by the summer. While we would love to get this done this year, these things take time and money. The Cayman Drama Society is fairly rare among amateur theatre groups - unusual in that it is Not For Profit but operates efficiently enough to make a surplus and can therefore give back to the community. This is because of our volunteers - like Peter, Bill and Liam. And many others who volunteer to produce, direct, act, run box office, serve bar and do countless other things that a professional theatre requires - their sole reward being that the show goes on. Why not sign up for one of our committees and SHARE THE SHOW. And if not now, when?

PRODUCERS’ MESSAGEWhen Juliet Fenn, our erstwhile Director,

approached us to produce her next show we were all still on a Technicolor High. Straight off the back of the success of Joseph we realised that we were a great team who worked well together and that the prospect of a farce appealed to all. Juliet had appeared in Not Now Darling and it remained her most favourite play to star in to date. She forwarded the synopsis to us and the ball started rolling! A farce is a literary genre and the type of comedy that makes use of highly exaggerated and funny situations aimed at entertaining the audience. Farce is also a subcategory of dramatic comedy that is different from other forms of comedy, as it only aims at making the audience laugh. It uses elements like physical humour, deliberate absurdity, bawdy jokes and drunkenness just to make people laugh and we often see one-dimensional characters in ludicrous situations in farces. If the rehearsals are anything to go by then you will witness all of these and more tonight!

A farce is the most difficult genre to direct and Juliet has done an amazing job in bringing together the cast to ensure that they deliver each and every time. It is wonderful to see some new faces stepping on the Playhouse boards, together with “old” favourites. All coming together to try their best to have you rolling in the aisles.

However, as always, it is not only those we see on the stage that must be thanked, but those who work so hard behind the scenes. As Producers we must thank Paul de Freitas, Peter Pasold, Bill Mervyn and Liam Oko for the set design and build. Re-creating a 1970’s London Fur Salon is not that easy, and even harder when you are on a small island in the Caribbean. Thanks to the cast who gave up their weekends to re-create the magnificent colours of the ’70’s and to Juliet and her sewing machine!! Our Stage Manager and her Crew, the Bar and Front of House volunteers. All of these people work tirelessly to ensure that your whole evening is such a success that we see you returning to The Prospect Playhouse time and time again.

The strap line for this show is “the funniest affair that seven people ever had”. Working together with this Team I’d like to be able to re-write that as “the funniest 3 months that 18 people ever had”.

Andrew and Beverly EdgingtonProducers

We are now in our second term of CDS Training with classes running for 5-7 year olds, 8-11 year olds, 12-16 year olds and adults of all levels and abilities. It has been great and we have seen improvements already in our actors. We run regular classes and one-off workshops (method acting, audition technique, the actor’s voice and creating comedy sketches all coming up at the moment!). These all aim to build confidence alongside transferable skills in a safe environment that encourages fun with learning at every step.

If you have ever fancied giving acting a try, now is the time! We have summer camps for children too so don’t delay, get in touch now: Email [email protected] for more information or to book.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGEI first appeared in “Not Now Darling” as

a member of the Phoenix Players in Guernsey in the late 1980’s. I remember it as being one of the cleverest scripts and one of the funniest plays I have ever had the privilege to be part of. Although I was a young ‘20 something’ slip of a girl, I learnt so much about the precision, and discipline that this type of humour requires.

The play is a classic of the genre with scantily clad females running in and out of doors, double entendres and an abundance of verbal and visual gags. Farce is one of the most difficult challenges for a director and for the actors because it demands so much stamina, together with an instinctive sense of timing and a great deal of very hard work to get it right.

The farthest thing from your mind (for most) when you visit the theatre is the work that has been going on for months to bring to you the best performance and set that we can, and it is therefore easy to forget, that just a few short months ago the stage was in its barest form. So please, when the curtains open tonight, I would like you to take in the magnificent set and imagine just how many hours of blood (yes, there was blood), sweat and tears went into the transformation that is now the fur salon of Bodley, Bodley and Crouch. The set design and building team, Paul de Freitas, Peter Pasold and Bill Mervyn have been incredible in their interpretation of the set that was caught inside my head, an amazing feat that anyone could even interpret the thoughts running through my head, let alone bring them to life – but that they did.

The cast not only gave up their free time to rehearse but also to paint and decorate the set, and to create our pièce de résistance, the stage floor, which has been lovingly transformed into “floorboards” – it was truly back breaking for those that spent countless hours painting it, just because it was what I wanted!

I have been so fortunate that Beverly and Andrew Edgington agreed to be my Producers, my unsung heroes, that give far more than the traditional Producer role requires, having spent many a sleepless night wondering how we were going to bring this all together; we were truly blessed in finding such a wonderful cast (some old favourites, mixed with a modicum of new and delightful fresh faces) all who have been totally committed to the production; an excellent set design and building team; a fantastic stage management team led by Anika Hewitt, who has ensured that everything vital - doors, windows, telephones - work efficiently! My lighting and sound crew, Erica Ebanks and Oliver Bishop, and my costume designer Charity Epp - my friends, I salute you!

We have all spent so many hours together, sometimes crying with laughter, sometimes with frustration, as together we built the show that you will shortly enjoy, and so, without further ado, let’s get this show started, I sincerely hope you will have as many laughs watching it, as we have had rehearsing it.

MESSAGE FROM CURTAIN CAll BARThink about it: the ’70s have everything we need right now: hipster beard growers; flower power; peace; and the, strut-worthy confidence of Mr Barry Gibb.

So here at the Curtain Call Bar we will try to revive the cocktail culture. And that’s a term we use loosely. Back in the ’70s, drinking was an accompaniment to night life, not the lead act. We’re not necessarily recommending you rush home to make all of those cocktails with a prevalence of “crème” — and cream — which may make a bunch of these drinks seem like just … too much. Then again, maybe you need a little more ’70s glam in your life. And if you’re not quite ready to wear it, drink it.

We will take some of you back to your youth or hay day with a Harvey Wallbanger - our drink special for the show!!! And at only $5 a cocktail you could almost imagine it is still 1974.
