Residents of Monteith appreciate the barrier preventing pedestrian movement between Monteith St.and Cawthra Square Park but would not mind if it was modified. A variety of opinions was expressedregarding how it may be modified, however in general, a barrier to movement is preferred.

The existing access route between the east end of Monteith St. and the park should be maintained. The "returns" at either end of the historical wall create locations for illegal activities and this should be

addressed in a new design. Current conditions are not necessarily going to stay the same in terms of maintenance and community

engagement. The 519 Centre has started programming the park and urges people to consider thebest way to construct the park rather than the designing as a reaction to past and existing conditions.

Goals and Principles for Design

The following goals and principles were discussed and agreed upon at the meeting:

Reduce opportunities for illegal activities within the park; Design the park to be a welcoming, beautiful, comfortable and inclusive place; Reduce corridors, fences, barriers, isolated pockets and inaccessible areas; Knit the park into a unified, cohesive place place (including AIDS memorial, recent park improvements

& 519 Church renovations); Create a flexible & programmable space that can be permitted by the 519 and other local

organizations; Create a resilient space that can withstand heavy use while remaining beautiful, functional, green &

welcoming; Create a safe & beautiful after-dark park (design with night & nightlife in mind; include lighting as a

feature); Design with all seasons in mind. Designs should reflect and address the LGBTQ history and culture of the neighbourhood.

Design IdeasA series of precedent images and a conceptual plan by Patrick Fahn (see attached presentation) were shownanddiscussed. Following are comments received:

Cawthra Square Park is not just a Pride Week venue, it is there for 51 other weeks of the year andshould not just be designed for Pride.

Using shrubs and trees to create a border at Monteith may not work, since they may take a long timeto mature.

Adding more shrubs to the park may increase maintenance and add to the "corridor" feeling alreadypresent in the park.

The park has become brighter and brighter over the last 15 years, is there any way to keep attractiveand safe lighting in the park while reducing the effect on the neighbours?

Next StepsFurther consultations on general project directions will take place with Residents' Association, the 519 Church

St. CC and other stakeholders in February & March. Comments will be accepted on the graphic material thatis attached in these notes until March 2, 2012. Send your comments directly to the councillor's office or toNetami Stuart ([email protected]).

A concept plan and directions report based on the feedback received will be produced by early April and willprovide background information for detailed design of the park.Further consultation on design will take place during detail design phase.
